Halle Berry und Judi Dench im Oscar-Rausch...
Vom rein menschlichen Standpunkt her müsste Nicole Kidman (34) den Oscar bekommen.

Halle Berry became the first black actress to win an Oscar in a lead role on Sunday and Denzel Washington became the second black man to win best actor, while "A Beautiful Mind" won the best picture award.
LOS ANGELES, March 25, 2002 — "A Beautiful Mind" won the Oscar for best picture of 2001 in ceremonies tonight in Hollywood that also included the first Oscar for a black actor in a lead role in almost four decades and the first for a black actress in a lead role in Academy Award history. "A Beautiful Mind," a romantic drama about a Princeton University mathematician who overcame schizophrenia and won a Nobel Prize also took awards for Ron Howard's direction, Jennifer Connelly's supporting performance and Akiva Goldsman's script. Although beset in recent weeks by charges about liberties taken in telling the story of the Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., "A Beautiful Mind" nevertheless managed to dominate the 74th annual awards ceremonies. Mr. Nash was in the audience.

88 Attend our Beardie Bounce-In Weekend with at least 63 Beardies and 7 Beardie Guests by Libby Myers-Buhite Every year one of our most eagerly anticipated events is the Beardie Bounce-In. This year was no exception! We even decided to made a two day affair of it, with the Bounce-In proper on Saturday and a Herding "A" Match and Instinct Test on Sunday. Therefore, it was with great joy that we held our summer party in Elk Grove at Starfleet Agility, the spacious dog-friendly home of Marj and Bruce Vincent, both Aussie owners, Beardie Agility trainers, and well-respected NADAC judges, who had hosted our annual Introduction to Agility in March of this year. We so appreciated their gracious hospitality and loved their new site so much, that we quickly made plans. Bruce and Marj promised us a barbecue lunch and motorhome hook-ups for our long distance members, as well as lots of shade, picnic tables under the trees, wading pools, hoses, enclosed running areas and an agility arena for a demo. What more could we want! Thinking back over previous themes for our Bounce-Ins, such as our "Rescue" Bounce-In hosted last year in Sausalito by Barbara and Jack Claxton, Beach Parties in Santa Cruz, and "A" Matches at Lonetree Park, we decided that this year we would have a "Performance" Bounce-In. Sharon Prassa, Iris Berry, Jack Buhite, and I reflected upon the proper balance between play, entertainment, and the chance to earn both the CGC and HIC titles. Lisa Voss masterfully organized our first silent auction, which earned $924 for our club treasury! Thanks, Lisa!

    The Canine Good Citizen Test
"I'll Count to Three and We'll Jump Off!"
The Canine Good Citizen Test is a certification program that tests dogs in simulated everyday situations in a relaxed atmosphere. It identifies and rewards dogs that have the training and demeanor to be reliable family members as well as good-standing community members. All dogs passing the CGC Test receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. Iris Berry, one of our NCBCF members, administered the Canine Good Citizen Test the morning of our Bounce-In. Iris has been actively involved in every aspect of dog training for over 50 years and currently has a partnership in the Vivid School of Obedience in Fresno, CA, where the emphasis is on Competitive Obedience. Besides Obedience, Iris conducts puppy classes and trains all breeds for Tracking, Agility, Flyball, and Herding. She is particularly interested in Therapy Work. We are incredibly lucky to have someone of Iris' insight and expertise offering us this opportunity! This is what Iris wrote after 18 participated in and passed the test: "I want to thank all of the Beardies and their handlers who participated in the CGC test at the Beardie Bounce In.

Three black actors nominated for Oscars
    By JUDITH EGERTON
The Courier-Journal "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," starring Elijah Wood, got the most nominations, 13. Last year's magical blockbuster "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" failed to conjure up a single Oscar nomination in the major categories yesterday. And, surprisingly, veteran actor Gene Hackman, who portrayed a loopy, irresponsible father in the "The Royal Tenenbaums," and Tilda Swinton, who played a frightened mother in "The Deep End," also were missing from the list. Billy Bob Thornton, meanwhile, who played three very different roles in movies released last year, really was "The Man Who Wasn't There." And where was Jamie Foxx, who was outstanding in a supporting role as a flawed and excitable Bundini Brown in "Ali"? There are always omissions, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did get some things right this year. After years of ignoring performances by black actors, the Academy members recognized three with nominations Halle Berry, Will Smith and Denzel Washington. It's the first time three black actors have competed in the lead acting categories since 1972, when Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson were nominated for "Sounder" and Diana Ross competed for "Lady Sings the Blues."

Usually confined to winning in Supporting categories and rarely at that African-Americans returned to the Leading races in a big way. Halle Berry's emotional acceptance remains firmly in the Heartwarming Oscar Moments Hall of Fame, despite later allegations that her crying jag was a performance that rivaled the one that got her the award (for the record, I think her tears were genuine). The acting nominations for Will Smith, Denzel Washington and Berry didn't represent a first it was actually the second time three African-American actors received leading nominations in the same year. In 1972, Diana Ross ( Lady Sings the Blues ) and Cicely Tyson ( Sounder ) competed in the Best Actress race, and Paul Winfield ( Sounder ) was nominated for Best Actor. They all went home empty-handed. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring had the most nominations 13 with A Beautiful Mind trailing with eight nods. At the end of the evening just who was the real "winner" remained a matter of opinion. Mind won four awards overall, including Best Director and Picture, but

    Countdown to the Oscars
    By Amy Diaz
Hippopress.com Ah, Oscar night: where talent and hard work are rewarded with a catty comment from Joan Rivers and a five-second close up before the guy with the most lavish marketing campaign is declared the winner. While the real fun of the self-indulgencepalooza is in the pageantry (the fashions, the rare unscripted acceptance speech and, of course, the commercials), let's pretend for a minute that it is about the movies. Here are my best actor and actress predictions for Hollywood's big night: Best Actor: Denzel Washington, Training Day; Russell Crowe, A Beautiful Mind; Sean Penn, I Am Sam; Tom Wilkinson, In the Bedroom; Will Smith, Ali.
Who Will Win: Russell Crowe, A Beautiful Mind. Don't ask me why, but people love this freaking movie. And Training Day? What is that about? Washington (also a strong contender for a statue in this category) seemed to be having a blast chewing scenery as a bad guy, but how is that Oscar-caliber?
Who Should Win: Tom Wilkinson, In the Bedroom. I don't quite understand all the adulation this movie has received either but that doesn't take away from the powerful yet restrained performance by Wilkinson as a grieving father. Smith in Ali runs an extremely close second, hurt only by the fact that his movie as a whole (with its too-long-by-45-minutes screen time and its occasionally shaky supporting cast) isn't up to the level of In the Bedroom.
