British Painter 1909-92 Francis Bacon's style is that of a figurative painter bordering on the abstract. He was a magician at conjuring up the tension between two people on the canvas. He produced disturbing, but at the same time comical paintings.

(John Deakin, Francis Bacon A Maverick Eye: The Photography of John Deakin
30 October 2002 to 12 January 2003
Dean Gallery, Belford Road, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK
Part of the Lloyds TSB Scotland Year of Photography at the National Galleries of Scotland
The photographs of John Deakin (1912-1972) have a clarity of vision and a brutal directness: their intensity is both fascinating and shocking in equal measure. Whether he was photographing writers, artists, fashion models, or Hollywood stars for British Vogue (where he achieved notoriety for being fired twice), or portraying his artist and poet friends in London's bohemia, Deakin made no concessions to his subjects' vanity. His friend, the painter Francis Bacon, also commissioned and used Deakin's photographs as the basis for several of his works. The exhibition has been selected by Robin Muir, former picture editor at Vogue and specialist on Deakin's work. It will include over 150 photographs of people and places, many of them previously unseen, captured by the unrelenting eye of a photographer who was both loved and loathed for his character and his work.

Biography
Francis Bacon
Artist England Born 28 Oct 1909
Died 28 Apr 1992
The emotional impact that Bacon's work makes depends not only on his imagery - characteristically single figures in isolation and despair - but also on his handling of paint, by means of which he smudged and twisted faces and bodies into ill-defined jumbled protuberances suggestive of formless, sluglike creatures from some nightmare fantasy: 'I would like my pictures to look as if a human being had passed between them, like a snail, leaving a trail of the human presence and memory trace of past events as the snail leaves its slime.'
From the 1950s Bacon's work was shown in numerous exhibitions in Europe and the USA and won him an international reputation as one of the giants of contemporary art. In the catalogue of a major retrospective exhibition of his work held at the Tate Gallery in 1985, the Director of the gallery, Alan Bowness, called Bacon the 'greatest living painter' a judgement in which many critics at the time incurred, although others found the unrelenting pessimism of his vision hard to take. Alongside his reputation as a painter he built up a sulphurous personal legend on account of his promiscuous homosexuality, hard drinking, and heavy gambling.

for Shakespeare Authorship
Francis Bacon "There be some whose lives are as if they perpetually played a part upon a stage, disguised to all others,
open only to themselves."
Francis Bacon from The Essay of Friendship The clearest indication of Bacon using another name for his work is in Tobie Matthew's letter to Bacon , in 1623, written from France: "The most prodigious wit, that ever I knew of my nation, and of this side of the sea, is of your Lordship's name, though he be known by another. In 1603, Bacon wrote to a friend of his, the poet, John Davies , who had gone north to meet the King: "So desiring you to be good to concealed poets, I continue, yours very assured, Fr. Bacon." "The wisdom displayed in Shakespeare was equal in profoundness to the great Lord Bacon's Novum Organum William Hazlitt
"Lord Bacon was the greatest genius that England, or perhaps any country, ever produced."
Alexander Pope , 1741 "In Shakespeare's plays we have Thought, History, Exposition, Philosophy, all within the round of the poet. It is as if into a mind poetical in form there had been poured all the matter which existed in the mind of his contemporary Bacon. The only difference between him and Bacon sometimes is that Bacon writes an Essay and calls it his own, while Shakespeare writes a similar essay and puts it into the mouth of a Ulysses or a Polonius." orthodox Professor David Mason Constance Pott "Two things were strenuously avoided by Bacon; the direct mention of the name of Shakespeare, and the literal quotation of any passages from the Plays. This man of genius, coming forward in the essays as commentator on his own works, always clothed his elucidations in words other than those he chose as the poet

Bacon, Francis (1561-1626)

English philosopher, and later Lord Chancellor of England, who was displeased with the state of natural philosophy. He felt that knowledge is not abstract reason, but the application of facts. This drive towards applications was novel in physics. Like Descartes , Bacon was skeptical of both reason and observation. He grouped the ways in which human reason could be deceived into Idylls of the Cave (a person's views are influenced by those around him), Idylls of the Marketplace (erroneous arguments can appear convincing), and Idylls of the Theater (theories about the world can be erroneous). Bacon believed that the senses can't be trusted, but neither can reason be relied upon. He maintained that nature could only be understood using instruments to actively "torture" it (vita activa) and reveal its secrets. He believed that understanding could not start from first principles (which only lead further astray), but must be obtained by performing a series of experiments and making generalizations by induction. This approach, published in

Canonbury Tower is a remarkably preserved Tudor building, first built as part of a country residence for the Prior of St. Bartholomew in the time of King Henry VII, and later transformed into a mansion by Sir John Spenser in the time of Queen Elizabeth I. Sir John was a good friend of Sir Francis Bacon, as was his son in law, Lord Compton, 1st Earl of Northampton, who inherited the mansion. The rooms of Canonbury were embellished by Sir John with carved oak panelling and fireplaces, with Freemasonic and Rosicrucian symbols, indicating a connection with the secret Rosicrucians societies of his day. OF TRUTH
To pass from theological, and philosophical truth, to the truth of civil business; it will be acknowledged, even by those that practise it not, that clear, and round dealing, is the honor of man's nature; and that mixture of falsehoods, is like alloy in coin of gold and silver, which may make the metal work the better, but it embaseth it. For these winding, and crooked courses, are the goings of the serpent; which goeth basely upon the belly, and not upon the feet. There is no vice, that doth so cover a man with shame, as to be found false and perfidious. And therefore Montaigne saith prettily, when he inquired the reason, why the word of the lie should be such a disgrace, and such an odious charge? Saith he, If it be well weighed, to say that a man lieth, is as much to say, as that he is brave towards God, and a coward towards men. For a lie faces God, and shrinks from man. Surely the wickedness of falsehood, and breach of faith, cannot possibly be so highly expressed, as in that it shall be the last peal, to call the judgments of God upon the generations of men; it being foretold, that when Christ cometh, he shall not find faith upon the earth.
OF DEATH
bestowed too much cost upon death, and by their great preparations, made it appear more fearful. Better saith he qui finem vitae extremum inter munera ponat naturae. It is as natural to die, as to be born; and to a little infant, perhaps, the one is as painful, as the other. He that dies in an earnest pursuit, is like one that is wounded in hot blood; who, for the time, scarce feels the hurt; and therefore a mind fixed, and bent upon somewhat that is good, doth avert the dolors of death. But, above all, believe it, the sweetest canticle is, Nunc dimittis; when a man hath obtained worthy ends, and expectations. Death hath this also; that it openeth the gate to good fame, and extinguisheth envy. -Extinctus amabitur idem.
