His work is unusual in that it is the fusion of four distinct traditions: Russian, Hebrew, Yiddish and French. Besides the short stories for which he is most famous, he also wrote several plays and screenplays. Most of his early years were spent in the Black Sea port Nikolaev. The atmosphere of the persecution of Jews is reflected in the pessimism of his stories, although his childhood was relatively confortable. He studied violin, German, French and Talmud at the Nicholas I Commercial Institute (1905-11), then attended the Institute of Business Studies in Kiev and later Saratov (1911-15). He then moved to St. Petersburg, where he studied literature. His first works were published in 1916 in Letopis , a monthly edited by Maksim Gorky. On Gorky's advice Babel decided to see the world and learn about life. He participated briefly in the war on the Romanian front. Invalided out, he joined the staff of Gorky's newspaper Novaya Zhizn . During the Revolution he worked probably as a clerk for the Commissariat of Education and for the CheKa, the Soviet Secret Police.

Isaac Babel (1894-1941?)
commentary by Karen Bernardo Isaac Babel was born in the Russian city of Odessa. His father was a merchant, and sources differ about the family’s economic status; but unquestionably Isaac deeply felt the persecution that came with being Jewish. He began to write as a teenager and met Maxim Gorky, another Russian writer, who published several of Babel’s stories in the periodical Letopis
However, Russian censors, unable to comprehend what Babel was trying to do, had Babel charged with obscenity. Babel seems to have concluded that the best solution to his sense of “differentness” was to abdicate the lifestyle of a Jewish intellectual altogether. This was also in response to Gorky’s advice to get more life experience with commoners. He joined the Cossacks, an experience which provided the background for his short story collection Red Cavalry , which he would write several years later in his life.
But the life of a Cossack soldier was not for him. Babel had been raised on equal doses of Talmudic scholasticism and French literature, neither of which were compatible with the brutality he saw during his tenure as a supply officer in the Russian Army. He moved to Moscow in 1923 and began writing in earnest. He completed Red Cavalry , a book of short stories based on his youth entitled Odessa Tales , and several other short fiction collections as well as several plays and works for the cinema.

Isaac Babel
"We knew each other for barely twelve years. He was always one of my staunchest defenders, even when the literary establishment was hounding me for not publishing anything in the 1930s. Ehrenburg said that some writers write like rabbits. Others, like me, resembled elephants. After my arrest in 1939, Stalin's secret police tortured me and made me implicate Ehrenburg as a spy. I was afraid he would be arrested too. Still, his secretary in Moscow was the only person to give money to my wife in Moscow when she was left alone with our daughter. Rubenstein is right to emphasize how Ehrenburg insured my 'rehabilitation" in the 1950s and championed the publication of my work. Without his intervention, who knows how long it would have taken the Kremlin to allow my name in print again."

So begins A. N. Pirozhkova's moving memoir of her life with Isaac Babel, perhaps the Soviet Union's greatest writer, and one of the literary world's most lively and endearing characters. Babel's fame is based on his stories of the Jews in Odessa and his novel Red Cavalry (1926). He was the first major Russian Jewish writer to write in Russian. "The music of its style contrasts with the almost ineffable brutality of certain scenes.
One of the stories - "Salt" - enjoys a glory seemingly reserved for poems, and rarely attained by prose: many people know it by heart."
(Jorge Luis Borges on Red Cavalry in Total Library Isaak Babel was born in the Jewish ghetto of Odessa, Ukraine. Most of his early years he spent in the Black Sea port Nikolaev, 90 miles away. The atmosphere of the persecution of Jews is reflected in the pessimism of his stories, although his childhood was relatively comfortable. At a time when most Jews were forbidden to live in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, and other localities, Odessa had many times more Jews than any other city in the Russian part of the empire. However, between 1881 and 1917 two million Jews left Russia, mostly for America. Babel's father was a successful businessman who installed his family in one of the best streets in Odessa. Babel studied violin, German, French, and Talmud at the Nicholas I Commercial Institute (1905-11) and wrote stories at the age of fifteen in imitation of Guy de Maupassant. In 1915 Babel graduated from Kiev University which had been evacuated to Saratov on the Volga because of the war.

Ashton, John and Whyte, Tom. The Quest for Paradise: Visions of Heaven and Eternity in the World's Myths and Religions. HarperSanFrancisco, $30 (0-06-251735-X).
Michelangelo's Creation of Adam and Bob Marley's Rastafarian reggae are just two of the artworks chronicled in this beautifully illustrated survey of various religions' perceptions of paradise, beginning with ancient Egyptian and Buddhist visions and concluding with an optimistic apparition of Earth as a global garden. Babel, Isaac. The Complete Works of Isaac Babel. Ed. by Nathalie Babel. Tr. by Peter Constantine. illus. Norton, $39.95 (0-393-04846-2).
Remembered primarily for his scorching Red Calvary stories, Babel (1894-1940), elusive and intriguing, was a brave, imaginative, and essential witness of the war against the Jews and the Soviet debacle. This magnificently produced, comprehensive collection preserves Babel whole, in all the terror and vitality of his vision.

Babel, Isaac Emmanuelovich 1894-1941, Russian short-story writer and playwright. Babel won fame with Odessa Tales (1921-23), written in a Russo-Jewish jargon, and Red Cavalry (1926, tr. 1929), dramatic stories based on his life in the army and employing the racy slang of the Kuban Cossacks. A brilliant stylist, he combined astringent Jewish irony with Russian caricature. He turned to drama in Sunset (1928) and Maria (1935). He was criticized during the 1930s by the Communist party and was arrested in 1938. Babel was arrested in 1939 and disappeared; apparently he was executed. After Stalin's death, some of his works were republished in censored form in the Soviet Union. Translations of his best stories appear in Collected Stories (1955) and You Must Know Everything See study by P. Carden (1972).
