Barthelme, Donald The President
Genre Short Story (3 pp. in alternate source) Keywords Disability Society Summary The new U.S. President is tiny, strange, and apparently brilliant. Somehow the people believe that he will identify problems and find solutions. People are fainting. No one seems to know what is going on. No one thought such a tiny man could be elected President, but he won in a landslide. The society seems to believe the President can do great things; but no one seems to have any idea what those might be. Meanwhile, people keep fainting. Commentary Barthelme often takes an abnormal situation and presents it as if it were an everyday occurrence (like all the pets, plants, some relatives and even some classmates dying in an elementary school class in his story "The School"). Barthelme keeps his readers unbalanced, not sure of what is going on in the story. In this case he portrays a contemporary America, where people vote without knowing why, where they hope (even expect) that their President will be some kind of savior who will save them from not knowing what they want or don't want. Readers are baffled by the strangeness of the public's aimless malaise and its frantic applause of its weird leader, as if the community could no longer take any responsibility and abdicated everything to this charismatic man. Barthelme forces us to face ambiguity and uncertainty; and also how irresponsible we are as democratic citizens who don't work at it.

What I'd like to do is follow work by Donald Barthelme through its exchange between writer and editor. The question is whether you think proper documentation exists that would make this possible. At the very least I would need access to manuscripts and correspondence about the work. Ideally I'd focus on the exchange between Barthelme and a single editor. I edit the lit journal 3rd bed, and the point of the project is to understand through obsessive research the process of choice that occurs when a writer negotiates with an editor, which will, hopefully, sharpen my own editorial instinct. Donald Barthelme's writing is important to me and his work has influenced the sensibility of 3rd bed. I hope the gist of this is clear and that it gives you reason to respond. : Yours

The Eclectic Odyssey of Atlee B. Ayres, Architect
by Robert James Coote
Color photographs by W. Eugene George
Atlee B. Ayres was one of the most prominent Texas architects of the early twentieth century. In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ayres was involved in more than five hundred architectural projects, principally in San Antonio and South Texas, but also in Kansas, Oklahoma, and New York. His architectural successes include distinguished public buildings such as San Antonio's first skyscraper, the Smith Young Tower; private homes; businesses and churches; and five buildings on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. However, it was in the houses he designed that the influences of the refined eclecticism for which Ayres became known are most evident. In The Eclectic Odyssey of Atlee B. Ayres, Architect, Robert James Coote focuses on Ayres's early-twentieth-century residential architecture and the sources from which he drew inspiration. During the three decades Coote examines, Ayres designed nearly two hundred homes in the fashionable San Antonio suburbs of Monte Vista, Olmos Park, and Terrell Hills-homes that even now rank among the most charming in the area. Ayres's eclectic search for inspiration and guidance from buildings of many times and places, American and European, provides a window on the issue of style-an issue that continues to interest those who design houses as well as those who experience them. Coote studies in detail twenty-five of Ayres's houses, not only as representatives of styles, but also as architectural compositions- their plans, spaces, exteriors, materials, and structure.
