BEAGLE (Review by Nick Gevers, Ph.D., Cape Town, South Africa) A Fine and Private Place (1960), the seminal and self-analytical The Last Unicorn (1968), and (1993), which lends a near-unique depth and sensitivity to the materials of full-blown High Fantasy. In the 1990s, leaving behind his oddly disappointing screenwriting (see, or do not see, The Lord of the Rings ) and what seem to have been sundry bohemian distractions, Beagle has become (mildly) prolific at last: in addition to , he has produced the novel The Unicorn Sonat a (1996) and two collections, The Rhinoceros Who Quoted Nietzsche (1997) and Giant Bones . The last is superb. Giant Bones is a cycle of six novellas occurring in the imaginary world first explored in the magisterial Giant Bones , this reconciliation of elements proceeds impressively. Each story centers on people of low rank in the kingdoms and hierarchies of their nameless world; they struggle simply to be true to themselves, avoiding steadfastly any offers of preferment, any Rings or Swords of Power that might corrupt their integrity or creative independence. Like Giant Bones is told for the most part as oral narrative, in a succession of idiosyncratic and irascible first-person voices, some loud, some quiet, but all urgent with stories for which kings and great magicians would have no ear. Acting in this spirit, Beagle in this collection does for High Fantasy what Dan Simmons did for Science Fiction in

cover art by Gervasio Gallardo (right) From the back cover of 1989 paperback (cover not shown):
The Last Unicorn is the story of a quest, the search by the unicorn - immortal, infinitely beautiful - for her lost fellows. She is assisted in her mission by Schmendrick the Magician, a kind of poor man's Merlin, whose devotion to the exquisite creature he follows is exceeded only by his mediocrity in magic. A third traveler, fiercely loyal Molly Grue, tries to bring some semblance of order and practicality into the lives of her two mad charges in this wonderfully imaginative and touching tale.
Read for group discussion on August 8, 2001 Amy's Summary: Peter S. Beagle - The Last Unicorn
An immortal unicorn leaves her grove, seeking others of her kind. So few people have seen an unicorn, many think her merely a pretty white mare. A butterfly says the other unicorns passed by a long time ago, with The Red Bull close behind them.

Mr. Beagle is a fabulous writer, "The Last Unicorn" being one of his most famous works. The story is basically about the travels of the innocent unicorn to find the rest of her kind. Along the way, she is befriended by Schmendrick, a magician who is failing at his craft, and Molly Grue, a bold woman who understands the ways of the unicorn as well as the rest of the world.
The story itself is full of detail; Beagle takes care in presenting the character's emotions and actions. Also, the book contains a great deal of philisophy, which makes "The Last Unicorn" all the more enchanting.
I recommend "The Last Unicorn" to anyone who enjoys a story written in a beautiful usage of language, or to the people who simply love getting absorbed in a good book. Submitted by Amy (4. Dec 2000)

Peter S. Beagel Das letzte Einhorn

Peter S. Beagle,
A Dance for Emilia
(Roc/Penguin, 2000)
American fantasy writer Peter S. Beagle has only published six books in the last 30-odd years, yet each was a gem, and two The Last Unicorn and A Fine and Private Place are considered bonafide classics of fantastic fiction. His most recent (after 1999's Tamsin ) returns to the "gentle" ghost story form of A Fine and Private Place and is a sweet and poignant examination of dreams and the afterlife set in contemporary Manhattan. The story is narrated by Jake Holtz, a "working stiff" actor (nobody famous) who is confronted with the profound when the spirit of his recently deceased best friend failed dancer turned art critic Sam Kagan possesses the body of his female Abyssinian cat Millamont. When the cat suddenly starts performing leaps, twirls and acrobatic antics once impossible for Sam's less supple human body and starts "speaking" in a sort of telepathic voice, Jake and Emilia Rossi (a New Jersey newspaper reporter and Sam's most recent lover) are convinced that the power of their combined grief and love has proved strong enough to bring Sam back to them in Millamont's body. Yet, despite the human presence in the cat body, Sam/Millamont retains very amusing feline behaviors! Jake's narrative voice smoothly transitions from past to present as flashbacks recall Jake's friendship with Sam, the two of them sharing a passion for the performing arts and an understanding of the struggle to make dreams come true. With concision and lyrical grace, Jake's prose conveys a welter of convincing detail about the minutiae of adult life and feelings as the two friends pursued demanding careers on opposite coasts Sam writing for arts magazines and Jake taking acting jobs wherever he can, mostly in California, sometimes in New York and elsewhere yet their relationship stayed closer than ever. When Sam's unexpected death leaves Jake and Emilia devastated, their shared mourning and love for Sam forges the bond of a new friendship, and since Emilia inherited Millamont, Sam's cat the miracle of Sam returning to "haunt" the feline's body somehow seems inevitable. But some miracles do not last forever, or do they?

