Included among the Beckford Papers are a number of Brazilian Modinhas, which are included in volume six of the edition. Here are a few of Beckford's comments on this kind of song. Portuguese Journal, Thursday June 7th 1787
I passed my evening at Mr Horne's very delightfully in hearing D. Luisa de Almeida and her music master, a little square friar with green eyes, sing Brazilian modinhas. This is an original sort of music different from any I ever heard, the most seducing, the most voluptuous imaginable, the best calculated to throw saints off their guard and to inspire profane deliriums. I was in high spirits and danced with a parcel of young tits till two in the morning. ibid, Saturday June 9th 1787
Two old women of quality, D. Joanna de Manezes and the Marchioness of Penalva will have it that St Anthony has appeared to me and commanded me to raise up a wall round his convent to keep off certain lewd minstrels of the female gender who keep tinkling their guitars all night under the friars' windows and warble filthy modinhas. ibid, Wednesday June 13th 1787

'After Reading Ajax'
...
Performance Details

Lima sat down to the pianoforte and I sung till dinner. Never in my life did I sing with more expression. There is a scene in one of Lima's opera in which the ghost of Polydorus calls upon Aeneas, just arrived on the Thracian shore, to revenge his death on Polynestor. The music is melancholy and pathetic to a striking degree, and I gave the bitter cry of 'Vendica i torti miei', which often recurs in the air, it full energy. I was so possessed by these affecting sounds that I could hardly eat.

William Beckford's Fonthill
Now with the movie of Fonthill in streaming video Fonthill Abbey was built by the Gothic novelist and wealthy eccentric William Beckford in 1796; it was a huge building, with a central octagonal tower 280 feet high, and main doors 35 feet in height. It dominated the skyline, but most of the building collapsed in 1825. A few parts of the building remain in the park near Fonthill Gifford in Wiltshire, where the local pub is called the Beckford Arms. This attempt to recreate the building, using 3D modelling techniques, was a project undertaken by Mike Harrisson during his MSc course at the University of Huddersfield in 1997. The 3D Model was created using Graphisoft's ArchiCad program, a specialist Architectural CAD program. The two views are shown from the 3D Modeller during the creation of the model. When the model had been completed, a fly-through movie was created, with each frame photorendered from the model. Frames from the digital video: Frame from fly-through movie showing exterior view Camera enters great hall and ascends stairs Looking up the octagonal tower from the top of the stairs Camera flies through window and over fountain in courtyard Play the Fonthill movie in streaming video . When in a Serenade ( Arcadian Pastoral ) he uses a guitar, he may not do anything adventurous with it, but at least he shows an understanding of its character. The thing which raises the music above lesser composers of the period is its melodic gift, even if there are few surprises in its unfailing regularity. For all his admiration for Mozart, Beckford lacked the musical technique to flip a repetition, vary phrase length or to detour via strange harmonic territory in the manner of his idol. But then it was an age that set little store by originality. For in 1794 both his daughters would have been under 10, and he could have built these follies for them to play in just as, I argue, the east bank grottos may well have been built for him at a similar age.
