    History
    Visitors Info ... Volunteers
Beckford's Tower was built in 1827 for William Beckford, one of the nation's most accomplished and interesting characters. He used the Tower as a retreat, to study, to house some of his precious art collection and rare books and to enjoy the commanding view from the Tower's Belvedere.
Visitors to the Tower can enjoy climbing the Tower's beautiful spiral staircase up to the luxuriously restored Belvedere and admire the panoramic view over the surrounding countryside.
The two-storey building at the base of the Tower houses the museum collection on the first floor. A fascinating display of prints, pictures, architectural models, objects and furniture illustrate William Beckford's life and interests both at Fonthill and Bath. The ground floor rooms have been leased to the Landmark Trust, which has carefully restored them recreating something of Backford's opulent interiors, and offers the space as a holiday flat.
The surrounding Victorian Cemetery, containing William Beckford's tomb, was in his lifetime part of the beautiful pleasure garden, 'Beckford's ride', which ran from his house in Lansdown Crescent to the Tower at the top of Lansdown Hill.

    Encyclopedia

Beckford, William Beckford, William, , English author. A wealthy dilettante, Beckford had a great desire to ascend to the nobility. Unfortunately his erratic and strange behavior often worked against his ambitions. About 1796 he built in Wiltshire an extravagant Gothic castle, Fonthill Abbey, where he lived in mysterious seclusion and earned himself the reputation of an eccentric. Although not deeply interested in politics, he served in the House of Commons from 1784 to 1794 and from 1806 to 1820. Beckford is chiefly remembered today for the Gothic romance Vathek, a bizarre tale about the adventures of the shockingly cruel Caliph Vathek. The book was written in French but was first published (1786) in English translation. He was also the author of several books of travel and two burlesques on the sentimental novels of his day, The Elegant Enthusiast (1796) and Azemia See biography by P. Summers (1966).

    William Beckford's Scrapbooks
Rictor Norton Of particular interest to our examination of William Beckford's life is the interest he maintained in the molly subculture. He is forever gathering information sent by Franchi concerning the gay areas in such places as York or even Cornwall (he hoped that amongst the "brothers" or Methodists there he could find "one who was a bit of a mameluke," i.e. catamite, 26 July 1810), or gossip concerning a general and a batman in the barracks, nicknamed "Mary Clarke" (22 October 1817). His immense library contained not merely rare and valuable books, but also a few works of homosexual interest, such as The Penitent Death of . . . John Atherton (he and his tithe proctor were hanged for buggery in 1640 in Dublin), the Trial of Lord Audley (Mervyn Touchet, Earl of Castlehaven, beheaded for rape and sodomy in 1631), and a specially bound copy of the trial of Colonel Robert Passingham and John Edwards, who had conspired to blackmail George Forrester by accusing him of unnatural crimes in 1805. In addition to these volumes, for many hours he poured over a special scrapbook into which he pasted press reports of all the homosexual scandals of the day, and he sometimes recorded his reactions to such events in letters to Franchi. For example, here are his comments on the arrest of the Vere Street Coterie, which he read about in the
