Artist and Engineer
by Thorold J. Tronrud, Ph.D.
W illiam Armstrong first made a name for himself as a civil engineer - as his work on some of Canada's early railways attests - and as a pioneer in the use of photography for industrial purposes. But is was his art that has given him a place in history. Youle Hind's expedition to explore the areas of the Assiniboine and Saskatchewan rivers a year earlier, changed Armstrong's life. For here, on the craggy shores of the world's biggest lake, he found material for a lifetime's work. We can only speculate on what motivated Armstrong to paint this remote corner of the country. Like so many others of the Victorian era, he may have succumbed to the lure of adventure and felt a need to show the world what he had discovered - dramatic cliffs, forests and waterfalls, unique people and activities. Perhaps he was swept away by the patriotism and promotional zeal that pervaded Upper Canada in these years, or he may simply have felt a need to document the frontier before it changed beyond recognition, for he seldom romanticized the land he painted. But Armstrong also had eminently practical reasons for his interest in the region, both as an engineer and as an artist. In a letter dated 7 April 1860, he applied to the Canadian Department of Public Works for a job placing landmarks and buoys to mark the route between Collingwood and Fort William. At least twice more, he sought employment from the same department enclosing testimonials from his former employers in 1863, and offering to make drawings of the northwest route for a Pacific railway in 1871.

Sounder
Reviewed by Cameron B.
The book Sounder by William H. Armstrong is about a young boy who is only referred to as “the boy” throughout the story. His father is a sharecropper and the family is extremely poor. The boy’s father hunts every day with a dog named Sounder. The father and Sounder have never killed anything until one day they come home with a pig. When they are cooking the pig, the sheriff and his deputies come to their home and accuse the boy’s father of stealing the pig. They take the boy’s father to jail. As the deputies are leaving, Sounder runs after one of them and gets shot and then vanishes. Even though the boy had not seen Sounder in a very long time, he had a feeling Sounder was still alive. The boy looks for Sounder all the time. He never gives up hope that Sounder is alive. He visits his father in jail and tries to tell him about Sounder. His father tells him not to come back to the jail. As the boy learns to deal with the loss of his father and all the responsibilities of helping to care for his family, he also discovers a teacher that takes the time to teach him to read. This is a great book and expresses the determination and persistence of a young boy very well.

You gotta walk that lonesome valley.

-Jesus Walked this Lonesome Valley
, (American Spiritual)
In the Author's Note to the copy of this book that I just read, William Armstrong, who was white, says that he first heard this story from an old black teacher who used to worship at his local church : It is the black man's story, not mine. It was not from Aesop, the Old Testament, or Homer. It was
history his history. I don't know whether it is, in fact, a true story, but as Armstrong's own assertion acknowledges, it is the stuff of myth. Sounder is the loyal coon hunting dog of a family of black sharecroppers. At the heart of the tale is the oldest son in this family, plagued by loneliness, helpless rage, and a burning desire to learn to read. The owner of the land they live on has been careful to space families out, presumably so that they won't band together, so they basically have no neighbors and it is too far for the boy to walk to school. The boy's parents are strong willed, and his mother is deeply religious, but they are very reserved. The boy is very much alone, more so because he can't read, and Sounder is very nearly his best friend. Even this rather isolated world is shattered though when the father is sent to prison for stealing a ham and the men who come to take him away shoot Sounder in the process.

Research Interests
My research is focused on understanding how neurosecretory neurons of the rat hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system release the hormones oxytocin and vasopressin into the general circulation. Current experiments include: 1) conventional intracellular and whole cell recordings of immunocytochemically identified oxytocin and vasopressin neurons, to determine differences between oxytocin and vasopressin neurons and how these differences relate to firing patterns during hormone release; 2) combined light and electron microscopic morphological studies to characterize the synaptic inputs to these neurons and understand the neural circuits which control the firing pattern of these neurons; and 3) characterizing plasticity in the intrinsic and synaptic properties of these neurons as a function of endocrine state.