Peter S. Beagle,
Tamsin
(Roc, 1999)
Peter S. Beagle's new novel, Tamsin , is a ghost story, a love story and a coming-of-age story rolled into one. Jenny Gluckstein is a street-smart and smartmouthed 13-year-old living on West 83rd Street in Manhattan when her mother, Sally, tells her that she is getting married to her boyfriend Evan McHugh. That's not all they're going to move back to England, where they will be joined by Evan's two sons, Tony, 16, and Julian, 10. Jenny is not happy, to say the least, but then she finds out that they will not be living in London; rather, Evan has just gotten a job restoring and managing a Stourhead Farm, in Dorset. After that, Jenny manages to make life miserable for everyone concerned. There are limits to that, however, and Jenny finds herself drawn into life on the Dorset farm. Not only is there the daily routine on the farm, but Jenny finds that the folklore creatures Evan has told them about really seem to exist: she hears strange whispers, footfalls and, on some nights, wild shrieks as if a pack of wild creatures were pursuing their prey across the sky. Then Mister Cat gets out of quarantine, and it is he who eventually leads her to discover Tamsin. Tamsin is the ghost of Tamsin Willoughby, the daughter of the farm's first owner, Roger Willoughby. Dead at the age of 20, she has waited for over 300 years, accompanied by the ghost of her Persian cat, Miss Sophia Brown, unable to remember why she can not move beyond her ghostly state. She and Jenny become friends, and Jenny finds herself involved in Tamsin's plight.

- November 16, 2002 Peter S. Beagle is one of those authors who is somehow both well-known and almost unknown at the same time. He has a remarkably charming writing style, and his stories have the sincerity of children's books, but with a slightly disturbing, bittersweet flavor to them. A wonderful introduction to his work is the short story "Come, Lady Death," which you can find in the highly-recommended The Fantasy Worlds of Peter S. Beagle , among other places. Even if your library doesn't carry The Fantasy Worlds of Peter S. Beagle , I think you'll find it easy to order it through an interlibrary loan. Online booksellers also carry some of his books, although this particular one is out of print. Both Amazon.com

Beagle, Peter S. Come Lady Death
Genre Short Story (17 pp.) Keywords Aging Death and Dying Depression Suicide Summary England in the 18th century. The wealthy Lady Neville finds that she has become sad and bored with life. So she arranges an elaborate ball and decides to invite Death as the guest of honor. To be invited, Death must first be found. After discussion about whether Death lives among the rich or the poor, Lady Neville remembers that her hairdresser's child is dying, so she gives him the invitation to pass on when death arrives. Two days later the heartbroken hairdresser arrives with a note of acceptance. All agree that Death's handwriting looks feminine, but when the hairdresser will not describe the source of the note, Lady Neville has him whipped and thrown out. At the ball, the guests become increasingly fearful until Death arrives, late, in the form of a beautiful young woman. Everyone falls in love with her. When she says she has to leave, they beg her to stay, and she says she will, if they're sure. They are, so she says that she must now choose someone to take her place as immortal Death.
