Manchester University Press (distributed by St. Martin's Press in the U.S.), July 1999, 220 pp., ISBN 0-7190-5475-5, $79.95
Description:
This is the first time that a selection from the whole of Joanna Baillie's lyric poetry has been reprinted in a single volume. Her poetry ranged from songs and lyrical ballads to dramatic monologues and realistic blank verse poems relating to her youth in the Scottish countryside and her life in London. This book places Baillie's best poetry where it belongsin the Romantic canon, demonstrably the equal of and the formative link between Robert Burns's Scottish poetry and William Wordsworth's meditations on Nature. The introduction sets her lyric poems in their Scottish context as well as linking her work with the Romantic Period (1785-1832) generally.

Closet Stages: Joanna Baillie and the Theater Theory of British Romantic Women Writers
University of Pennsylvania Press, 1997, 264 pp., ISBN 08122-3393-X, $39.95
Description:
Closet Stages examines theater theory produced by middle- and upper-class British women playwrights, actresses and spectators between 1790 and 1840. Shifting the focus away from the Romantic male writers to the journals, letters, and play pre faces in which women framed their relationship to the theater arts, Catherine Burroughs reveals how a concern with the performative aspects of daily life and the movement between public and private spheres produced a notion of theater that complicates the Romantic opposition between "closet" and "stage." Burroughs' subjects include Sarah Siddons, Elizabeth Inchbald, Hannah Cowley, Hannah More and others. At the center of her book, however, is Joanna Baillie, the most important woman playwright and dramatic theorist of the age. Focusing on the strategies t hese women used to represent their performance of gender in public and private contexts, Burroughs shows how their conception of femininity influenced their views of theatrical practice and social performance and explains how closet drama broke down the g endered realms of public opinion and private conduct. The first book on Baillie in more than fifty years and the first ever to theorize the process of recovering pre-twentieth-century women's writings about the stage

PAGE. madam, there is a lady in your hall,
Who begs to be admitted to your presence.
LADY. Is it not one of our invited friends?
PAGE. No, far unlike to them; it is a stranger.
LADY. How looks her countenance?
PAGE. So queenly, so commanding, and so noble,
I shrunk at first in awe; but when she smil'd,
For "so" she did to see me thus abash'd, Methought I could have compassed sea and land To do her bidding. LADY. Is she young or old? PAGE. Neither, if right I guess, but she is fair; For time hath laid his hand so gently on her As he too had been aw'd. LADY. The foolish stripling! She has bewitched thee, boy. Is she large in stature? PAGE. So stately and so graceful is her form I thought at first her stature was gigantick, But on a near approach I found, in truth, She scarcely does surpass the middle size. LADY. What is her garb?

Joanna Baillie: A Selection of Poems and Plays
The Pickering Women's Classics Edited by Amanda Gilroy and Keith Hanley The contents of this selection, compiled in consultation with eighteen leading specialists in the field will include Baillie's plays - De Montfort Basil A Family Legend and The Martyr , together with selected poetry and criticisms. The Scottish dramatist and poet Joanna Baillie (1762-1851) is one of the most important figures to have emerged from the recent redefinition of the Romantic canon. Highly regarded by her literary contemporaries, her Plays on the Passions were widely appreciated and extremely influential during the mid-nineteenth century, and her 'Introductory Discourse' has been seen as an anticipation of Wordsworth's 1800 preface to Lyrical Ballads

SCHOOL RHYMES FOR NEGRO CHILDREN How happy are we in that hour we love,
When shadows grow longer and branches move;
Blithe urchins then we be!
From the school's low porch with a joyous shout,
We rush and we run and we gambol about,
So careless, light and free!
And the good child merrily plays his part,
For all is well in his guileless heart,
The glance of his eye is bright.
We hop and we leap and we toss the ball;
Some dance to their shadows upon the wall, And spread out their hands with delight. The parrot that sits on her bough a-swinging, The bird and the butterfly, light air winging, And scarcely more happy, I trow. Then hey for the meadow, the glade and the grove, For evening is coming and branches move, We'll have merry pastime now. RHYMES FOR CHANTING B UTTERFLY , butterfly, speed through the air, The ring-bird follows thee fast
