... Anthony Burgess Interview with Julian Barnes Giving up criticism is much easier than giving up alcohol or tobacco LIDIA VIANU: You belong to a generation of writers who will do anything in their power, form and content (technical and emotional experiment at all costs) to shock, confuse, render the reader helpless. These I have called Desperadoes . Do you feel you relate to the description of the group and to the label? JULIAN BARNES: Well, as I suggested, I'm rather surprised to be called a Desperado. I rather like the description (who wouldn't?) but you make us (if there is an 'us', which I'm sceptical about) sound like a gang led by Clint Eastwood. but who is Clint, and are we a gang? I think we are a very disparate number of rather quiet writers who write rather differently from one another. I certainly think, for my part, that my aim is NOT to do anything in my power to shock, let alone render the reader helpless. I have a very close and affectionate relationship with my putative reader. At times, of course, I like to play with what I suspect s/he knows or expects; I like to render reality in all its confusing complexity; but I in no way think of my readers as either antagonists or victims. That's too easy. My reader sits not opposite me, in any case, but beside me, gazing out at the world in a parallel direction. I merely discuss with my friend the reader what I see and think.

Julian Barnes Biography Julian Barnes is one of the best known English novelists currently writing, part of a select group that includes Martin Amis, Ian McEwan, Graham Swift and Salman Rushdie. Barnes is most often compared with Amis, because the two men were once friends, then enemies. Furthermore, his prose is everything Amis's isn't. Amis is flashy, vulgar, vigorous; Barnes is considered, civilised, meditative. Amis is obsessed with style; Barnes is interested in ideas. Barnes's most successful novels, thus far, have been Flaubert's Parrot and A History of the World in Ten and a Half Chapters . In these books, Barnes exhibits all of his strengths as a novelist. He proves capable of writing movingly about love, history and literature. He is capable of Nabokovian intelligence and Flaubertian elegance. He turns complicated historical and literary concepts into readable, beautifully-constructed fiction. Of course, some critics have felt that, even in these books, Barnes's weaknesses are exposed. Flaubert's Parrot and A History of the World are more like essays than novels. Barnes is too interested in philosophical concepts; he cannot create believable, three-dimensional characters. He is too middlebrow; his novels are devoid of dramatic tension and psychological profundity. However, all in all, it has to be said that these two books ratify Barnes's frequently-made claim that a novel 'should be novel', that he is trying to do something different with plotting and characterisation, he is trying to blend fiction and history, he is trying to confound the conventional expectations of the reader. True, in his other novels, he is less successful.

BN187 Letters from Iceland, Faber 1937 ‘Letters from Iceland’ is regarded as one of the most curious books of all time: a travel book written by two poets, but also a meditation on the history of Europe, the 1930s political crisis, Englishness and the nature of literature. In 1936 Faber and Faber commissioned Auden and MacNeice to travel to Iceland and write an account of their journey. The result is a synthesis of poetry, diary entries, satire and dramatic eclogue, a landmark of world literature that is as innovative and insightful as it is by turns touching, funny, absurd and deeply disorientating. FOLDED IN is an original insert from The Group Theatre. Throughout the 1930s this innovative theatre company commissioned and performed plays by some of the leading writers of the time including first performances of some of the acknowledged masterpieces of twentieth-century literature. Closely involved with the socio-literary engagement of what was later termed “The Auden Generation”, the Group’s plays offer a unique commentary on the cultural and political developments of the time.
