John Barth Reads from Unpublished Novel
Novelist John Barth spoke entertainingly from unpublished new work to about 75 people in the Montpelier Room the evening of Nov. 6. His prose was read at breakneck speed in an Eastern Shore accent and punctuated with cardboard signs he held up over his head. "It was a dazzling demonstration of his inventive style, verbal wit and satirically apocalyptic commentary on the end-of-the-century American culture," said Alice L. Birney, American literature manuscript historian in the Manuscript Division. A Maryland native, Mr. Barth is a sailor whose enjoyment of the Chesapeake Bay is often a theme in his work. Introducing him, Prosser Gifford, director of the Office of Scholarly Programs, which sponsored the program, said: "The shallow southeastern Chesapeake is ringed by swamps, bogs, fens and marshes, and these play through John Barth's writing as musical strands through a symphony." He noted Mr. Barth's "exuberant proliferation of the options of every day." The title of the reading was "

In new novel, Barth is still wrestling
    By WILLIAM J. COBB
COMING SOON! By John Barth. Houghton Mifflin, $26. THE 1993 film Wrestling Ernest Hemingway describes a pair of macho old cusses, one of whom supposedly wrestled Hemingway himself. In an odd way John Barth's latest book, his first novel in 10 years, playfully and metaphorically enacts the same scenario, only with his particular postmodern twist. In many respects Barth's approach is the antithesis of Hemingway's straightforward, no-nonsense style. Endlessly self-reflexive, and concerned much more with the hows and whys of literature than the whats, Barth has for 45 years been one of the mainstays of high postmodernism in American fiction. Linked with the likes of Donald Barthelme, Robert Coover and John Hawkes in his heyday of the 1960s and '70s, Barth faded from the spotlight with the advent of Raymond Carver's Dirty Realism of the '80s. Subsequent trends placed more emphasis on the subject of the novel, the primacy of story over parody and stylistic high jinks.

    Its opening mini-icon:
READ ME Call me ditsy, call me whatchadurn please; just an old-fart Chesapeake progger’s what I am, with more orneriness than good sense — else I wouldn’t be sitting here a-hunting and a-pecking on "Big Bitsy’s" ergonomic keyboard whilst the black wind roars and the black water rises and the power flickers and the cabin shakes. I’d’ve hauled my bony butt across Backwater Strait to high ground over in Crassfield whilst the hauling was still doable, before the storm-surge from Zulu Two (stay tuned) puts Hick Fen Island* eight fingerforking feet under Backwater Sound. "Whoa ho there, Dits," my mind’s ear hears the gentle reader gently interpose: "Where’s Hick Fen I.? Where’re Backwater Sound and ditto Strait and mainland Crassfield? Who’s Zulu Two, and whaddafug’s a progger, and who’s thissere EARL character, that you haven’t even mentioned yet?"

    Barth, John
Once upon a time, Barth was the hippest writer in America. Nowadays many consider his concerns with the mythical story cycle and the mechanics of storytelling relics from the '60s.While college students still read stories from Lost in the Funhouse in literature classes, his works do not seem to maintain the same kind of cultural resonance as, say, those of Thomas Pynchon or Don DeLillo . It doesn't help that Barth's novels are almost entirely unfilmable, rarely touch on current affairs, and don't trek in self-pity or ingratiating sarcasm or apocalyptic pessimism. He is one of the most influential authors of the second half of the twentieth century. Because I have found surprisingly little published on the Web about him and his works. And because, despite all his literary pyrotechnics, he remains one of the best simple story-tellers alive today. (It's also a nice excuse to post some reviews and an interview with Barth I conducted in 1992 to promote his Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor.) John Barth remains an extraordinary influence in American letters.
