http://www.landandfreedom.org/us9.htm
The post-Civil War period witnessed an era in which vast fortunes were made in oil, meat-packing and steel. Millions of dollars were accumulated by such industrial giants as Andrew Carnegie, J. Swift Armour and John D. Rockefeller. Whether they were robber barons or lords of creation is a debatable point but no one disputes that their wealth gave them enormous power. In the pre-Civil War period, however, when millionaires were rare in this country, one name stands out. John Jacob Astor had no equal in the ability to amass wealth. How someone of such modest origins, without inheritance, was able to accomplish such a feat, stands out as one of the most remarkable stories in this country's economic history. There were three main circumstances that contributed to Astor's remarkable success. He was an industrious individual with tremendous drive, he was skilled in fur trading and he was able to avail himself of a vast wilderness with scant government supervision. Using devious and illegal means in his dealings with the Indians, Astor was able to monopolize the fur trade in the western United States during the early days of our nation. Then, shrewdly recognizing the potential of trade with China, he began to trade his furs with them, returning with extremely valuable cargoes. Astor's genius was in continually being the first: finding emerging markets where competition had not yet developed. By the time he sold the American Fur Company in 1834, he had already accumulated several million dollars. For many, it could well have been the ending of a successful career, but for John Astor, it was only the beginning. Astor's first stage of fortune-building involved producing goods and trading them. In his second stage he sought to profit from the productivity of others. His activities centered mainly around New York City, and the venture was real estate. Toward the close of his life, Astor commented, "Could I begin life again, knowing what I now know and had money to invest, I would buy every foot of land on the island of Manhattan."

Abelard to Azeglio Abelard, Peter (1079-1142) "I don't know." Peter Abelard was the most noted philosopher of the first half of the 12th century. He spent many years as a teacher of philosophy and is credited with establishing the University of Paris. Abelard's consistently questioning methods of teaching irritated the Church, and his writings were banned for much of his life. He is best remembered today for his ill-fated love affair with Heloise. John Jacob Astor An Unwritten Chapter
by Calvin I. Hoy
Chapter I
From Village to Ship
There is nothing more interesting than studying the success of a great man. It is the material for great authors and biographers to describe his nationality, his ancestors, as well as his environment and upbringing. This all needs to be displayed to explain his success. The world wants to know the secrets which helped him to get above the people of his time.
This is how it was when George left his parents' home to go to London. Henry soon followed him, but instead of going to London, he took the journey to New York. It may be assumed that he got to this route by being a soldier in the Hessian army. John Melchion accepted work somewhere else in his home country and left his parents and his youngest brother. The youngest of the siblings, who was stuck in the unfortunate living, had to remain in the poor life. It was not long until the departure of the brothers, when the mother died, the only real love the little German had experienced. This must have been a big blow for the little fellow, because whenever he could experience a happy hour during his life, he could thank his dear mother for it. It definitely had to be different with his father. Nobody knows how much he missed his wife. But it is known that he remarried after her death. But it was an unfortunate choice. The arguing which was a daily thing with his first wife was very mild compared to the bitter insults and arguing with his second wife. Despite of all the fighting the family increased. But the income did not. A few stepsisters were born, but they all had little if any influence on the life of the first American Millionaire. Be it, that he did all in his mind to protect them from the hurts he knew so well.

John Jacob Astor An Unwritten Chapter by Calvin I. Hoy, L.L.B.
Preface
The publisher attempts to answer one question which has occupied many people for three quarters of a century. The Emerick family belonged to the early immigrants in America. They settled in New York and in Pennsylvania. Many of them fought in the Revolutionary War. Later they emigrated to Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. When the West opened up, they followed the pioneer trek to the Pacific Coast. Now they are dwelling in 42 states (1936). The most important member of the Emerick Family was John Nicholas Emerick.
During the time of the early settlers, he was a pioneer fur trader. During Astor's first trip to America he met the young John Jacob Astor. Since they were from the same country, a long friendship developed between them. Emerick interested Astor in the fur trade, and as soon as he arrived in New York and settled, he took up this trade. They worked together for a few years, which led to a partnership, that lasted for 29 years. The Emerick's of his generation were aware of this connection as well as about their success. After Emerick had died, he dropped out of the picture. Astor gained great wealth and great power in the fur trade. He came to be known as America's first millionaire as well as the richest man in the Nation. The old Emerick's are leaving the scene. The younger generations spread across the prairies, mining fields, into new areas, where they had lost the contact with John Nicholas and Astor. They seldom heard from their own relatives and friends.

John Jacob Astor I (1763-1848) Astor was a fur magnate and the founder of a renowned family of Anglo-American capitalists, business leaders, and philanthropists. His American Fur Company is considered the first U.S. business monopoly. Astor also invested in New York City real estate that became the foundation of the family fortune. His son, William Backhouse Astor (1792-1875), greatly expanded the family real estate holdings, building more than 700 stores and dwellings in New York City. The wealthiest person in the U.S. at the time of his death, the senior Astor bequeathed $400,000 for the founding of a public library, the Astor Library, in New York City, which was consolidated with others as the New York Public Library in 1895.
