The Idea Man
by Steve Beai
Crespo Ward realized his dream as it converged on the cusp of his nightmares. By asking around, the retirement party long since over, that tedious dance of shaking hands with well-wishers who wished him everything but, Crespo was able to call in a few favors that led him to the house where he hoped to spend his life doing what he loved most of all.
The house was a good hour from Framingham, over bumpy rural stretches of narrow road, through a sunburst of changing leaves over the New England countryside, heralding the coming winter. A few wrong turns and frustrated glances at the outdated road map he had bought back at the Sunoco station in Framingham later, and he was pulling up the hard-packed dirt driveway, the U-Haul creaking painfully behind the Escort wagon.
The grounds were somewhat overgrown, but manageable enough, Crespo reasoned, thanks to the early frosts which had stunted growth on the foliage. There was a gazebo off to one side of the house, its ornate sides a trellis for the creeping vines, now brown and dormant. As the car bounced down the lane, bringing the gazebo into view, Crespo imagined himself sitting in there, feet up, surrounded by silence, paper draped over his stomach and enjoying the last few warmer days of late fall. When the work was done, of course.

BIO
"The darkness waited for the better part of thirteen years before finally showing itself. The darkness inside of me."
from the nonfiction essay, "Friday, May 20, 1994" appearing in the anthology PERSONAL DEMONS
In February of 1970 at the age of seven, Steve Beai was presented with issue #62 of Famous Monsters of Filmland by his grandfather, Deno Libei. He credits that single experience as the catalyst which set him on the path he has followed for over thirty years. An enthusiastic fan of monsters and horror from an early age, the magazine provided a road map for Beai, an only child who says he never quite mastered the art of "fitting in", letting him know he was not alone in his unusual interests. Through his high school years, he enlisted the aid of several classmates turned "reporters" and edited a crudely constructed horror fan magazine called "Fantasy Journal" which he sold to the student body for fifty-cents a copy until the Principal closed the "unauthorized" magazine down and gave Steve his first taste of censorship. In the ensuing years, Steve pursued his creative vision as a professional drummer, dropping out of college after one year to hit the road with touring punk bands which included "The YardApes", "The Gear", and "Intermission." During this time, he dabbled in songwriting, still searching for his individual voice in the creative cosmos. "While other people listened to the music and wrote about the music, I was in the middle of it, earning my rent and food money for bashing the drums. The punk movement in America was irresistible because it was so receptive to new music and easy enough to make a decent living at the time if you were willing to travel. You could stay outside the established industry and get along as well as a lot of the signed bands."

It's a book that has received an exellent reaction throughout the horror genre, resulting in Steve recently being signed by eminent US publisher Broken Tree Books. This is Paul Kane's exclusive interview with Steve which took place a few weeks ago.
Paul Kane: How did you get into writing in the first place and what made you choose the horror genre?
Steve Beai:
PK: Have you ever worked in any other styles (e.g. traditional horror) or genres (such as sf or fantasy)?
SB: I tend to shy away from strict labeling. I've written pieces which could be considered science fiction, or straight literary I try to put as much variety into my work as possible. However, without exception, all of my work has a dark edge to it owing to whatever lurks in my psyche, I imagine.
PK: You mention your family in the acknowledgments of Widow's Walk, indeed the book is dedicated to your mother, Paulette Jo; how supportive have they been in your chosen career over the years?

Interview with:
Troy Brownfield
To say that I've made some interesting friends over the years would be a serious understatement. One of the funnier people that I've ever met is Steve Beai. When I met Steve, he was playing drums with my good friend Blind Jimmy Blues. Steve, James, site designer Shawn and I spent many evenings in the Coffee Grounds in Terre Haute prior to my finishing grad school and moving to Indy. As fate would have it, Steve's done some pretty cool things since. And even though he still runs Reservoir Studio, Steve's success has come from writing. In fact, Steve's novel, Widow's Walk, was a Bram Stoker Award Finalist this year. That's an amazing feat in the field of horror fiction. Steve has published over a 100 other short stories and articles, and his book on censorship, Censoring the Censors, was very well-received. So, this famous pal of Shawn and I has dropped by to answer some questions and basically explain himself. Kids, Steve Beai...

Troy Brownfield
Usually in the Big Question, we have guests from the realm of comics. Notable exceptions are author Steve Beai, Jeph Loeb (who has an awesome comics career but also writes films) and icon Julie Strain. However, this time I’m pleased to announce that we have secured our first interview with a film director. At this point, I’ll admit that I’ve been very excited to have this guest. One of my sentimental favorite films from my teen years is The Monster Squad, and this gentlemen co-created and directed that film! He’s also the man behind Night of the Creeps, Robocop 3, and quite a bit more, as you’ll see. Before we begin, I do have to note one funny thing. Fred actually came to our site via my big Best Horror Movies of all time article (wherein I named Monster Squad as a favorite). He wrote me a very nice email, agreeing with some picks and really giving it to me over some others. Needless to say, I was flattered that he took the time, and I’m very pleased that he agreed to be interviewed here. Ladies and gentlemen, Fred Dekker!
