Richard Beard Cumberland Presbyterian Minister RICHARD BEARD, D.D. , was born November 27, 1799, in Sumner county, Tennessee. His early education was not without care, yet limited. His education preparatory to the ministry, was conducted better than usual for the time in his Church. He was licensed and commenced preaching in 1820, and was several years exclusively devoted to the work of the ministry. His health failing, he spent two or three years teaching. He was two and a half years at Cumberland College , Princeton, Kentucky, and graduated. He was immediately appointed Professor of Languages in that college. He afterwards spent five years at Sharon, Mississippi, in connection with Sharon College. In 1843, he became President of Cumberland College , Kentucky, and remained there ten and a half years, giving a great impetus to the classic training of young men, especially those seeking the ministry. In 1854, after the Cumberland Presbyterian Church established a chair of Systematic Theology in Cumberland University , at Lebanon, Tennessee, his high character as a scholar and educator at once called him to that position, which he has ever since held. He has given to the Church an able and standard work on Systematic Theology, in 3 vols., 8vo. It is regarded as the crystalization of Cumberland Presbyterian thought and faith. He has published two volumes, 12mo., of exceedingly interesting biographical sketches of ministers; a small 12mo. of popular divinity, in answer to the question, "Why am I a Cumberland Presbyterian?" and a large volume composed of "Miscellaneous Sermons, Reviews, and Essays," the last being a compilation of reviews and essays published in the

Richard Burbage and Will Kempe were two actors of the 16 th Century and were contemporaries of Shakespeare. Little is known about their portrayals of Shylock except that Shylock was supposed to have been presented with a red-beard and a false nose. The reason for the red beard may be related to the tradition of presenting Judas with a red-beard; Roderigo Lopez was also traditionally depicted as having a red-beard. Most critics suggest that these early depictions of Shylock were not especially sympathetic, and were perhaps even given over to the hyperbole of Marlowe's villainous Barabas. In 1841, less than two years after the introduction of the daguerreotype process in France, Richard Beard, a coal merchant and entrepreneur, had built and was operating England's first rooftop daguerreian portrait studio. John Goddard, a science lecturer at London's Polytechnic Institution, located downstairs from the studio on Regent Street in London, served as daguerreotypist, the person who actually operated the camera. The London newspaper The Times remarked favorably on the Beard studio's photographs: "The likenesses which we saw were admirable, and closely true to nature, beauties and deformities being exhibited alike." Beard's studio was a great financial success, and in 1841 he obtained the sole patent for daguerreotypes in England, Wales, and the British colonies. In 1850, however, like many operators of photography studios, he went bankrupt because of legal disputes over payment of the license fees required to practice daguerreotypy. Beard continued to sell photographs until 1857, when he passed the business on to his son.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF SOME OF THE EARLY MINISTERS OF THE CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. BY RICHARD BEARD, D.D. SOUTHERN METHODIST PUBLISHING HOUSE, NASHVILLE, TENN.: PUBLISHED FOR THE AUTHOR. PREFACE. T HE fruits of Christianity constitute its excellency. It is the developments and ameliorating influences of religion that give character and importance to its claims upon the confidence and consideration of man. The tree that produces no good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. That system of religion that does not improve the intellectual and moral condition of its subjects, is without intrinsic meritit has no recommending qualities, and as a consequence, the intelligent mind, in its pursuit of happiness, turns from it to something that promises positive good in this life, and salvation in the life to come. That the Christian Religion is a positive benefit; that it does better the condition of man; that it does elevate him in the scale of moral and intellectual being, may be regarded as axiomatic truths. If, however, evidence be necessary to illustrate this, the lives of the good and the useful of every age may be presented; for their pious walk, holy conversation, "work and labor of love," is Christianity in its practical developments. witnessing a good profession , and in the darkest hour of trial bearing their testimony to the truth of Christianity, living by faith upon the Son of God, and dying in the triumphant assurances of his salvation. These things being true, we trust that this volume may receive a hearty welcome into hundreds and thousands of Christian families, and that it may be read with profit by them all, and that it may prove a blessing to the Church and the world. BEYOND THE BESTSELLERS, SUMMER 1999
Baker, Kevin DREAMLAND
This 500-page epic of New York City starts with an immigrant ship approaching the harbor, Freud among the passengers for a lecture tour mistaking the spectacle of Coney Island's Dreamland for the city in flames. We then follow stowaway Kid Twist through gang life, Tammany Hall corruption, and the labor movement as he becomes involved with garment worker Esther just before the days of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire. Entertaining historical fiction with a lot to say from a guy whose earlier novel was based on the life of Ty Cobb.
Beard, Richard DAMASCUS
An Einsteinian concept of time marks this novel of Spencer and Hazel and November 1, 1993, the day after the deaths of Fellini and River Phoenix. Spencer and Hazel knew each other as children, keep in touch, re-meet and couple, and all on this same day, apparently, in parallel planes. Do Spencer, and Hazel's demented, adoring student Henry really vie for Hazel viabilliards in an empty swimming pool? Yep. Fine experimental fiction from Beard, whose last book offered us up a nicotine-addicted cat and dog.

