Particular obsessions
Nicholson Baker's books have chronicled the minutiae of daily existence, explored phone sex and paid homage to John Updike. John O'Mahony reports
Saturday January 11, 2003
The Guardian

Good morning. It's 5.46, and Nicholson Baker is stumbling around his kitchen in South Berwick, Maine, in his dressing gown and slippers, searching out a carton of milk for his coffee. In homage to his latest novel, A Box of Matches, which centres on an obsessive early riser whose cheery morning salutation and time-check opens each chapter, Baker has agreed to a pre-dawn interview that will conjure up the setting of the novel and demonstrate how it was written. After retrieving milk from the fridge, releasing the same "sudden howl of light" described in his narrative, he makes his way through dim corridors to the front study with its brickwork fireplace. Rolling up a copy of the Maine Herald, he grabs some curiously long matches and sets the tinder alight. The embryonic fire soon becomes, as described in the novel's opening chapter, "an orangey ember-cavern that resembles a monster's sloppy mouth, filled with half-chewed, glowing bits of fire-meat".

The Fermata
Nicholson Baker
1995 at Max's House
Synopsis
Arno Strine, a modest temporary typist has perfected the knack of stopping time in its tracks and taking women's clothes off. He is hard at work on his autobiography, The Fermata , which proves in the telling to be a provocative, very funny and altogether morally confused piece of work.
First lines
I am going to call my autobiography The Fermata , even though "fermata" is only one of the many names I have for the Fold. "Fold" is, obviously, another. Every so often, usually in the fall (perhaps mundanely because my hormone-flows are at their highest then), I discover that I have the power to drop into the fold. A Fold-drop is a period of time of variable length during which I am alive and ambulatory and thinking and looking, while the rest of the world is stopped, or paused.
What other people thought
The book is bursting with sex and beauty, wound together profoundly and pornographically. It is bountifully Rabelaisian and intensely refined ... I have never read anything quite like it ... Misogynists will definitely not like

SAA Council's Response to Nicholson Baker's Double Fold
In the May/June 2001 issue of Archival Outlook , Richard Cox has provided an excellent overview of Nicholson Baker's book, Double Fold . Council agrees with the overall tone of Richard Cox's overview and response, and especially endorses the following major points:
  • Baker's conclusions are based on a flawed analysis. The fundamental weakness of Baker's argument is his belief, more implicit than explicit, that everything can and must be saved in its original state. Archivists know that our responsibility to society and our employing institutions is to be selective about what is saved. To keep both the originals and copies, as Baker suggests, is not possible due to the competing priorities and limited resources facing every library and archives. Baker's conspiratorial view of the library community's campaign to convey the urgency of preservation needs to the public, along with the implication that the campaign contained lies and concealed evidence of misdeeds, is entirely unfounded.

Introduction
This essay is a preliminary effort to assess the implications of Nicholson Baker's new book on library preservation. I consider it a work in progress, for three reasons. First, Baker's tome requires detailed responses from many sectors of the library, archives, and preservation communities, as I describe in the review below. It also requires careful and calculated responses since it is a serious work attracting broad media attention. For one thing, Double Fold , unlike his previous New Yorker articles, provides detailed annotation and documentation that needs to be carefully analyzed. Second, this review is being offered

ABOUT THE BOOK
In addition to being celebrated as a prose miniaturist for such works as The Mezzanine and Room Temperature, Baker is widely viewed as a best-selling highbrow eroticist for Vox and The Fermata. In Understanding Nicholson Baker , Arthur Saltzman engages these provocative fictions as well as Baker's renowned nonfiction to show how his seemingly disparate works derive from and demonstrate an unremitting zeal for explicit detail, along with descriptive obsessiveness and linguistic virtuosity. The Everlasting Story of Nory Vox and The Fermata, maintaining that the intricately detailed passions of these erotic novels are in accord with the intricate detail in The Mezzanine and Room Temperature.

