Nicholson Baker and Preservation
The publication of Nicholson Baker’s Double Fold has focused attention on some of the problems research libraries face in helping to preserve our intellectual and cultural heritage. Although we do not share some of Mr. Baker’s conclusions, we welcome the attention he has focused on the preservation challenge. The pamphlet, Preserving Research Collections: A Collaboration Between Librarians and Scholars by Jutta Reed-Scott published by the Association of Research Librarians, the Modern Language Association, and the American Historical Association on behalf of the Task Force on the Preservation of the Artifact in 1999 addresses some of the preservation challenges facing research libraries. It provides a different perspective on the complexities of library preservation. The University of Washington is fortunate to be located in an area with environmental conditions that are not as detrimental for the preservation of library materials as in some other locations. There are not the extremes of temperature and humidity, e.g., which have contributed to the deterioration of library materials in other parts of the country. Random sample collection surveys of some of our collections in 2000 and 2001 indicate that although a very high percentage of our books and serials are printed on acidic paper, brittle paper is not as significant of a problem as in many libraries in the eastern half of the country. We do want to assure that our collections are stored under as optimal of environmental conditions as possible since good environmental conditions can extend the life of those collections. This summer, e.g., we will begin to field test a computerized system for gathering and interpreting data on environmental conditions in collection storage areas by monitoring temperature and humidity in our Sand Point Shelving Facility. The system uses advanced dataloggers and software recently developed by the Image Permanence Institute (IPI) at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

http://www.arborweb.com/reviews/0302.nicholsonbaker-review.html

Nicholson Baker The obsessive detail Nicholson Baker has carved out a unique place for himself in American letters: he is our master of the obsessive detail. All of his novels spin out from a microscopic look at a small, often mundane action. It should come as no surprise that the two that deal with sexuality, Vox and The Fermata, are the most widely known, but they are simply a variation on a pattern Baker has used in other ways in different books. Vox, written in the early 1990s, is about phone sex, and its great success is that it manages to be gently pornographic and wildly funny at the same time. Baker's brilliance is that he makes all this seem funny, and he makes it seem significant. He doesn't give us many clues about Emmett's personality other than his obsessions, but they're more than enough to let us understand him. At one point, while discussing the duck outdoors in winter, Emmett says, "I want to take care of the world." And Nicholson Baker can almost convince us that this is some kind of ultimate nobility. Nicholson Baker is in town for a week, reading from his fiction at the Michigan Union on Monday, February 3, and lecturing at Davidson Hall on Wednesday, February 5, about his campaign to preserve hard copies of old newspapers.

An Interview with Nicholson Baker
by Alexander Laurence and David Strauss
(c) 1994 Alexander Laurence and David Strauss
Alexander Laurence:
So you studied music in school. You were a musician for a while. What instruments did you study?
Nicholson Baker:
I originally wanted to be a composerI played the bassoon at the Eastman school of music. I was an applied music major and I was briefly the utility bassoonist for a philharmonic orchestra which meant that if they had a huge Mahler concert, they would hire me as a fourth bassoon. By that time I was half-serious about it all. I spent hours at the piano trying to write piano sonatas. I realized that I didn't have the hardware to be a composer. Eventually it became clear that I would have to pick a different art.
AL:
Is there any period of music that interests you?
NB:
I went through a big Bartok phase. I like Brahms. I listen now to pop music. While I was writing The Fermata , I listened to Suzanne Vega a lot.

N Have you always been drawn to minutiae? Oh, yes. I have that problem. When I was working on perspective in art class, the drawings that I would do would be of the wall socket, but vast and worked out right from wall's eye view, and diminishing. And it is kind of hard to draw the little holes in the plug in perspective, if you're at a very rakish angle. I've always liked to inspect lichens at close range. I don't know what caused that cast of thought. At the same time, I would write in my notebooks about all these ambitions of writing enormous books, huge subjects for novels, but the only time I actually felt pleasure writing was when I had turned the lens a little bit and was focusing on something carefully and was able to revolve it in my mind. It's not automatic, I don't feel as if I'm a description machine cranking myself slowly in one direction, fixing on something, spitting out a description of it, and then moving on to the next thing. What it feels like is that, instead, I have some pressing point I want to make about the coils of a toaster. Next page: Of lumber and other obsessions

Q and A in Response to Nicholson Baker's Double Fold
How accurate are Baker's claims about the durability of paper? Some paper - stored under ideal conditions and seldom used - may be in surprisingly good shape, considering its age. There is a commonly held view that paper deterioration slows over time and highly acidic paper, properly stored and handled, will remain in usable condition indefinitely. Research, however, does not support this view. Studies at the Library of Congress and at other institutions clearly demonstrate that the degradation and embrittlement of paper may slow but does not stop. The accumulation of acids within closed books continues inexorably and is the basis of a continuous paper degradation. Why do libraries use the double-fold test to measure a paper's strength and durability?

Interview: Nicholson Baker
Writer Nicholson Baker has authored five novels, including The Mezzanine Room Temperature Vox The Fermata and The Everlasting Story of Nory . He has also published U and I , a personal meditation on his 'relationship' with John Updike, and a collections of essays, The Size of Thoughts . Nicholson Baker lives in Maine, with his wife and children, where he is trying to write the novel he was writing before he got caught up in the issues of his latest book. Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper is his singular and impassioned description of American libraries' systematic dismantling of our newspaper archives and the destruction of huge numbers of rare books. In the course of writing this compelling expose, Baker has presented an alarming story of the betrayal of the public trust by our greatest research libraries, including the Library of Congress, by their disposal of irreplaceable collections:
