The Pretext, by Rae Armantrout
Green Integer, 2001. 91 pp., paperback, US $9.95, ISBN: 1-892295-39-3
This piece is 1,200 words or about four printed pages long
Look at the words. A pretext is something put forward as a reason or excuse. It may be present in order to cover the real you? Who is talking to this you? A pretext is a reason: because or since. Here are three moments from three consecutive paragraphs.
You can see it, since you asked.

Throughout the book, placement and displacement, a sense of barely being here, or barely being. Flickers of light only; mankind can only bear so much reality, she can only apprehend a very little of it. There are no bearings. What are our moments made of? Junkmail, each day:

The Pretext

Rae Armantrout
publisher: Green Integer, 2001

Armantrout is one of the quieter, more reliable writers associated with "language" writing, and is usually considered the "lyrical" one in a group often associated with longer, process-oriented works ("new sentence" writing or the works of Hejinian) or, when writing "lyrics," with a subversion of the genre (Bernstein, Perelman, Howe).
Her 1998 autobiographical work, True , demonstrated that she could write a compelling, if not virtuostic, prose, and that her greatest strength as a writer is not stylistic pyrotechnics, grandiose theoretical syntheses, or encyclopedic references but like William Carlos Williams, to whom she owes a debt in the curious torquing of her sentences an original and quirky turn of mind.
As her brief introduction to The Pretext suggests, Armantrout likes to work by juxtaposition "[The poem's] interesting to the extent that the divisions and fitting together arise spontaneously, without pretext" and the best poems in this collection are resonant coincidings of short bursts of insight, chance meetings that disclose the meanings inherent in all situations as they exist beyond the deceptive assurances of everyday reason: I miss circumstance
already the way a single word could mean necessary, relative

ISBN 0-930901-24-x, paper $5 "The poetry gleams with the kind of clarity that comes only from honing down to the necessary syllables ... the beauty is A's quiet understated control. So that, finally, the work unsettles, stays with the reader and unnerves."
Keith Shein, The SF Examiner
"A.'s phrasing and sculptured concision give her poems an exceptional formal coherence. Her ear shapes solid landscapes.... More typically she prefers an elusive humor, layered with parody and occasionally populated by cartoon characters in various stages of panic. The offhandedness of her manner is belied by the complex emotional charge she gets from apparently banal materials."
Geoffrey O'Brien, Voice Literary Supplement
"Armantrout's poems ride the fence of the Language School movement.

New and Selected Poems
Armantrout, Rae.
First book of selected poems by this core member of the Language writing group.
Rae Armantrout, a core member of the Language writing movement, has long been known for the wit, emotion and punch of her social critique. Veil contains poems from five of Armantrout's previous books as well as a generous selection of new poems. Her work relies tenaciously on the intelligibility of language, her careful syntax bordering on plain speech and meticulously scored lines always questioning how linguistic subjects are formed. Armantrout is interested in questions of origin, and the psychology of perception; she is interested in who is speaking and how we know what we know. Fans will welcome the chance to become reacquainted with her witty and lyric meditations on erotic and family issues, and new readers will be captivated by her poems' immediate availability and freshness.
Rae Armantrout is Adjunct Professor of Literature at the University of California at San Diego and the author of six books of poetry, most recently Made To Seem (1995). Ron Silliman is a poet, critic and editor. He is the author of many books, including MultiPlex (1999) and the editor of In the American Tree (1986).

Armantrout, Rae. True Despite my enthusiasm for the Atelos Press project, I was kind of underwhelmed by this book. It is a straightforward autobiography of a poet anthologized with the first Language poets. It is a short, innocuous, unchallenging book with a few irritating typesetting errors. My favorite part was "the plan." In opening, Armantrout seems to justify her autobiography by suggesting that her life was especially typical. I guess knowing which poems in the Language Poetries anthology were written on acid may be of interest to a few enthusiasts. Other than that, it's short, dull book. Good design, though. email comments to
