A number of his early works were written collaboratively, some with Larry Niven, and some with Niven and Jerry Pournelle. However, beginning with Streetlethal in 1983, Barnes has written a string of books in which he has blended a lifetime of martial arts practice, independent inquiry, and philosophical and political issues into novels that are often original and always exciting. Recent books have tackled ever more ambitious topics, without relinquishing his early emphasis on action and adventure; Lion's Blood (2002) has been praised by Octavia Butler as "the best book Steve Barnes has ever written," and by National Book Award winner Charles Johnson as "an epic, daring alternative universe novel." Violence, Ethics, and Ethnicity: Charisma by Steven Barnes Reviewed by Greg Beatty S teven Barnes has always been an ambitious writer. However, in his intense early novels, his ambitions were tightly focused. In Streetlethal (1983), Barnes gave us Aubry Knight, the ultimate martial artist, sidetracked from his goal of winning a zero gravity combat title through a series of tense complications. In later works, such as Blood Brothers (1996), Barnes continued to write intense thrillers, but wound in examinations of the meanings of race, family, and heritage. Charisma his most recent novel, raises his thrillers to another level of complexity, and offers in the process Barnes's most direct commentary on all of these subjects. The term "commentary" is a bit threatening, making it sound like Charisma is clogged by chunks of didactic exposition. I hasten to add that just the opposite is true. Barnes opens with a scene in which we follow thirteen year old Tanesha Evans through the streets of contemporary Los Angeles. Barnes not only makes Evans' sheer exuberance come to life with consummate ease, he also shows us L.A. through her eyes, in ways that transform its disintegrating neighborhoods into landscapes of wonder, family, and adventure. By the time Barnes ends this preface with tragic finality, he has created a cluster of mysteries, any one of which would be enough to capture a reader's interest. The next chapter opens with a jump across time, geography, and race, but also with a confident voice honed through decades of writing. I was hooked. I burned through the book's 380 pages that evening, turning every page till the last one, and wishing for more of this contemporary thriller.

Far too many authors believe that tweaking a single historical event is enough to alter known history into something entirely and credibly bizarre. Unfortunately, folks, rarely has a single event or person been responsible for the history of the world as we know it. Further, characters of that world must behave as though they are native to the alternate world, not merely transplanted there from our known reality. Steven Barnes knows that, and thankfully, is willing to put in the time and effort necessary to build his alternate America from scratch. In the world of Lion's Blood , history began to change in the time of Socrates. Certain pivotal events occurred differently, and history continues to grow from there, with not just one historical event differing, but many. For at least the past 30 years, 2001 has been the mythical year of the future. What will be the next mythical year, 2001 now being directly upon us, and why do you choose the year you do? I choose 2050, because the vast majority of people born before WW2 will be dead by that point. The world began to accelerate to incredibly after the introduction of the atomic bomb. I suspect that a major threshold will be crossed when only those who have lived in its shadow still survive. 2. For various reasons people today often seem to assume that human civilization has just a bit longer to run, typically not more than a 100 years or so. On the other hand there is evidence that many ancient people had faith in a much longer-term future for humanity (if not themselves personally). What accounts for this contrast, or if the observation is inaccurate, why do you say this? Send to a friend Printer version Discuss Now Review: 'Charisma' by Steven Barnes By Philip Shropshire, Special to BET.com Posted on Feb. 4, 2003 - The critically acclaimed "Harry Potter" books and "The Lord of the Rings" movies are enjoyable and pack in mass appeal despite the authors' omissions of Black people from their characters and environments. Tolkien can be forgiven. After all, those were the times. But J.K. Rowling? Isn't modern Britain an island full of Indian and Jamaican immigrants as well? Don't tell me Rowling's modern eyes have never seen them, much like Woody Allen has overlooked Blacks and Hispanics in "his" New York for all of these years. Surely, someone can write a good fantasy novel and have people of color play a significant role. Turns out that the ever-prolific author Steven Barnes has already written that good book, it's called "Charisma" (Tor Books, June 2002, $24.95) and, as you might imagine, it's a bit darker than anything that Rowling has ever come up with. Or at least I don't remember private assassins - partial to using hit-and-run techniques on bicycling kids - murderous drug-dealing bikers and gay body builders with a mean streak ever taking a ride on Harry Potter's magic train. Here's a hint of "Charisma's" NC-17 tone: an angry gang of male gay body builders who aren't just content to kick your butt silly. I'll leave it at that.
