Both novels are about human evolution and are published by Del Rey and HarperCollins UK. BEAR, GREG
The Way novels
(Eon, Eternity, Legacy)
Eon
Eon starts out in the near future with the arrival of a large asteroid that enters Earth orbit. The authorities on Earth, and the Western Bloc in particular, immediately start exploring this asteriod, simply dubbed "the Stone", as it is obviously an artifact made by intelligent beings. The Soviet Union still exists in this novel, which made me a little annoyed at first, but it soon turned out that this little slip had a neat (possible) explanation. There are several main characters, some of whom are not very interesting or even wholesome.
This novel starts out slowly, but gathers speed a few hundred pages in. The secret of "the Stone" is of truly mindboggling proportions, but as is so often the case with popular SF writers, the characters are dull and the sub-plots are absent or not well explored. I think this is a main difference between most Fantasy and SF authors. Science Fiction writers concentrate on an idea or concept, while Fantasy novels are mostly centered around a group of people and their struggles.
But I digress. A bizarre and extremely advanced race of future humans is discovered in an extra-dimensional part of "the Stone", called "the Way". Some of the human explorers aboard "the Stone" flee into "the Way" as the Earth below them is consumed by nuclear fires. I found the inhabitants of "the Way" abhorrent and bizarre to the point of disturbing. I will not reveal more for fear of ruining the experience.

A Conversation With Greg Bear
By Greg Knollenberg Greg Bear is one of modern science fiction's great writers. His books are known for their cutting-edge hard science, rich characterization and vivid illustration of the impact science and technology have on our society. He is the author of twenty-four books, which have been translated into a dozen languages. He has won four Nebulas and two Hugos for his fiction. He began writing when he was very young, and was first published in Robert Lowndes' Famous Science Fiction when he was only fifteen years old. It took him five years to get his next short story published, but he was being published on a regular basis by age 23. The first novel Bear sold, Hegira (Dell), appeared in 1979. His novel, Moving Mars (Tor, 1993), won the 1994 Nebula Award for best novel. Recent novels by Greg Bear include:

35. Revista Gigamesh - Crítica De Libros - Fundación Y Caos, De Greg Bear
Crtica a esta obra de greg bear, por Ram³n Pe±a.
http://www.gigamesh.com/criticalibros/fundacionycaos.html

The Hallway The Library The Gallery The Music Room ... The Links "Darwin's Radio", Greg Bear HarperCollins, UK paperback, 2000 (© 1999), £6.99, 439 pages. ISBN 0-00=651138-4 I sometimes think there are two Greg Bears - the dense, literary author of "Slant" versus the fairly straightforward writing of his earlier novels, for example. Or the writer of Big Dumb Object stories such as "Eon" versus the biological ideas of "Legacy". Or the cataclysmic author of "The Forge of God" versus...... Ah. Here we have the common theme. I'm not sure that everything I've read by Bear involves major changes in the human condition and/or environment - often over a short span of time - but it does seem to be a recurring theme in much of his work. Of course, it's a very common theme in SF, but it pretty much defines Bear's career, I think. What is also going on here is that Bear seems to like trying on different styles of writing and types of book. I never know what to expect next, though I usually like the results. With "Darwin's Radio", he has taken on the near-future thriller genre: With the exception of the gimmick, there is no obvious SF in this book - it is clearly set in the present day, and the technology is little different from right now, as far as I can tell. There are some lines here and there which suggest it could be set as much as ten years in the future, but that's the absolute upper limit.

Greg BEAR
Hegira,
