For more information on feminist SF, see the Introduction (Wait until this page is completely downloaded before clicking.) Epigraphs Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 ... Historical Notes Many readers are surprised to hear Atwood's novel labeled science fiction, but it belongs squarely in the long tradition of near-future dystopias which has made up a large part of SF since the early50s. SF need not involve technological innovation: it has been a long-standing principle that social change can provide the basis for SF just as well as technical change. The Handmaid's Tale is partly an extrapolation of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, But another social controversy also underlies this novel. During the early 80s a debate raged (and continues to rage, on a lower level) about feminist attitudes toward sexuality and pornography in particular. Outspoken feminists have taken all kinds of positions: that all erotica depicting women as sexual objects is demeaning, that pornography was bad though erotica can be good, that although most pornography is demeaning the protection of civil liberties is a greater good which requires the toleration of freedom for pornographers, however distasteful, even that such a thing as feminist pornography can and should be created. The sub-theme of this tangled debate which seems to have particularly interested and alarmed Atwood is the tendency of some feminist anti-porn groups to ally themselves with religious anti-porn zealots who oppose the feminists on almost every other issue. The language of "protection of women" could slip from a demand for more freedom into a retreat from freedom, to a kind of neo-Victorianism. After all, it was the need to protect "good" women from sex that justified all manner of repression in the 19th century, including confining them to the home, barring them from participating in the arts, and voting. Contemporary Islamic women sometimes argue that assuming the veil and traditional all-enveloping clothing is aimed at dealing with sexual harassment and sexual objectification. The language is feminist, but the result can be deeply patriarchal, as in this novel.

    Essay by Jenna Wilson.
    http://athena.english.vt.edu/~exlibris/essays99/wilson.htm
E cofeminism in M argaret A twood's Surfacing Jenna Wilson Often referred to as a "feminist / ecological treatise" by critics, Margaret Atwood's Surfacing reflects the politics and issues of the postmodern society (Hutcheon 145). The narrator of the story (who remains nameless) returns to the undeveloped island that she grew up on to search for her missing father; in the process, she unmasks the dualities and inconsistencies in both her personal life and her patriarchal society. Through the struggle to reclaim her identity and roots, the Surfacer begins a psychological journey that leads her directly into the natural world. Like the journey itself, the language, events, and characters in Atwood's novel reflect a world that oppresses and dominates both femininity and nature. Strong and unmistakable in Surfacing, the ecofeminist theory establishes itself in three specific ways: through the references to patriarchal reasoned dualities between the masculine and feminine world; through the domination and oppression of the feminine and natural world, and through the Surfacer's own internal struggle and re-embracement of nature. Since "the voices of ecofeminism are diverse," it requires definition (Zabinski 315). A postmodern movement that "abandons the hardheaded scientific approach . . . in favor of a more spiritual consciousness," ecofeminist theory links the oppression of women with the oppression of nature (Salleh 339). More specifically, "ecological feminism is the position that there are important connections historical, experiential, symbolic, theoretical between the domination of women and the domination of nature, an understanding which is crucial to both feminism and environmental ethics" (Warren

    68. Ambiguities Of Counter Hegemonic Monologism In Margaret Atwood’s Surfacing
Essay from the Queen's University of Belfast.
    http://www.qub.ac.uk/english/imperial/canada/atwood.htm
    Surfacing
This page last revised 12 May 1998 In his book Ideologies of Epic In a post-colonial context and in the geographical context of Canada one can see in Surfacing how Atwood asserts a feminist counter hegemonic discourse with and within a discursive framing of Canadian national identity. In Surfacing the subaltern role could be filled by both male and female. The narrating I holds the discourse firmly. She alone has her inner consciousness exposed and denies others their consciousness. Unlike, say, Toni Morrison in Jazz , where questions of gender and race are dealt with through a narrative consciousness that moves fluidly from one voice to another. Anna walks out of the bedroom, dressed in jeans and shirt again. She combs her hair in front of the mirror, light ends, dark roots, humming to herself. You are my sunshine; smoke twines up from her cigarette. Help, I think at her silently, talk. And she does. Wide Sargasso Sea it is open-ended. As Bakhtin identifies, purity in monologic discourse is a theoretical ideal. She has to engage, in some way, with the other. The search for her father, be it actual or maetaphorical, is an engagement.

Margaret Atwood 1939 - This essay will examine the female protagonists of Margaret Atwood's Bodily Harm and The Handmaid's Tale . Rennie, of Bodily Harm and Offred, of The Handmaid's Tale are both women in their thirties used by the author to explore how they react to 'oppression in all its manifestations, both physical and psychological' [1]. Atwood, in her later novels and poems, seems to focus on the struggle in which she sees men and women as being caught up: 'Who can do what to whom and get away with it.' Bodily Harm 'focuses on the contrast between affluent thinking and the brutal reality of power and sexual politics.' [2] The protagonist Rennie is a 'lifestyle journalist' who has just had a mastectomy. Atwood traces her internal torment in dealing with this, her troubled childhood, her relationship with men and a violent society at large.

her claim to Connecticut, and the deep
satisfaction of a clean, folded towel BY LAURA MILLER an Salon met up with Atwood during her recent visit to San Francisco, where she professed to be able to guess how many servants it took to maintain the city's various Victorian mansions, just by looking. You've written about Grace Marks before. Yes, a TV scenario, produced in 1974 by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, but it used only one version of the story, which was the only version that I knew at that time. That was [journalist] Susanna Moodie's rather theatrical and Dickensian write-up of the case. I was young and I thought non-fiction meant "true," and I believed her mostly. I didn't believe the part where she had Nancy being cut up into four pieces before being placed underneath the wash-tub, because I thought, "Why would they do that? Wouldn't it take a lot of time? And which four pieces? Why four and why do it at all?" So, that gave you a germ of suspicion.
