    Looking Backward: 2000-1887
    by Edward Bellamy
    Editor's Introduction
Edward Bellamy's novel Looking Backward was written in 1881, first published in 1887, and became enormously popular, selling over a million copies. This text is drawn primarily from the Vanguard Printings 1917 edition. Bellamy was born in 1850 in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. As a young man he studied law and entered the bar, but never practiced. This novel, his most popular, may be of use today for its strong efforts to refute that American social relations are either wise or just. By requiring his narrator (and presumably his reader) to consider the possibility that our own social mores are hardly equitable, reasonable or utopic, Bellamy's novel was used to support Progressive reform in the 1890s we can only hope it may help to encourage critical reflection about contemporary social relations.

These qualities were equal to the suffering and the death which came to him in the midst of his work, and cut him off from writing that one more book with which every author hopes to round his career. He suffered greatly, but he bore his suffering greatly; and as for his death, it is told that when, toward the last, those who loved him were loath to leave him at night alone, as he preferred to be left, he asked, "What can happen to me? I can only die." I am glad that he lived to die at home in Chicopee,in the village environment by which he interpreted the heart of the American nation, and knew how to move it more than any other American author who has lived. The theory of those who think differently is that he simply moved the popular fancy; and this may suffice to explain the state of some people, but it will not account for the love and honor in which his name is passionately held by the vast average, East and West. His fame is safe with them, and his faith is an animating force concerning whose effect at this time or some other time it would not be wise to prophesy. Whether his ethics will keep his aesthetics in remembrance I do not know; but I am sure that one cannot acquaint one's self with his merely artistic work, and not be sensible that in Edward Bellamy we were rich in a romantic imagination surpassed only by that of Hawthorne.

EDWARD BELLAMY
The Blindman's World
THE narrative to which this note is introductory was found among the papers of the late Professor S. Erastus Larrabee, and, as an acquaintance of the gentleman to whom they were bequeathed, I was requested to prepare it for publication. This turned out a very easy task, for the document proved of so extraordinary a character that, if published at all, it should obviously be without change. It appears that the professor did really, at one time in his life, have an attack of vertigo, or something of the sort, under circumstances similar to those described by him, and to that extent his narrative may be founded on fact. How soon it shifts from that foundation, or whether it does at all, the reader must conclude for himself. It appears certain that the professor never related to any one, while living, the stranger features of the experience here narrated, but this might have been merely from fear that his standing as a man of science would be thereby injured.
THE PROFESSOR'S NARRATIVE
It was the time of the year when Mars is most favorably situated for observation, and, anxious not to lose an hour of the precious season, I had spent the greater part of several successive nights in the observatory. I believed that I had made some original observations as to the trend of the coast of Kepler Land between Lagrange Peninsula and Christie Bay, and it was to this spot that my observations were particularly directed.

Bellamy Unequalled Listen to Bellamy explain the social essence of capitalism in terms that all can understand: Looking Backward And who today explains as clearly the injustice of capitalist wages, or the moral logic of equal compensation for all who give their best effort? Dr. Leete: You ask me how we regulate wages; I can only reply that there is no idea in the modern social economy which at all corresponds with what was meant by wages in your day. Julian: By what title does the individual claim his particular share? What is the basis of allotment? Dr. Leete: His title is his humanity. The basis of his claim is the fact that he is a man.

Nor was it the industrial class alone that was attracted by this social vision. A number of the leaders of the culture and conscience thought of Boston were so impressed that ere long the Nationalist Club was formed. Among its members were Edward Everett Hale, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, and Anne Whitney, the sculptor, and Miss A. A. Chevaillier. I do not know whether William Dean Howells was numbered among its members or not. He lived in Boston at that time and was deeply interested in the views of both Henry George and Edward Bellamy. It was the great social awakening, of which "Progress and Poverty" and "Looking Backward" were at once expressions and promoters, that doubtless suggested the writing of "A Traveler from Altruria."

FROM 2000 TO 1887
BY
EDWARD BELLAMY
  • Author's Preface Chapter 1: I first saw the light in the city of Boston in the year 1857. Chapter 2: The thirtieth day of May, 1887, fell on a Monday. It was one of the annual holidays of the nation in the latter third of the nineteenth century.... Chapter 3: "He is going to open his eyes. He had better see but one of us at first." Chapter 4: I did not faint, but the effort to realize my position made me very giddy.... Chapter 5: When, in the course of the evening the ladies retired, leaving Dr. Leete and myself alone, he sounded me as to my disposition for sleep.... Chapter 6: Dr. Leete ceased speaking, and I remained silent, endeavoring to form some general conception of the changes in the arrangements of society implied in the tremendous revolution which he had described. Chapter 7: "It is after you have mustered your industrial army into service," I said, "that I should expect the chief difficulty to arise...." Chapter 8: When I awoke I felt greatly refreshed, and lay a considerable time in a dozing state, enjoying the sensation of bodily comfort. Chapter 9: Dr. and Mrs. Leete were evidently not a little startled to learn, when they presently appeared, that I had been all over the city alone that morning....

55. Edward Bellamy, Looking Backward: Author's Preface
LOOKING BACKWARD AUTHOR'S PREFACE Historical Section Shawmut College,Boston, December 26, 2000 Living as we do in the closing year
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/BELLAMY/preface.html
LOOKING BACKWARD AUTHOR'S PREFACE Historical Section Shawmut College, Boston, December 26, 2000 The object of this volume is to assist persons who, while desiring to gain a more definite idea of the social contrasts between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, are daunted by the formal aspect of the histories which treat the subject. Warned by a teacher's experience that learning is accounted a weariness to the flesh, the author has sought to alleviate the instructive quality of the book by casting it in the form of a romantic narrative, which he would be glad to fancy not wholly devoid of interest on its own account. The reader, to whom modern social institutions and their underlying principles are matters of course, may at times find Dr. Leete's explanations of them rather tritebut it must be remembered that to Dr. Leete's guest they were not matters of course, and that this book is written for the express purpose of inducing the reader to forget for the nonce that they are so to him. One word more. The almost universal theme of the writers and orators who have celebrated this bimillennial epoch has been the future rather than the past, not the advance that has been made, but the progress that shall be made, ever onward and upward, till the race shall achieve its ineffable destiny. This is well, wholly well, but it seems to me that nowhere can we find more solid ground for daring anticipations of human development during the next one thousand years, than by "Looking Backward" upon the progress of the last one hundred.

The Strange Origin of the Pledge of Allegiance by John W. Baer
from Propaganda Review
Summer 1989
Every class day over 60 million public and parochial school teachers and students in the US recite the Pledge of Allegiance along with thousands of Americans at official meetings of the Boy Scouts, GirlScouts, Elks, Masons, American Legion, and others. During the televised bicentennial celebration of the US Constitution for the school children on September 17, 1987, the children as a group did not recite any part of the Constitution. However, President Reagan did lead the nation's school children in reciting the Pledge. Yet probably not one of them knows the history or original meaning of the Pledge. In the presidential campaign of 1988, George Bush successfully used the Pledge in his campaign against Mike Dukakis. Ironically, Bush did not seem to know the words of the Pledge until his campaign manager told him to memorize it. The teachers and students in the New England private schools he attended, Greenwich Country Day School and Phillips Andover Academy, did not recite the pledge. By contrast, Dukakis and his mother, a public school teacher, recited the Pledge in the public schools. Yet Bush criticized Dukakis for vetoing a bill inMassachusetts requiring public school teachers but not private school teachers to recite the Pledge. Dukakis vetoed the bill on grounds that it violated the constitutional right of free speech. [Actually, the case Dukakis
