Aubrey's 'Brief Lives'
April 5, 2002 John Aubrey (1626-1697) was singularly unsuccessful in his worldly affairs. Having lost all his rather extensive property in a tangle of disastrous lawsuits, he was free to devote himself to sociability (he was well-loved by a large circle of friends, including some of the leading men of his time) and his antiquarian interests. Aubrey was a pioneering archaeologist and an indefatigable researcher. He had lived through the English Civil War and the Commonwealth, and he was acutely aware that since then everything had changed: continuity had been broken; the whole pre-Puritan world had passed out of existence; and he felt a strong urge to preserve what he could. Nevertheless, Aubrey lived in the present: he was one of the original members of the Royal Society and he remained fully abreast of the advances of his day. He began collecting biographical material when the dreadful Oxford don Anthony Wood enlisted him to provide material for Wood's dictionary of Oxford writers and churchmen; but Aubrey's gathering of biographical facts soon took on a life of its own. He collected vast amounts of material, but he was constitutionally unable to bring work to a finished state. His

A 'THANK YOU' TO JOHN AND MERELYN AUBREY...
I want to give a hug to John and Merelyn Aubrey. They are the kind of employer that everyone would want to work for. After working for them for almost thirteen years I feel I have gotten to know them pretty well. They truly treat people as they would want to be treated as the Bible teaches us to do. John and Merelyn go way beyond what most employers do to see that the employees as well as clients are treated with respect and care. If one of us hurt with a problem they truly hurt with us. They never forget a special occasion in our lives. They are far beyond fair in all their dealings with employees and clients. An example of a special occasion in my life was when I celebrated my 10 year anniversary of work with them. They gave me time off work and a ticket to fly to NY to visit with my Grandchildren and their parents. I shall never forget that. This is just one example of the many remembrances of occasions in my life since I have worked here. They do so much to make Mr John's an enjoyable place to work and also a pleasant place for the clients. We are like one big happy family.

. He attended Bene't College, Cambridge (now known as Corpus Christi College ) of which his father had been president, but when his father died in 1596 he was in bad financial circumstances. Virtually nothing is known about him until 1606, when he is recorded as one of the group of literary men and wits who gathered at the Mermaid Tavern . This is where he likely met his most famous collaborator, William Shakespeare , along with Ben Jonson and Francis Beaumont , with whom his name is almost inextricably bound when his comedies are discussed. Fletcher's collaboration with Beaumont lasted from 1607 until the latter's death in 1616. He also wrote plays in conjunction with Massinger, Middleton, Rowley, and Jonson himself.

    John Aubrey (1626-1697)
John Aubrey was an English antiquary and miscellaneous writer. He was born in Kingston, Wiltshire, and educated at Trinity College, Oxford. His most famous work is "Lives of Eminent Men", which was not published, however, until 1823. He also wrote "Miscellanies" , a collection of stories and folklore, the "Natural History of Wiltshire" (edited by John Britton, 1847) , and a "Perambulation of Surrey". His most important contribution to the study of British antiquities, the lengthy and discursive "Monumenta Britannica", remains in manuscript. A scheme was afoot in 1692 to publish the manuscript and a prospectus and a specimen page were issued in 1693, but nothing more came of the project. It contains the results of Aubry's field-work at Avebury and Stonehenge and notes on many other ancient sites, including Wayland's Smithy. Apparently the original title of the manuscript was to be "Templa Druidum". It was Aubrey who, in 1648, at the age of 22, while out hunting with some friends near Avebury in Wiltshire, recognized in the earthworks and great stones placed about the landscape in and about the village a great prehistoric temple. In the following century, William Stukeley was to develop the claim that

    Aubrey's Old Engine Collection
I really enjoy taking beat up, rusty old engines and making them run again. Many of them didn't start or run well in the first place, which adds to the challenge. And I like the sound that hit and miss engines make when they run. A Fairbanks Morse 'DZ' (far right above) was the first hopper cooled engine I got running. After cranking it all one Saturday afternoon without result (straining chest muscles into the bargain), I overhauled the mixer and the magneto. It also needed a new gas tank, which I purchased, and new skids, which I made. It runs very well now and starts fair. I suspect this engine worked hard as the belt pulley is well worn.
Hercules Engine - 3 HP The Hercules was one of my first engines, one of two purchased - with typical beginners luck - for a total of $150 at an auction. Sadly, I did not pick up the John Deere E which sold for $60. I bought the Hercules 'E' (above) at the same auction as the FM 'DZ'. The auctioneer said is was a John Deere, because it was painted green I guess. I did not have any experience with a Webster ignitor and took a long time to figure it out. (What about the finishing - the paint and the decals?)
