BRENDAN BEHAN

Childhood Creations-Brendan Behan Age 9 1923
Interviewer: David Kilby Monday, 21 January 2002 A poem written in 1923 by a very young Brendan Behan, to a young girl by the name of Teresa Byrne as an apology for getting her into trouble with the Nuns. Teresa I am sorry
If I got you bashed in school.
It was a stupid thing to do
And I feel an awful fool.
I was really raging When I heard you went to the pics With, all the eejits, Snotty nosed Paddy Fitz. I think you were awful decent Not to give my name. Not even to your Da or Ma, But shouldered all the blame. Oh what can I do now, love, To restore your happiness? Will I go across to Gill's pub And to your Ma confess? Actually, Teresa, I've got two and six So will you stop sulking in the parlour And go with me to the flicks? I'll take you to the Drummer To the ninepenny cushion seats, And that will leave me with a bob To get your oranges and sweets. To give this its proper ending I'll wind up with yours forever, Brendan.

The great Irish writer Brendan Behan was born in Dublin on 9 February 1923. His family on both sides had strong Republican sympathies. At the time of Behan's birth, his father was in a British compound as a result of his involvement in the Irish uprising of 1916-1922. Behan left school at the age of 14, following in his father's footsteps, and working as a house painter. From the age of nine he had served in a youth organization connected with the Irish Republican Army, and in the late 1930s he was to become an IRA messenger boy. Brendan Francis Behan (1923-1964) At the age of sixteen he was arrested in Liverpool, England while carrying explosives for the IRA and sentenced to a boys reform school in Suffolk for eighteen months, an experience that would form the basis of his novel " Borstal Boy ". After release Behan returned to Ireland, however in 1942 he was sentenced to 14 years for the attempted murder of a policeman. He served the sentence at Mountjoy Prison and at the Curragh Military Camp. Whilst in prison he broadened his education, becoming a fluent Irish speaker, and began to write short stories in an inventive stylization of Dublin vernacular. In 1946 he was released under a general amnesty. He was in prison again in Manchester in 1947, serving a short term for allegedly helping an IRA prisoner to escape. Behan also sailed intermittently on ships - he had become a certified seaman in 1949.

Brendan Behan self-described "drinker with a writing problem" is in the same league as literary legends T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, and Dylan Thomas. Drawing on a major collection of Behan's prison correspondence and documents, the author also interviewed family members, friends, writers, as well as Behan's editors and producers.

Brendan Behan was born at 14 Russell Street, Dublin on February 9th, 1923, the son of Stephen and Kathleen Behan.
Raised in and around the tough north Dublin tenements, he soon established a reputation for his quick wit, his love of street stories and ballads and his capacity for prolific amounts of alcohol.
He left school at the early age of fourteen to start an apprenticeship as a house painter. Much of his formative years were spent in and out of prison both in Ireland and in England, and these experiences provided inspiration for his literary abilities. Although he wrote many fine short essays and newspaper columns, he is best known for his world rated plays 'The Hostage' and the autobiographical 'Borstal Boy', which were received with great acclaim not only in Dublin, but also on Broadway and the West End of London.
Known in Dublin as 'the plague of the cities barmen', he was a familiar figure in the literary pubs and drinking houses and was as much noted for his singing, boozing and brawling as he was for his writing.
Despite his tempestuous personality and deep decline into alcoholism, his funeral on Monday 23rd March 1964 to Glasnevin Cemetery was one of the largest ever seen in Dublin, with thousands lining O'Connell Street to watch the final journey of one of Dublin's most colourful and best loved characters.

This prisoner's song of utter longing and despair opens Behan's first play "The Quare Fellow," and frames it thereafter; sung off-stage (originally, when the play was first produced, in Dublin in 1954, by Behan himself), it comes as if from a lockdown cell. The play is about "judicial hanging" capital punishment and based on Behan's imprisonment from 1942 to 1946 in Mountjoy Gaol for republican activities; the song is about routine, every day being the same, about the way prison destroys time and, with it, any sense of history.... ...this is "I Shall Be Released" without any hope for freedom. A Greenwich Village commonplace in the early 1960s and never done better than by Liam Clancy....
