The Moon's Shadow

At the age of seventeen the young nobleman named Jaibriol Qox becomes ruler of a vast galactic empire - and loses everything he has ever valued. Born of a clandestine liaison between a renegade daughter of the Skolian Imperialate and a scion of the genetically engineered Eubian Traders, Jai Qox grew up in exile, unaware of the powers that coursed through his noble blood.
In the waning days of the bloody Radiance War that ravaged the galaxy, Jai was captured and returned to the Traders to play a role as a puppet Emperor in their scheme to consolidate their domination of space.
Now Jai must walk a razor's edge, to seize the power that is his by birthright without succumbing to its dark seduction and wield it for the good of all, and to avert a conflagration that threatens to engulf a thousand worlds.
Fans of Catherine Asaro's Skolian Universe series should rush to read this novel. For readers unfamiliar with earlier novels in this series, The Moon's Shadow , which can stand alone, is an excellent place to start.

Catherine Asaro. Primary Inversion . Tor. 1995
Review:
Sauscony Valdoria Soz is a bio-enhanced Jagernaut pilot fighting in the war between her Skolian Empire and the Aristo Traders. But she is much more than that, and she finds herself fighting for her Empire, her love, her honour, and her sanity. The story is obviously set up for a sequel ( The Radiant Seas ), but still manages a satisfying closure. Primary Inversion is a great fusion of hard SF ideas with an in-depth character story. There is a lot of juicy new technology, all with a realistic flavour of being based on solid extrapolation of physics. We get a new kind of FTL 'inversion' drive, hand weapons that use matter-antimatter annihilation, nanotechnology sidewalks, a quantum mechanical explanation of telepathy, biomechanical augmentation for pilots, and hacking into galactic computer networks. We also get galaxy-spanning human empires that are thousands of years old, despite the story being set just a few hundred years in the future, due to a fun little plot device. And this all provides a richly textured background for Sauscony's story, as she comes to terms with her various war traumas, and with her destiny. A beautifully told human story, with great background technology. I was hooked.

This book has almost every thing but a hard finish. Kamoj, the heroin, is soft but strong, Vyle, the hero, is strong and good looking. The plot line itself is one of the better ones I have founded this year... Having said all that, I must also state that if you haven't been reading this saga Ms Asaro wrote this book as a stand alone story to begin with, then either her editors or Ms Asaro, herself, decided to "make" you read the other books by giving you such a watered down ending that it leaves you wondering if someone else wrote the ending. I enjoyed it right up to the visit home. The word pictures were interesting, colorful and short. The Sci was valid and possible. I even enjoyed the "worlds" Ms Asaro created with a few clear words. The visit home was unfocused and rambling, even thought it was busy it lacked the linear thought that makes the difference between "Sci-Fi" and just reading. Would I ever read any other book by Catherine Asaro? YES! I would not hesitate to try her again or tell others about her.

When I received a review copy of Catch the Lightning , physicist Catherine Asaro's second take on the Skolian Empire, I was already predisposed to enjoy it. I knew I'd have to be very careful not to allow my feeling for the earlier book to have undue influence over my reaction to this one (I went on record raving about her first novel, Primary Inversion Therefore I'm glad to say that I'm honestly able to praise Catch the Lightning , with only a few faint damns here and there. I've already read it twice, in fact. I will admit that Asaro's particular brand of exuberant neo-Campbellian super-science fiction didn't seem quite as fresh as it did when I found Primary Inversion . But the novel suffers only slightly from the symptoms of sophomore slump, and that mainly in comparison with its action-packed predecessor. Her prose still carries a healthy dose of the headlong sense of wonder for which I started reading sf lo these many years ago, and she doesn't let her background as a physicist get in the way of a good story. If you read and enjoyed Campbell's own series of Arcot, Wade and Morey stories, for instance, then you surely ought to give Asaro's books a try. Asaro's milieu is not a mere nostalgic reconstruction of pulp from the 1930s, however; she is able to bring in elements of more modern sf (sex, for one!) without breaking the charm she begins weaving from the first scene of

However, during his incarceration many changes occurred in his family's Empire. The Radiance War has left Kelric's kin either dead or imprisoned by the Allied forces of Earth, who now rule the Skoalian Empire. The powerful telepathic communication link between Skoalian, Eubian, and Aristo has collapsed. Into that void, Kelric, now the heir to the Skoalian Empire flees by accepting a job on a merchant vessel, but he is captured by the Aristo, who also hold his brother prisoner. The Aristo plan to use the siblings to open the Lock to the time-space continuum portal that will make them the most powerful beings in the universe. Kelric is the only hope to stop this dastardly plan of universal domination. ASCENDANT SUN, the fifth novel in Catherine Asaro's fabulous Skoalian Empire saga, is an exciting and enthralling work of science fiction. The primary story line is crisp and never slows down for a nanosecond. Kelric is a wonderful hero whose previous struggles (see THE LAST HAWK) seem soft compared to his current troubles. Though newcomers will be lost with the complexities of the tale, they, like series fans, will become gripped by the lightning speed of the action and the radiant vastness of the plot, sending new readers searching for the previous novels. Ms. Asaro continues to rise in ascendancy to the apogee of the science fiction universe with this triumphant novel.

"Another Exciting, Sensual Tale"
In 2021, humanity is on the brink of combining artificial intelligence with a perfect robotic body that will lead to Homo superior.  Some conservative scientists fear the future for mankind, but the Department of Defense believes their superman is the ultimate operative. Robotics expert Megan O'Flannery sees both sides of the issue, but concludes that a hybrid is the best next step.  Working for cutting edge company, MindSim, Megan secures the assistance of Raj Sundaram in teaching the prototype robot Aris how to be human.  However, Aris' circuits scramble and he takes his mentors hostage.  While in captivity, Raj and Megan fall in love with one another, but what will happen to their future once his secret is revealed to her? One of the pioneers of science fiction romance, Catherine Asaro creates another exciting, sensual tale that will elate sub-genre fans.  Cleverly, the author provides no solutions to complex ethical questions that leave readers with lingering thoughts about right and wrong.  The romance is hot, but this novel is clearly science fiction first with a dynamic climax that will stun the unsuspecting audience who will fail to break THE PHOENIX CODE before Ms. Asaro reveals the ending of this keeper.
