Aphra Behn is often said to be the first professional female writer although like most of her contemporaries very little hard evidence about Behn's life exists.
Her parents (John and Amy Amis, or Bartholomew and Elizabeth Johnson depending on where you look) took her to an English colony in Surinam (later to become Dutch Guiana) as a child. Some reports say her father was to be Lieutenant Governor of the colony but died on the journey there. At some point Aphra Amis (or Aphra Johnson?) returned to England and married a Dutch-English (or German-English?) merchant, Behn.
During the 1660s, Mr Behn died and Aphra went to the Netherlands to spy for Charles II of England. This was a very important post due to the Anglo-Dutch tension, and indeed war, of that period. Some say he stopped paying her and she ended up in a debtors prison after borrowing the money to get back to England. Some allege her professional writing career was driven by a desire never to end up depending on others financially.
Whatever the reason, Aphra Behn's plays began to be produced in 1670 or 1671. The plays were popular in her time, but she also published prose and poetry. At some point (around 1678?) Aphra Behn published what is considered by some to be the first modern novel, 'Oroonoko'. Taking (for Behn's time) an anti-slavery stance, it tells the story of an African Prince who is captured by an English slave trader and transported to Surinam. The novel was (later in 1688?) included in the collection 'Three Histories'.

Virginia Woolf
A Room of One's Own Aphra Behn , the first professional woman writer in English, lived from 1640 to 1689. After John Dryden , she was the most prolific dramatist of the Restoration, but it is for her pioneering work in prose narrative that she achieved her place in literary history.

Details about Aphra Behn's life are sketchy, but, among many other things, she lived in South America for a time and was a spy for King Charles II. Her interesting life gave her much to write about as well as opinions considered scandalous in her lifetime—many of which are considered controversial to this day. Most notably, Behn became England's first female to earn a living through her pen ( Britannica Home Behn was born around 1640 in Wye, Kent, England (Townsend), but grew-up in Suriname, South America, where she made the acquaintance of the enslaved Negro prince Oroonoko—who would later become the subject of one of her novels. Her maiden name was most likely Amis, but after returning to London in 1658 ( Britannica Home ) or 1663 (Townsend) or 1664 (Nestvold), she married a London merchant named Behn ( Britannica Home ). After her husband died circa 1666, Behn was hired by King Charles II as a spy in Antwerp, "sending back political and naval information" (Townsend).Because the king wouldn't pay for her return expenses, Behn was thrown in debtor's prison upon her return to England, but probably quickly released (Townsend). Around 1670, Behn began to write plays, the first being the

Behn, Aphra 1640-89, first professional female English author. Little is known of her early life, but there is evidence that c.1658 she married a London merchant of Dutch descent named Behn. After the death of her husband, Aphra Behn became an English spy in the Dutch Wars (1665-67), adopting the pseudonym Astrea, under which she later published much of her verse. Her career as a secret agent was unsuccessful, and she returned to England exhausted and penniless, forced even to serve time in debtors' prison. By 1670 her first play had been performed, and by 1677 she gained her much desired fame with the eminently successful production of The Rover. All her plays are noted for their broad, bawdy humor. Despite her success as a playwright, however, her best literary achievement can be found in her novels. The most notable of these is Oroonoko (1688), a heroical love story, the first philosophical novel in English. Aphra Behn was famous for her life-style as well as her works; her denial of woman's subservience to man and her high-living, bohemian existence has led critics to describe her as the George Sand of the Restoration and a forerunner of the feminist movement. Her literary reputation declined rapidly in the 18th cent., but Montague Summers's collected edition of her work (6 vol., 1915) revived an interest in her. See biography by F. M. Link (1968).

Aphra Behn, Oroonoko, or The Royal Slave Genre: the work's genre is still debatable, but it claims to be a memoir and travel narrative (of Behn's years in the colony of "Surinam," later called Dutch Guiana), as well as the biography of Oroonoko, whom his captors called "Caesar." Form: prose. Characters: "I," a character in some sense modeled on the real-life Aphra Behn; Oroonoko , an African prince and later a slave to the English who called him "Caesar"; Imoinda , his lover, also enslaved and sometimes called "Clemene"; Jamoan , an opposing warrior chief who, conquered by Oroonoko, becomes his vassal; the King of Coramantien , whom Oroonoko serves and later betrays, and who betrays him; the slave-running English ship captain ; and various English colonists, especially the supposedly sympathetic plantation overseer named Trefrey , the colony's deputy governor named William Byam , the gallant Colonel Martin , and " Bannister , a wild Irishman" (1910). Summary: Issues and Research Sources:
  • We have mentioned the way in which Lady Anne Halkett's memoir echoes features of the medieval chivalric romance.
