Bernard Quaritch Ltd.
BABEL'S FIRST APPEARANCE IN ENGLISH BABEL, Isaac. Red Cavalry. London: Knopf, 1929. 8vo., pp. 255; original orange cloth, lettered in black on spine, top edge stained black, faint offsetting to endpapers; a near fine copy in a dust-jacket with loss to head and tail of spine, and an invisible closed tear to front panel, which is otherwise wholly intact; a near-fine copy of a title rarely found with jacket. First edition in English, and the first appearance in English of his work, translated from the Russian by John Harland. A young Jewish revolutionary, Isaac Babel became famous in Russia as a short-story writer before his death in 1940 at the hands of an OGPU firing squad. By the time of his rehabilitation in the mid-fifties his name as a writer of short stories had become known in the West. The collection Konarmiya (literally 'Horse Army'), translated as Red Cavalry, described in graphic detail the abortive Soviet campaign against Poland in 1920, and revealed that he had been an eyewitness and a sensational reporter of war experiences. In a capsule biography of the author written in 1938, Borges made much of the remarkable nature of Babel's endeavour in joining the Cossacks, a notoriously anti-semetic regiment, and wrote of this volume:
His unmatched book is titled Red Cavalry. The music of its style contrasts with the almost ineffable brutality of certain scenes. One of the stories - 'Salt' - enjoys a glory seemingly reserved for poems, and rarely attained by prose: many people know it by heart. (The Total Library, p. 164).

http://www.digitalrag.com/tangled/thecafe.html
This site is dedicated to the circle of writers, artists, and political figures who frequented the Rotonde Cafe in the Latin Quarter of Paris during the 1920s and 30s: Isaac Babel, Ilya Ehrenburg, Pablo Picasso, Anna Akhmatova, Joseph Stalin, and Amedeo Modigliani. BIOGRAPHY
Isaac Babel (1894-1939?) was born in the Moldavanka district of Odessa, in Russia. His father, a Jewish businessman, made him study Yiddish, the Bible, and the Talmud, but his favorite subject was French literature. By the time Babel was fifteen he began to write stories in French, "a la Maupassant," and his later story "Guy de Maupassant" (1932) is a tribute to the influence of this writer.

Babel, Isaac Emmanuelovich E u OO A u u l]
Pronunciation Key
Babel, Isaac Emmanuelovich , Russian short-story writer and playwright, b. Odessa. Babel won fame with Odessa Tales Red Cavalry (1926, tr. 1929), dramatic stories based on his life in the army and employing the racy slang of the Kuban Cossacks. (The original journal from which this book was written, 1920 Journal, was published in Russia as the Soviet Union disintegrated and translated into English in 1995.) A brilliant stylist, he combined astringent Jewish irony with Russian caricature, lyricism with brutality. He turned to drama in Sunset (1928) and Maria (1935). Babel was criticized by the Communist party during the 1930s, arrested in 1939, and was executed after a 20-minute trial. After Stalin's death, some of his works were republished in censored form in the Soviet Union. Translations of his best stories appear in Collected Stories (1955) and You Must Know Everything See memoir by his companion, Antonina Pirozhkova (tr. 1996); study by P. Carden (1972).