Nick Jenkins, the narrator of Anthony Powell's A Dance to The Music of Time series, discovers that, when observed at close quarters, all people are pursued by their own particular demons. Henry Mitsui, a disturbed and dangerous young man who stalks one of the protagonists in Richard Beard's Damascus , attempts to control his behaviour by 'giving' a life to everyone he encounters naming them, placing them, imaginatively employing them... Beard, whose first novel was generated and structured by the rhythms of addiction and the arithmetic of giving up smoking, attempts in Damascus to grapple with questions of identity. What is a life, what is it made of, how can it change? Everything takes place on 1 November 1993 the day on which we all became citizens of the new Europe (and therefore, everything changed and stayed exactly the same). Hazel Burns and Spencer Kelly exist in a perpetual present tense 1 November 1993 is the day they are born, the day of their first kiss, the day a terrible accident befell their respective families, the day they first meet after a years-long telephone relationship. Today's the day; tomorrow never comes. A concluding 'Acknowledgement' reveals that all but twelve of the nouns used in the novel have been taken from ' The Times (London) of 1 November 1993'. So we then ask 'which twelve?' One for each of the twelve chapters (barring Chapter 'nought')? One

Descendants of John Beard
from a letter dated December 2, 1959 from Edith M. Beard to Phin Horton ‘I thought you might like to have a copy of the Beard Pedigree which I have spent considerable time compiling… The Beards who were in Nantucket in 1710 were Quakers and all…up to James William A. Beard and Martha Henley were Quakers. James and Martha were “married out of unity” and did not “condone” and rejoin the Quaker Church but became Methodist. I have found no skeletons; the worst, I guess, was one of the clan who was dismissed for fiddling in his home and card playing and another for joining the army. They “condoned their misconduct” and were reinstated. There is some question as to whether “Asbury” or “Ashbury” is correct in the name of William A. and James. Wm. A. I have found it both ways, but in J.W. Beard’s Journal in his own handwriting it is “Ashbury” so I feel that to be right. Or was there an ardent Methodist somewhere who made it “Asbury”?’ Unless otherwise referenced all information is taken from Edith Beard’s “Beard Pedigree”

D o you remember the Fighting Fantasy books? Computer games for people whose parents wouldn't buy them a computer, each page of a Fighting Fantasy book would end with a number of choices. If you wanted to attack the skeleton with a sword you would turn to page 33; if you wanted to scream and run away, you would turn to page 47 and so on. Damascus is a bit like that. Don't worry, there is no frantic page-flipping in Richard Beard's second novel and there aren't any zombies or skeletons. Instead, Beard employs an unconventional narrative structure to craft a tale which explores how life can change in a single moment. Damascus is the story of Hazel and Spencer, two children who meet for the first time - or two adults dealing with a one-night stand, or two teenagers conducting a long-distance telephone relationship. The story takes place in London or Glasgow or any one of a thousand different towns but the date remains constant: November 1, 1993.
