My group is engaged in working toward the development of catalytically active species with emphasis on those that operate at the oxidizing and reducing extremes of the redox scale. We are particularly interested in multielectron transformations and therefore we often use multinuclear metal complexes. An example of a process of interest to us that requires a highly oxidizing species is the conversion of water to dioxygen, as carried out by photosynthetic organisms at a tetramanganese active site. At the other extreme of the redox scale, we seek highly reducing species capable of fixation of small molecules such as N , H , CO, CO , and CH . Nitrogenase is an enzyme that employs a metal cluster to catalyze the conversion of atmospheric dinitrogen to ammonia. Our approach to elucidation of the enzyme active site structures involves the synthesis of novel transition metal compounds whose properties may be compared to those of the native system and other catalysts. An ideal biomimetic complex will not only reproduce the structural and spectroscopic properties of the enzyme but will also be able to function as the enzyme does. Once more is understood about the enzyme active site structure and function via the biomimetic modeling approach, we hope to optimize the performance of our artificial catalysts and to extend, or in some cases restrict, their substrate specificity.

Armstrong, William George English engineer who developed a revolutionary method of making gun barrels 1855, by building a breech-loading artillery piece with a steel and wrought-iron barrel
(previous guns were muzzle-loaded and had cast-bronze barrels).
By 1880 the 150-mm/16-in Armstrong gun was the standard for all British ordnance.
Armstrong was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and studied law in London.
In 1839 he constructed an overshot water wheel and soon afterwards he designed a hydraulic crane.
This depended simply on the pressure of water acting directly on a piston in a cylinder.
The resulting movement of the piston produced a corresponding movement through suitable gears.
The first example was erected on the quay in Newcastle 1846, the pressure being obtained from the water mains of the town.
Abandoning his law practice 1847, he founded an engineering works at Elswick to specialize in building hydraulic cranes.
In 1850 Armstrong invented the hydraulic pressure accumulator.

Canadian writer Margaret Atwood was born on November 18, 1939. She earned a BA from Victoria College, University of Toronto, and an MA from Harvard. She has written novels, stories, critial prose, and poetry, all excellent among their kinds. This page is dedicated to her poetry, mainly.Quotes- "Men are not to be told anything they might find too painful; the secret depths of human nature, the sordid physicalities, might overwhelm or damage them. For instance, men often faint at the sight of their own blood, to which they are not accustomed. For this reason you should never stand behind one in the line at the Red Cross donor clinic."
