Tenth International Congress on the Enlightenment
    Dublin, Ireland July 25-31, 1999
The published list of sessions and round tables leaves the
impression that the Beckford Round Table is a closed shop. I hasten to
correct that impression with this call for papers.
The last three international congresses have brought together
scholars and enthusiasts of a range of interests and nations to share
ideas on William Thomas Beckford of Fonthill (1760-1844), a figure whose
own activities include music, politics, writing, landscaping, collecting, travelling, and building. For the coming congress, I encourage potential participants to let your thoughts range around echoes of Oscar Wilde and the fin de siecle as you focus on the topic: NATURE IMITATING ART: MORALITY AND AESTHETICS IN THE LIFE OR WORKS OF WILLIAM BECKFORD Please submit your title and a two-page outline by May 30th.

Local Exhibition: William Beckford 1760-1844: An Eye for the Magnificent - until 14 April 2002 William Beckford (1760 - 1844) was an eighteenth century millionaire, travel writer, novelist, visionary and builder of towers. He is one of the greatest names in the history of collecting.
In 1822, his decision to sell the contents of Fonthill Abbey, caused a feeding frenzy. Fonthill Abbey revealed Beckford as a leading advocate of Gothic architecture, design and history, but his taste was broader than that - he had a passion for the Medieval period that stretched to include Oriental, Islamic and Renaissance work. Beckford ignited the enthusiasm and taste of a generation of architects and designers.
He inherited his family's Jamaican sugar plantations, and was known as "England's wealthiest son". He completed a Grand Tour of unparalleled lavishness and became a figure of international repute as a young man, not least as the author of the sensational novel Vathek, which he wrote at 21, signalling the arrival of a person of truly exotic character and taste.
His marriage to the daughter of the Earl of Aboyne in 1783 was, however, swiftly followed by a fall from grace as dramatic as that of Oscar Wilde's a century later. Accused of an illicit love affair with the seventeen-year-old Lord Courtenay, he was forced to embark on a decade of travel and social isolation on the continent, becoming one of the earliest and most interesting of travel writers in the process.

    Vathek and Other Stories:
    A William Beckford Reader
Edited by Malcolm Jack Beckford's Gothic novel Vathek , an Arabian tale, was originally written in French when the author was twenty-one. Published in English in 1786, it was one of the most successful of the oriental tales then in fashion. William Beckford (1760-1844) inherited a large fortune and, at the age of nineteen, went on a tour of Holland, Germany, Belgium, France and Italy. He was a Member of Parliament and a traveller who spent large sums of money collecting rare books, curiosities and paintings for the embellishment of his Gothic Extravaganza, Fonthill Abbey, where he lived in opulent seclusion until forced by bankruptcy to sell it in 1822. This edition makes available to a new generation of scholars and general readers, the originality of Beckford's ideas, and the excellence of his prose.

The British collector William Beckford helped to define many of the most significant parameters of nineteenth-century collecting, as he was unbound by conventional intellectual or aesthetic prejudice. He was among the first of the great connoisseurs to collect Asian and Islamic art while breaking with the taste of his contemporaries. He assembled an eclectic and luxurious collection that included ancient, medieval, and Renaissance art, as well as seventeenth-, eighteenth-, and early-nineteenth-century objects. His active participation in the design of various objects reveals a discriminating aesthetic sensibility that set him apart from his contemporaries. His influence also extended beyond his day; generations of renowned private collectors in Great Britain, on the Continent, and in the United States have reflected his interest in the art of many cultures and periods. This magnificent book describes Beckford’s flamboyant personality and unconventional life. Authorities tell us that at an early age, Beckford was known as “England’s wealthiest son,” due to a prodigal income generated from Jamaican sugar plantations. As a youth, he traveled widely and made his mark as a novelist, composer of music, and impresario of design. His most ambitious project was his fantastic residence Fonthill Abbey; the construction and furnishing of this Gothic Revival edifice consumed nearly twenty-five years of Beckford’s life and vast amounts of his fortune, branding him with a reputation as a recluse and eccentric.
