Arnold, Matthew - Dover Beach (1867)
    The sea is calm tonight.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; - on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanch'd land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling, At their return, up the high strand, Begin, and cease, and then again begin, With tremulous cadence slow, and bring The eternal note of sadness in. Sophocles long ago Heard it on the Aegean, and it brought Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow Of human misery; we Find also in the sound a thought, Hearing it by this distant northern sea. The Sea of Faith Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore

    Matthew Arnold Quotations
ARNOLD, Matthew (1822-88) Empedocles on Etna
[Last Song of Callicles] Through the black, rushing smoke-bursts,
    Thick breaks the red flame;
    All Etna heaves fiercely
Her forest-clothed frame. Not here, O Apollo!
    Are haunts meet for thee.
    But, where Helicon breaks down
In cliff to the sea, Where the moon-silvered inlets
    Send far their light voice
Up the still vale of Thisbe, O speed, and rejoice! On the sward at the cliff-top Lie strewn the white flocks; On the cliff-side the pigeons Roost deep in the rocks. In the moonlight the shepherds, Soft lulled by the rills, Lie wrapped in their blankets, Asleep on the hills. What forms are these coming So white through the gloom? What garments outglistening The gold-flowered broom? What sweet-breathing presence Outperfumes the thyme? What voices enrapture The night's balmy prime? 'Tis Apollo comes leading His choir, the Nine. The leader is fairest, But all are divine. They are lost in the hollows! They stream up again!
