The Black Arts Movement was the creative companion to the Black Power Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Like the first renaissance centered in Harlem, it was a time of explosive and energetic artistic expression. BEGINNINGS The revolutionary artwork of this era is rooted in the subtle and sublime work of Gwendolyn Brooks. Brooks broke ground as a gifted young novelist and poet. As a mature writer, she brought along young writers like Hakimahtabuti (Don Lee) and helped solidify African-American publishing efforts like Broadside Press and Third World Press. Sandy Adell (Professor of Afro-American Studies, University of Wisconsin) says Brooks was well suited to nurture the movement because of her literary and community. "She was a one of America's great poets, the first Black person to ever win the Pulitzer Prize." In addition to her literary strengths, Adell points out that Brooks’ leadership is also due to her being a ‘True role model and a genuine person." Professor Sandy Adell on Gwendolyn Brooks

Machines (as Norbert Weiner said) are an extension of their inventor-creators. That is not simple once you think. Machines, the entire technology of the West, is just that, the technology of the West. Nothing has cd shaped Political power is also Think of yourself, Black creator, freed of european restraint which first means the restraint of self determined mind development. Think what would be the results of the unfettered blood inventor-creator with the resources of a nation behind him. How do you communicate with the great masses of Black people? How do you use the earth to feed masses of people? How do you cure illness? How do you prevent illness? What are the Black purposes of space travel? It staggers the mind. To be free go let the mind do what it will as constructive progress force, availed of the total knowledge resource energy of a nation. if you will itself A typewriter is corny!!

    Amiri Baraka
A discussion on Amiri Baraka, one of the most outspoken and respected African-American activist writers. Term Paper #: # of words: # of sources: Format (MLA/APA): MLA Written: Price: Hide: Author: Kirsten Davies
    Abstract
The following paper examines Baraka's life by analyzing four different phases in his life, the beat phase, the transitional period, the black nationalism phase and the third world Marxist period. The writer examines the way in which his novels, plays, essays and poetry have placed him in the forefront of an evolving social movement and a growing body of politically motivating literature.
    From The Paper
"Playwright, author, poet, activist, critic, educator – these are all words that describe Amiri Baraka, a major contemporary author. Baraka was a central figure of the 1960’s Black Arts Movement, which was a literary movement dedicated to the advancement of black art. Although he was bron LeRoy Jones, in 1968, he dropped his western name and adopted the Muslim name of Imamu Amiri Baraka.LeRoy Jones was born in 1934 to African-American parents, and lived the majority of his childhood in a lower middle-class neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey. While his family was better off than most African-Americans at the time, Baraka said that they were not immune to racial violence and discrimination. For example, his grandfather, who was a major influence on him, had his business burned down twice in Alabama before moving to Newark."

  • Quote: My writing reflects my own growth and expansion, and at the same time the society in which I have existed throughout this confrontation. Whether it is politics, music, literature, or the origins of language, there is always a historical and time/place/condition reference that will always try to explain why I was saying both how and for what (Baraka Reader, Preface). Poet, essayist, jazz critic, social critic, dramatist, orator, fiction writer and activist writer all describe the enormous accomplishments of Amiri Baraka, formerly LeRoi Jones, but none of these come close to describing the art and, more importantly, the life of Baraka. Baraka's poetry represents the evolution of a mind that has gone through radical changes in ideological influences, but even in these changes there has been a consistent linear development of discovery and rebellion. It is this development that makes Baraka the person, poet, and activist that he is. [ Click to Order the LeRoi Jones/Amiri Baraka Reader (soft $) ]

It produced and issued the three discs listed above, but recorded much more. The first two items are the target of most serious collectors of Free Jazz, each for a different reason. Sonny's Time Now brought together a fantastic group of free improvisors during the ferment of the "New Thing" of the mid Sixties (Don Cherry-tp; Albert Ayler-ts; Louis Worrell, Henry Grimes-b; Sunny Murray-d; LeRoi Jones [now Imamu Amiri Baraka]-recitation on last track) at a time when their work was causing discussion and argument through-out the jazz world. In many ways Sonny's Time Now may be viewed as a continuation of two classic ESP titles: (ESP 1016) and The New York Art Quartet (ESP 1004).

Amiri Baraka, born Everett LeRoy Jones to Coyt LeRoy and Anna Lois Jones in Newark, New Jersey, grew up in a middle-class environment. He attended a predominantly black elementary school, but his college-prep high school, from which he graduated with honors in 1951, was mainly white. About 1951, the first of his name changes occurred with the spelling of his middle name from “LeRoy” to “LeRoi.” From 1952 to 1954 he attended Howard University, where he studied with Sterling Brown and Nathan Scott. After he flunked out of school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force until 1957. These were years of intellectual commitment and poetry writing. In 1957, however, he was dishonorably discharged because of suspicions of communism and such “suspicious activities” as voracious reading, journal-keeping, poetry writing, and subscribing to avant-garde journals.
Free to live the avant-garde life that had become his preference, Baraka moved to New York’s Greenwich Village. Among his associates there were Charles Olson, Frank O’Hara, and Allen Ginsberg. In 1958 he married Hettie Cohn, a Jewish woman also much a part of the Beat scene, and together they edited
