Georges Bataille
Slow Death by Leng-Tch'e (cutting into pieces):
There is true ecstasy in this expression.
Biographical Notes
Georges Bataille was born on 10 September 1897 in Billon, Puy-de-Dome, in central France. His father suffered from general paralysis, brought on by syphilis. He was, according to Bataille , already blind when Georges was conceived. His mother was also of dubious sanity. Family moves to Rheims in 1900. Bataille converts to Catholicism around the time of his baccaulaureate, just before the outbreak of the War in 1914. He and his mother evacuate the city, which was under the German advance, abandoning his father, who was too far gone to be easily transported. His father dies raving, ranting and refusing to see a priest, on 6 November 1915. These events have a powerful effect on Bataille.
But the weirdest thing was certainly the way he looked while pissing. Since he could not see anything, his pupils very frequently pointed up into space, shifting under the lids, and this happened particularly when he pissed. Furthermore, he had huge, ever gaping eyes that flanked an eagle nose, and those huge eyes went almost entirely blank when he pissed, with a completely stupefying expression of abandon and aberration in a world that he alone could see and that aroused his vaguely sardonic and absent laugh.... In any case, the image of those white

Story of the Eye by Lord Auch Eroticism , for example, Bataille emphasises how the erotic is fundamentally a violation of the pure self; it is thus (unconsciously) linked with death. Similarly, in The Tears of Eros Bataille argues that the history of art shows that art has always been linked to horror. This is why it originated in caves, such as those discovered at Lascaux in France. Second Surrealist Manifesto Whether or not Bataille remained on the edge of insanity for much of his life - whether or not he was obsessed by horror and death - he has left an oeuvre which, it is now generally agreed, is of great theoretical profundity and intensity. For Bataille was indeed able to theorise the central themes of his obsessions; he was also able to bring his training in numismatics to bear in his intellectual enterprises - one of these being the creation of the ethnographic and art journal, Documents Critique Critique presented the early work of Blanchot, Barthes, Foucault and Derrida to a wider audience.

    76. Bataille, Bunuel & The Decay Of Vision In Surrealism: Georges Bataille, Andres B

    http://www.utexas.edu/depts/grg/ustudent/gcraft/fall97/brown/essays/bataille.htm
by Daniel Brown Photography was especially crucial to the Surrealists' reshaping of vision because of film's direct contact with the outside world. This access to nature allowed the manipulations of the photograph to appear as presentations of reality; thus conventional notions of surrealist imagery that were based solely on the imagination and entirely independent of external reality where called into question (Jay 188). Even Breton acknowledged photography by including photos in his texts Nadja and Mad Love, as well as crediting photography with undermining realist painting in "What is Surrealism?". Photos like Man Ray's Minotaure, with the headless body, came to be associated with Bataille, who urged for a community where "man has escaped from his head just as the condemned man has escaped from prison", on which I will probe later in this essay. While attempting to question the reliability of vision, Breton would at the same time exult in it. Placing painting above music, Breton pretentiously declared that "auditive images, in fact, are inferior to visual images not only in clearness but also in strictness, and with all due respect to a few melomaniacs [passionate lovers of music], they hardly seem intended to strengthen in any way the idea of human greatness. so may night continue to fall upon the orchestra, and may I, who am still searching for something in this world, may I be left with open or closed eyes, in broad daylight, to my silent contemplation (Breton 1-2)". The idea of "human greatness" and the visual is closely tied with Freudian ideology, which will also be brought in later .

I believe that truth has only one face: that of a violent contradiction. Crime is a fact of the human species, a fact of that species alone, but it is above all the secret aspect, impenetrable and hidden. Crime hides, and by far the most terrifying things are those which elude us. Life has always taken place in a tumult without apparent cohesion, but it only finds its grandeur and its reality in ecstasy and in ecstatic love. Eroticism is assenting to life even in death. To place oneself in the position of God is painful: being God is equivalent to being tortured. For being God means that one is in harmony with all that is, including the worst. The existence of the worst evils is unimaginable unless God willed them. A judgment about life has no meaning except the truth of the one who speaks last, and the mind is at ease only at the moment when everyone is shouting at once and no one can hear a thing. The essence of morality is a questioning about morality; and the decisive move of human life is to use ceaselessly all light to look for the origin of the opposition between good and evil.
