BESTER, ALFRED Born in 2189, Stephen Kevin Dexter lost his parents, Telepath Resistance leaders Matthew and Fiona Dexter, after a final assault on their headquarters organized by Psi Corps director Kevin Vacit (Fiona's father). Vacit named the infant Alfred Bester, after his favourite 20th Century science fiction author, and adopted him as a true child of Psi Corps ( The Corps is Mother, The Corps is Father , the novel Dark Genesis ; see also the comic The Psi Corps and You! ). Rated P12, high enough to become a Psi Cop, Bester has devoted his life to the cause of protecting his own kind, determined to distinguish telepaths as being far superior to "mundanes". He is very well versed in matters literary and philosophical ( Ship of Tears Moments of Transition ), mainly thanks to his tutelage by Psi Cop Dr Sandoval Bey (the novel Deadly Relations ). For a while he would willingly volunteer for "deathbed scans" - scanning the minds of those about to die, his mind being with those that do "pass beyond" ( The Paragon of Animals Deadly Relations ). Such is his fierce loyalty to telepaths that he conspired to assassinate Psi Corps Director Johnston (a normal, and Vacit's successor) due to fears his people are being abused by normals in power.

Bester, Alfred
  • The Demolished Man
    • Hugo winner from the 1950's, this one is pretty tough to find, but it is worth looking for. This is a murder/mystery story where we know who's guilty beforehand (in fact, EVERYONE knows who's guilty, so the story is about a scramble for proof). Complicating matters is a caste system of telepaths in a somewhat-futuristic society, so the search for proof and the plot complications always occur on multiple levels. The story is not dated at all, and it shows me that Bester is certainly a good writer. I'm not sure how this scored so high on the top 100 list, but it is all right.
  • The Stars My Destination
    • Another Bester book high up on the Top 100, so I thought I'd give it a look when I found it at a used book store (it's HARD to find!). This book feels like a cross between "The Great Gatsby" and "Dune". On the one hand, you have the story of an outcast who has some weird, unknown power that makes him a threat to the establishment, then you have the interaction between the protagonist, Gully Foyle, and the society of super-rich in Bester's future. Foyle adventures are pretty interesting and Bester's style is an interesting change from most of today's SF authors, though the background (war within the solar system) and the plot device (revenge) are familiar.

The Demolished Man! The Stars My Destination! Fondly Fahrenheit. biography Alfred Bester was born in Manhattan in 1913, the city which appears in much of his writing, which itself is urban and urbane, reflecting New York's grandeur and multiplicity. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, gave law school a try, got married in 1936, and then began his long writing career. A childhood spent reading fairy tales, H. G. Wells, and the then new magazine Amazing Quarterly naturally led him to attempt to write science fiction. His first story, "The Broken Axiom," published in Thrilling Wonder Stories in 1939, won him the prize in the magazine's short story contest. He published about a dozen stories, few of which have been collected, and disappeared for the first time from science fiction.
In 1942, he began writing for comics, which were just getting their start, working on popular titles such as Batman, Superman, and the Green Lantern, where he invented the Green Lantern Oath and the famous villain Solomon Grundy. A few years later he moved into radio, writing for Charlie Chan, The Shadow, and many other programs; he even directed one for awhile. When television came around he tried that too and came to hate it; he wrote about the experience in his first mainstream novel, the satirical Who He?, also published as The Rat Race, which came out in 1953.

Virtual Unrealities: The Short Fiction of Alfred Bester
by Alfred Bester
After reading The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester, it was with pleasure that I now dived into some of the short fiction he wrote. Virtual Unrealities gathers together some of his best short fiction, or so it is claimed by the editors of the book. Overall, the book is definitely a collection of stories that only Bester could have written. While some of the stories have somewhat thin plots and characters, the overall atmosphere of the stories is definitely Bester's: sharp, short emotional sentences that will 'jab' at your emotions. The stories featured in this collection are:
  • "Disappearing Act" which reminds me very strongly of Bester's The Stars My Destination. In a future America that is fully militarised to protect "The American Way", a group of war-shocked soldiers began to exhibit strange powers. Unfortunately, the only way to solve the problem is to use the skills of a certain type of person that may be difficult to find. "Oddy and Id" is a rather strange story about a rather strange person who appears to have all the luck. But is he an angel or a devil? Throughout the story, the narrator says the boy is a devil, but he appears to be an angle to the rest of the world. Which is correct?
