JOHN BENNETT Newspaper Unknown Deaths. Hon. John Bennett, an old and honored citizen of this county, died at his residence in this city Sunday morning, Dec. 6th, 1885, at 6 o'clock. Deceased was born in the state of Virginia and was 80 years of age. He came to this state in 1835, and located in Menard county, then attached to Sangamon. He represented this district in the General Assembly of Illinois in 1840-1, and was an active in influential member. He was a devoted and consistent member of the order of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons for a period of over 59 years. He was Deputy Grand Master of Illinois for several years. He has been identified with the progress and development of the country, encouraging all public enterprises of Menard county since her first organization. Deceased left surviving a devoted wife, a son J. T. Bennett, and a daughter, Mrs. J. A. Pinkerton. Funeral services Tuesday at 10 o'clock under the auspices of Clinton Lodge No. 19, A. F. and A. M. Services were held in the Presbyterian church. Rev. T. U. McFarland delivered the address. At the conclusion of Rev. McFarland's discourse friends and brethren viewed the deceased for the last time. Then the remains were taken to Rose Hill Cemetery where interred according to the Masonic ritual.

JOHN R. BENNETT, of Janesville, Wis., an excellent portrait of whom appears upon the opposite page, Judge of the Twelfth Judicial Circuit Court, is a native of New York, born in Rodman, Jefferson County, Nov. 1, 1820. His parents, Daniel and Deborah Leeds (SPICER) BENNETT, were descended from English Puritan ancestors, who settled in Connecticut about the year 1668. The father was the fourth son of David and Rebecca (MINER) BENNETT, and was born at Stonington, Conn., on the 16th day of February, 1793, while David BENNETT, the paternal grandfather of our subject, was a son of Stephen and Mehitable BENNETT. The mother of the judge was a daughter of William and Hannah (LEEDS) SPICER, and a granddaughter of Gideon LEEDS, whose home was in Leeds, England. Reared under strictly religious influences, and possessing a deep veneration for the Holy Scriptures, Judge BENNETT has from early youth given the subject of spiritual life, and the relation of the man to his Creator, deep thought and earnest consideration. "He is a New Churchman or Swedenborgian", as the members of the denomination are more frequently called. They hold that the Sacred Scriptures, unlike all human composition, contain within the letter a spiritual sense, as far above the literal sense in beauty, brightness and power as the immortal soul excels the perishable body in which it groans in this life, being burdened. He counts it a fortunate circumstance that his ancestors, so far as he has any knowledge of them, were deeply religious; and for the pious instruction received from his parents, who now, he trusts, occupy the everlasting abodes of the blest, he is under a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.

PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD MACOUPIN COUNTY ILLINOIS - 1891 Chicago: Biographical Publishing Company Page 297 JOHN BENNETT , who is engaged in general farming and stock-raising on section 17, Brighton Township, where he owns one hundred and seventy-seven acres of highly improved land, has made his home upon that farm since 1853. He is therefore entitled to be classed among the honored early settlers of the community. The greater part of his land has been placed under cultivation by himself and all of the buildings and improvements seen thereon stand as monuments to his thrift and enterprise. As Mr. Bennett is well and favorably known we feel assured that his sketch will prove of interest to many of our readers. He was born in Rodenshire, Wales, in 1821, and is a son of Benjamin and Mary (Lewis) Bennett, both of whom were natives of that country and there spent their entire lives, the father dying at the age of seventy-seven years, the father dying at the age of seventy-seven years, the mother in the seventy-first year of her age. Both were members of the Baptist Church and they have four sons and four daughters living in Wales who are married and have families. Our subject is the only one who ever came to America. He grew to manhood in the usual manner of farmer lads and in 1844, having bade goodby to home and friends, he sailed from Liverpool on board the "Frank Field," which crossed the Atlantic, reaching New Orleans after seven weeks. Another week was consumed in making the trip up the Mississippi River to Alton, from whence he came to Brighton, Macoupin County, and began life in the new world as a farm laborer. His cash capital on his arrival consisted of only five dollars, a small sum with which to enter upon a business career. He entered the employ of one of the pioneers of the county, A. A. Hilyard who paid him in compensation for his services, $6 per month. Nine years he thus labored and by industry and economy at length acquired the capital with which in 1853, he purchased his present farm, then all wild land.
