The Relationship between Rome and Judea prior to Jesus' public life On August 19, 14 CE at 3:00 PM, Augustus Caesar dies, 35 days from his 76 th birthday, at Nola in Campania. Tiberius becomes emperor. Dupondis of Tiberius Tiberius Claudius Nero was born in 42 B.C.E., the son of Tiberius Nero, Julius Caesar’s naval commander and hero of the Alexandrian War, and his wife Livia. Hounded and pursued by Octavian/Augustus and the triumvirs, Nero was constantly "on the run" as a result of his Republican convictions. As a result, the first 4 years of Tiberius life was one of great hardships. At the age of 4, Octavian forced his parents to divorce and married Livia. The heirs to Augustus’ throne were his grandsons, Gaius and Lucius, the children of his daughter Julia and Marcus Agrippa. When Agrippa died in 12 B.C.E., Augustus forced his stepson to divorce his beloved and pregnant wife Vipsania to marry his widowed daughter Julia. By 4 CE, both Gaius and Lucius had died and Augustus adopted Tiberius. 26 CE th prefect of Judea, Samaria, and Idumea, Pontius Pilatu

... Constantine and Constantinople Caesar Augustus With the death of Marc Antony in 31 BC , Octavian became the sole ruler of Rome. Octavian took measures to earn the loyalty of the Roman army. He encouraged the soldiers to retire from the army by providing them with land. Once the soldiers retired, Octavian did not have to be concerned with the army turning on him. Further, Octavian knew he could count on the soldiers' support if he was challenged by the Senate. Octavian restored peace and order to Rome. He made sure the lands throughout the empire were well run and taxes were fair. Octavian built massive roads and bridges, government buildings, and huge public baths. He said, "I left Rome a city of marble, though I found it a city of bricks." The Roman people awarded Octavian with the title Augustus, which means, "respected one." Many Romans deified Augustus after his death. This means they worshipped him as a god.

Roman Empire
Definition: The first Roman Emperor. His real name was Octavian, and he was Julius Caesar's adopted son. He played a large role in the civil war that followed Julius Caesar's assassination, and his victory and strength made him an ideal candidate to fill the void in government left by Caesar's death. In between, he was a member of the Second Triumvirate, along with Marc Antony and Lepidus. When Antony became involved with Cleopatra (Egypt's pharaoh) and decided to fight Rome, Octavian played a part in defeating Antony's forces. Once Antony was out of the way and Lepidus was forced to retire, Octavian was free to become Augustus Caesar. Related Resources:

http://members.tripod.com/LiamK/caesar/augustus.htm
Augustus Caesar Augustus was born as Gaius Octavius on September 23, 63 BC. His mother was the daughter of the sister of Julius Caesar. Augustus first began his climb to power by serving in varius military positions under Julius Caesar. When Julius was assassinated in 44 BC, Augustus hurried back to Rome where he found the power in the hands of Mark Antony and Aemilius Lepidus. Eventually, they formed a triumvirate and defeated the assassins of Julius The triumvirate did not last long however, because Lepidus was killed trying to take some of Augustus's power. Augustus then shared power with Antony. War was declared on Antony when the senate learned that he lived openly with Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt. He was defeated by Augustus's forces at Actium on September 2, 31 BC. After this, it was only a few years before Augustus had sole power over the empire. Augustus had used his skills as a politician to convince the senate to give him power. One of the reasons that they let him have the power was that he had brought peace to Rome. Augustus continued this idea and did not like to have himself promoted as anything more than first citizen. He did not even have an imperial palace. Augustus had started a golden age in Rome, which was to continue until after his death in 14 AD. One of the greatest concerns of Augustus was who would be heir to the throne. Because his current wife Livia had no children by him, he focused these plans around his daughter Julia; who had been born by his previous wife Scribonia. Unfortunately, every viable successor died before Augustus died. Livia's children were not considered because they were not of the Julian blood line. Possible successors had included: Marcellus (his nephew), Gaius, Lucius, and Agrippa Postumus (his grandsons), and Agrippa (the military commander who had won Actium). All of these people were killed, along with

Both men and women to return,
The same to pay without delay,
Unto the town where they were born. 2. When aged Joseph with his Mary,
Caesar's precepts to fulfill,
After many a weary journey
Came to Bethlehem with good will, To pay their due, with obedience too, Unto the prince that they were sworn, Whilst they were there, our Saviour dear, To set us free, that time was born. 3. Blessed Mary, though a Virgin, Yet a wife, and great with child, Weary of her blessed burden, Did intreat with speeches mild In every inn, but could not win A lodging, thus was left forlorn In wofull state with her dear mate, Yet there our Saviour Christ was born. 4. So that at last they were constrained In a stable to be laid

Source: William Sandys, Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern (London: Richard Beckley, 1833) 1. Augustus Caesar having brought
The world to quiet peace,
That all the noise of bloody wars
In every land did cease;
Just Joseph, with his Mary mild,
To Bethlehem did come,
Which blessed place appointed was
To ease her burden'd womb Chorus
O sing we all, with heart and voice,
Let Christian love increase,
For unto us this day is born The only Prince of Peace. 2. Then, all the town being full of guests, Such was their helpless case, That not a bed for them was left, Nor any lodging place; But in a poor and simple inn, Even an ox's stall Appointed was to entertain The Saviour of us all. Chorus 3. No mantle, nor no rich attire, No swaddling bands, nor linen rare, No costly robes, nor golden treasure, Could Jesus Christ our Lord have there. No other nurse nor lullaby, But blessed Mary's arms, To rock this blessed babe to sleep, With heavenly hymns and charms.

Augustus Caesar Essay written by Unknown The year 509 BC Rome finally became a Republic and thus started the Roman empire. As Rome rose to power they went through many wars and many conflicts between the plebeians and patricians. The republic was made out of 3 groups, the consuls which were 2 men elected from the senate, the senate which was made of 300 patricians, and the assembly made from plebeians. Many years later Rome started to reject the republic when it went into a series of civil wars. 3 men form the first triumvirate, Julius Caesar, Pompeii, and Crassus. Julius Caesar became the victor. He was then rewarded dictator for life. On the date September 23, 63 BC a boy was born. He was originally Caesar's grand-nephew. This boy would later grow to a power and change Rome for good.
Around the years 16-15 BC, was formed the beginning of a civil service in Rome. This had never been done before but was destined to become an essential feature of the imperial system. Around the same time, a completely reformed administrative structure of Rome, Italy, and the entire empire was matured. The empire's financial system at the time was far more superior to anything else in the entire empire. This great financial system was based on the central treasury, but the details of its relationship with the treasuries of the provinces, and most of all the province of Augustus, are still unsatisfactory understood. Mainly because, even though the emperor proudly recorded his gifts to the central treasury, he did not report what funds passed in the opposite direction.
