Some of the identified non-family writers are Katherine Lee Bates, Madge A. Bigham, Frankie McKee, actress Lucille Watson, pianist Katherine Heyman, scholar Katherine Balderston, college friend Margaret "Babbie" Babcock Meriwether, and novelist Ida A. R. Wylie. Actress Mary Morris is represented by a copy of a poem. The following original letters to Tracy Angas are also included:

Record Group 98 Katherine Tracy L'Engle was born in Atlanta on May 19, 1892, the daughter of Camille Saunders and Carrie Hubbard L'Engle. Although Georgian by birth, her ancestral home was Jacksonville and her family had only recently moved from there on account of her father's business. As a child, she also lived in New York City. Among other schools, Tracy attended Rogers Hall in Lowell, Massachusetts. She was graduated from Wellesley College in 1915. Following graduation, she pursued a career as an actress. This was interrupted in 1918 - 1919 by a tour of volunteer duty as a YMCA canteen operator for the American Expeditionary Force in France and the occupation army in Germany. Later she followed a variety of careers, acting radio broadcasting from New York and Jacksonville, encyclopedia editing, writing, directing amateur theater in Jacksonville, lecturing on fashion and giving dramatic readings. She lived variously in New York, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine. In 1955, Tracy married William Mack Angas, whom she had known in Jacksonville in her youth. Angas was a retired U.S. Navy vice-admiral and the civil engineering chairman at Princeton University. The couple had been involved in a courtship years before. The Angas' lived in Princeton until the professor's death in 1960. Mrs. Angas apparently lived the remainder of her life in Jacksonville. The autobiography and the memoir, found in the Papers, are two first hand sources, but not entirely accurate, for information on Tracy Angas.

O Beautiful For Spacious Skies Katharine Lee Bates was born on August 12, 1859 in Falmouth, Massachusetts to William and Cornelia Frances Lee Bates. Her father was a pastor at the First Congregational Church. "Katie" was the fifth child of the Bates family. Katharine Lee Bates received a bachelor of arts degree in 1880 from Wellesley College in Massachusetts. She returned to the school in 1886 to join the faculty and served as the chair of the English department. On July 22, 1893, Bates climbed 14,000 feet to the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado, and found the inspiration for her poem "America The Beautiful."
Katharine Lee Bates The Author
In addition to her volumes of poetry, Bates authored several travel books, and published her research on the history of American literature. She wrote many poems about her beloved home town. Bates also wrote the critically acclaimed children's book "Sigurd: Our Golden Collie." The publication of "Yellow Clover" is frequently omitted from her biographical profiles in history books and encyclopedias.

We have experienced much in the past year that gave renewed focus to what it means to be independent in our country. Patriotic expressions are more pronounced in our everyday activities. The American flag is much more visible in our community. Keeping the spirit of our independence throughout the year is possible with patriotic music. The National Association for Music Education web site features teaching suggestions for studying of patriotic music. Suggestions include playing patriotic music in reception areas of buildings, in the sound systems of schools, government offices, in stores or on phone system hold lines. In 1893, Katherine Lee Bates, a Massachusetts author and teacher, was so inspired by the view from atop Pikes Peak that she composed the lyrics to "America the Beautiful." Katharine Lee Bates: Biographical Notes.
The following information was taken from a newspaper article (no paper or date given in reference) Contributed by Robert Fitzpatrick America the Beautiful first appeared In print in The Congregationalist , a weekly journal, on July 4, 1895. Over the years, It has become the country's unofficial second national anthem. Miss Bates, long-time professor at Wellesley College, couldn't have known that those four stanzas, hastily scribbled into a notebook on a trip West in 1893, would attain such fame. Atop Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colo., she was electrified by the beauty that was her country, and In writing what later became America the Beautiful , passed on that intense love for her country to all Americans. Miss Bates, who was lecturing at the summer session at Colorado College, joined an expedition to the summit of Pikes Peak In a prairie wagon. She wrote, "It was then and there, as I was looking out over the sea-like expanse..." She rewrote some sections, and the new version was published In The Boston Evening Transcript The only payment Miss Bates ever received for her efforts was a small check from The Congregationalist when America the Beautiful was first published.
