Alfred Bester "...writing can't be taught; it can be mastered only through trial and error, and the more errors the better. Youngsters have a lot of damned bad writing to get out of their systems before they can find their way." After growing up on Manhattan Island, Alfred Bester attended the University of Pennsylvania where he sold several short stories to Thrilling Wonder Stories in the early 1940s. He then embarked on a career as a scripter for comics, radio, and (later) television. Bester was also a librettist, having studied music in college. While doing this, Bester's day job was working on such classic characters as Batman, Nick Carter, Charlie Chan, Tom Corbett, The Shadow, and Superman. Bester wrote the original Green Lantern oath and created the villains, Solomon Grundy and Vandal Savage. In the 1950s, after a bummer of a career turn in television, Bester returned to prose, publishing a number of short stories, "Fondly Fahrenheit," and two brilliant novels

They started giving out Hugo Awards back in 1953. By then science fiction had become a pervasive part of popular culture and, like all institutions, required ratings and accolades. There were many choices for the best novel award that year: Arthur C. Clarke's eerie Childhood's End , Frederick Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth's satire The Space Merchants , and Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 . These were all great novels, and progressive ones for the time, but the award was given to Alfred Bester for his first novel The Demolished Man because... HE CAME FROM THE FUTURE! He arrived at the ceremony by teleportation, stepped forward to the podium, accepted his award, and was gone. (There were rumors of a time machine. There were no little green men - he never writes about them.) The audience gasped. It was a real showstopper. "Of course," they said, "how else could we have explained him? What speed! What flash! What style! And besides, he had the best props." A multifaceted narrative that combined Freudian conceits, Joycean wordplay, and experimental typography, The Demolished Man was more sophisticated, and definitely sexier, than most of its contemporaries - a stagnant, conformist heap of macho heroic tales, staid "hard" science fiction, and cheesy space operas that looked forward with nearsighted eyes. A dark and stormy novel, it is a cat and mouse detective story set in a world where a group of telepaths, called Espers, maintain law and order. Ben Reich (heavy on the reich) does the unthinkable: he commits murder in a world where guns are museum pieces and no criminal is hidden. His attempts to evade the Esper detective Lincoln Powell take us through a decadent, noir 24th century New York into space, never more than a page away, and back again, finally ending in a psychic shoot out.

Alfred Bester The Pi Man Alfred Bester published fourteen science fiction stories between 1939 and 1942, mostly in Campbell's magazines. He left the field to work in comics and then in radio drama, returned to sf in 1950 and published only twelve more short stories and two novels before 1960. Those novels The Demolished Man (1953) and The Stars My Destination (1956) and those few stories made him for many the premier science fiction writer of that decade. In fact, in the 1970s, The Stars My Destination was still generally considered the best sf novel ever written. His 1950s work was symbolic of the new styles of sf championed by Galaxy and The Magazine of Fantasy Science Fiction; none of his stories appeared in Astounding. "The one word most symbolic of science fiction is, of course, 'extrapolation,'" he said in his collection, Starlight (1976), and defined it as "The continuation of a trend, either increasing, decreasing or steady-state, to its culmination in the future. The only constraint is the limit set by the logic of the universe." Note that he does not mention science. This is not exactly what Campbell meant when he used the term extrapolation, and Bester's usage is slippery enough to permit much more of the fantastic (and little or no overt science). Elsewhere, he said, "I'm not much interested in extrapolating science and technology; I merely use extrapolation as a means of putting people into new quandaries which produce colorful pressures and conflicts." His example was enormously influential. Nearly every ambitious young sf writer of the 1960s, certainly all the New Wave writers, from Brian W. Aldiss to Samuel R. Delany, from Michael Moorcock to Roger Zelazny, revered his work. Twenty years ago, it would have been surprising that any of his books be out of print, as they all are today.

Late Bester resembles Kurt Vonnegut's and Philip Dick's work but in the end is unique, in part because of Bester's superb language. In "Fondly Fahrenheit," he is almost Joycean in his repetitious, singsong account of a schizophrenic android and his schizophrenic owner on a killing rampage. "Oddy and Id" is about the new ruler of the world, who means to be good and kind but whose id distorts his conscious desires horribly, rather as ours do for all of us. Bester liked time travel but couldn't do it straight: in "Disappearing Act," shell-shocked veterans keep disappearing into previous times, but previous times that exist only in their minds. In the brilliant "Hobson's Choice," a world in the midst of nuclear war is still gaining population because of time travelers from the future; to them, the horrible present seems romantic. Bester is renowned for two classic sf novels, The Demolished Man and The Stars My Destination ; all his manic stories, nicely edited by Robert Silverberg, are most welcome.
