William Beebe

Charles William Beebe (1877 - 1962) was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in New Jersey as a keen naturalist. He wrote his first article at the age of 18 on his observations on the brown creeper in Harper's Young People Magazine, and taught himself taxidermy in his study of America's natural history.
He spent three years at Columbia University, and while there did work experience at the New York Zoo. He became Assistant Bird Keeper at the recently built New York Zoological Park, where he excelled to become Assistant Curator of Birds.
In 1902 he married Mary Blair Rice, from a wealthy old colonial family and together went to Mexico to study and obtain animal speciments for the Zoological Park.
In 1909 they went on a sponsored trip to study the pheasants of the world in the natural habitats. Travelling to Egypt, Ceylon, India, Sikkin, Burma, Yunnan, the Malay States, Java, Borneo, China and Japan, they returned to New York 17 months later. 'A Monograph of the Pheasants' was published, a giant work of four volumes at over 50,000 words per volume, but only 250 copies were made, as publication was halted with the start of the First World War.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/ice/sfeature/beebe.html
Over seventy percent of the earth's surface is covered by oceans, only a fraction of which has ever been explored. William Beebe was one of this century's leading pioneers into the oceanic world. The Brooklyn, New York, native possessed an unrelenting curiosity about the natural world around, and beneath, him. Through his dozens of books describing his various expeditions, Beebe brought the average citizen in closer touch with the natural world.
Beebe's interest in ornithology took him to the far reaches of Mexico, Asia, and the Galapagos Islands, and deep into the jungles of South America. In 1919 he was named director of tropical research for the New York Zoological Society. His many exotic expeditions yielded an impressive collection of rare birds for the Society's zoological gardens. In 1930 when he began his historic undersea adventures, the 51-year-old Beebe had already established himself as a scientist of international renown. Little did he know that his greatest contributions were still to come.
Beebe chose as a diving spot an area 10 miles off Nonsuch, a tiny island off of the coast of Bermuda. In June 1930, the bathysphere, along with Beebe, Barton, and a team of 26 assistants was floated out on a huge barge. Connecting the bathysphere to the barge was a 3,500-foot steel cable, almost an inch thick. A solid rubber hose, carrying telephone wires and electricity for lights, provided those within the bathysphere their only contact with the outside world. Once inside the sphere, Beebe remarked upon the tight quarters it provided: "The longer we were in it, the smaller it seemed to get."

The Bathysphere Adventures On Wednesday, August 15, 1934, William Beebe and Otis Barton made themselves world famous by descending in their "Bathysphere" 3,028 feet beneath the ocean surface. William "Will" Beebe began exploring the undersea world with his homemade diving helmet April 9, 1925. He writes about those and other dives in The National Geographic Magazine ("A Wonderer Under Sea," Dec. 1932). He encouraged others to join him in the "Society of Wonders" in what he called the "Helmet Kingdom." This "realm of gorgeous life and color," he said, was the shallow area of the ocean near land between six and 60 feet deep. Beebe with his home made diving helmet. I believe the Arcturus is visible in the background. William Beebe dreamed of exploring the deeper locations where he and his air hose tether could not reach. He said that based on "sketchy recollections" with Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, the idea for a spherical deep-sea vessel came from Roosevelt who drew a sketch on a napkin while the two chatted together about exploring the ocean depths. Since Beebe was already a pretty well known figure from his popular books, his newest inkling of exploring the deep blue sea in a submersible chamber was published in a New York newspaper in late 1926. Soon Beebe's office was deluged with crackpot designs and strange drawings, proposing all sorts of devices. Those who knew Beebe knew that he wanted nothing elaborate or overly mechanical. He once said that although he knew how to drive, he disliked even driving a car. Beebe wanted something simple, so informed a mutual friend of his and Beebe to Otis Barton.

Charles william beebe (1877 1962) is most famous for his world recorddescent in the Bathysphere with Otis Barton in 1934. beebe
http://members.aol.com/chines6930/mw1/bio.htm

Charles William Beebe
(1877 - 1962) is most famous for his world record descent in the Bathysphere with Otis Barton in 1934. Beebe also wrote popular books about his exploring experiences working with the New York Zoological Park (Bronx Zoo). William Beebe was born July 29, 1877 in Brooklyn, New York. His family and friends called him "Will." His father Charles was a dealer of paper and was often away on business. The Beebe family moved a few times and eventually settled for the remainder of Will's childhood at 73 Ashland Avenue in East Orange, New Jersey. Will's mother Henrietta was the homemaker. Beebe loved both his parents very much and was their only son. The whole family was very interested in nature and thus Will literally grew up as a naturalist. The family often visited the American Museum of Natural History and its assorted natural history lectures. That is where Will went to get his specimens identified. He had many other friends who were also interested in natural history. In September of 1891 Will started East Orange High School. He was very proud of the school and as an alumnus, did much to improve it. Beebe in China with Junglefowl bird and his old high school in East Orange, New Jersey; Natural History Museum.

Prior to the creation of Delap's database, researchers had to consult a card catalogue index in the Archives to locate an Illinois veteran. The new database provides a much more convenient and readily accessible resource for the genealogist and historian. The researcher can use Delap's index to obtain further information on a veteran from the published reports or the Archives record series, Muster Rolls (RS301.20).

This book contains marriages with names, dates and additional data. Though the compilers neglected to provide the Marriage Volume number and page from the Marriage Record Volumes in the Probate Court. It's obvious that much time and labour has been done to make available this information. The page number specified is that found in the book.
Please note that the additions at the beginning were from a book titled OHIO MARRIAGES edited by Marjorie Smith.
The marriages are extracted from The Old Northwest Genealogical Quarterly. These volumes were published from 1898 through 1912 by the " "Old Northwest" Genealogical Society. The contents of these volumes include genealogies, cemetery inscriptions, church records, court records and other information mostly for the state of Ohio. This volume is in my possession. (meb)