http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0203/baker/
Nicholson Baker, renowned for his novels Vox and The Fermata , is one of our most consistently risk-taking authors. A highly accomplished literary experimentalist with a delicious wit, he can riff on just about anything. Long before "Seinfeld" became a hit TV show about nothing, Baker was writing dazzling books about, well, not much at all. By plumbing the minutiae of everyday life, often in the literary equivalent of real-time, Baker's micro-realism creates imaginary worlds that delight the reader. He creates art out of literary digressions. A Box of Matches is Nicholson Baker's latest novel and continues his search to celebrate life and find beauty in the everyday. Emmett, a middle-aged editor of medical textbooks, gets out of bed each morning at 4am and slips quietly down the stairs so as not to wake his wife and two children. Without turning on the lights, he brews himself a cup of coffee and carefully carries it to his living room where he completes his eccentric little ritual by picking up a box of matches and lighting a fire in his fireplace. What he reflects upon while the rest of the world is fast asleep is the subject of this quirky and delightful book from one of our most original contemporary authors. A Box of Matches is the perfect book to read on a blustery winter day while sitting in a cozy armchair by a fire.

"In some cases, they're better ." Erudite and logical, not unlike the man who delivers them, the previews were originally Brogan's idea, and he began giving them as soon as he was installed in 1998. Last week, the preview took a turn. During the question-and-answer session, someone said, "I have a personal question. I heard a rumor that you're leaving. Where are you going?" More to the point, someone else indignantly called out, "How could you?" Brogan is returning to New York, the city from whence he came, where he will head up Nextbook, a national initiative to promote Jewish literacy. As SAL's executive director, he's been ultimately responsible for maintaining and developing all fundraising, programming, and educational outreach efforts. Under his leadership and in spite of the economy, SAL has expanded (the organization used to run two programs; it now runs five) and prospered (the budget when he began was $448,000; it's now $842,000). A capable literary curator and chief administrator, Brogan is quiet, confident, cautious, by his own definition "bad" with people, serious, and often the source of his own amusement. (When he learned I was writing about him, he challenged me, jokingly, to incorporate the term "Svengali-like.") He's also a poet and a father, though he says, "I have to be alone to write poems, and I have a three-year-old. I'm never alone." Two summers ago, in his free time, he reread

" Essentially, then, Baker suggests that every publisher send the Library of Congress a copy of everything it produces, that LC catalog all of it, and never throw it away. Why? Is it true that everything is worth saving? Probably not. A great many books are not worthwhile. They are junk the moment they come off the press. They are junk today, junk tomorrow, junk forever. "
Uncle Frank's March essay ). If the AFA and the AAP take a break, that doesn't mean rest for the wicked: It means that Nicholson Baker has his sharp pen unsheathed, and is going after some librarian hide.
Think of it: My sister-in-law once said of my work, "That must be a restful profession." Oh, yes. We librarians read French novels and sip Michigan wine, and recite aphorisms of the Enlightenment. We'd sip French wine to go with the novels and the aphorisms, but we can't afford it. Said sister-in-law will soon find out just how restful is the wonderful world of the library worker: She herself is putting the final touches on her library degree at Indiana University. I fear that this may somehow be my fault, but am afraid to ask.

In some cases we do subscribe, film and discard. The University Archives has taken the responsibility for preserving the originals of a number of these titles. We are carefully reviewing our policy to retain or discard microfilmed newspapers and are opting to preserve original print copies of all titles not retained by the University Archives at this time. The decision to retain or discard is influenced by a variety of factors, including whether the item is retained elsewhere, the projected usage patterns, the relative artifactual importance of original format, and the successfulness of the microfilm in truthfully representing the original. Mass Deacidification Joins the Preservation Toolbox In a sidebar critique centered on the Library of Congress, Baker identifies a number of problematic effects that the use of the volatile chemical diethyl zinc had on early attempts to develop a process for the deacidification of collections of books and paper en masse. I invariably feel lucid and pleased with life after a shower anyway (there is an illusion of mental acuity that accompanies a thoroughly moistened and rejuvenated sinus-system and the sensation of wet hair-ends on the base of the neck), but seldom more pleased with life than when I can go directly from the tiley shower out to a clean warm sunlit beach towel on the lawn. I took off my watch and my glasses and set them on the edge of the towel, next to the Fieldcrest label; I took off my T-shirt and laid it gently over the portable phone, lying nestled in the grass, to keep it from overheating. I extended myself stomach-down on the towel (a blue-and-white- striped towel; the blue stripes were detectably warmer than the white ones) and let the weight on my ribcage produce a moan of utter contentment.
