Format: Paperback, 88pp.
ISBN: 0679766065
Publisher: Knopf Alfred A
Pub. Date: December 1998 Review by Dean Henning The End of Desire consists of 40 poems. Jill Bialosky was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She studied at Ohio University and received a Master of Arts Degree from the Writing Seminars at the Johns Hopkins University, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa Writers Workshop. Her poems have been published in many magazines, including Partisan Review and TriQuarterly A three line quote from a poem by Wallace Stevens introduces the mood of her poems, life and death. "I was of three minds"
"Like a tree"
"In which there are three blackbirds." The Poem Cornfields introduces the poems. It is a scene that I find touching and can easily visualize. A farmer kneeling, his wife home sorting the laundry and a child home from school. The reader is able to understand the hard work the farmer and his wife must endure. Her book is divided into three sections: the house, the reckless heart and winter. The first section, house, is a collection of ten poems called Fathers in the snow that is in memory of her father. Fathers in the snow is the title of the first poem. It is about Jill and her sister. After reading the poem, I could see Jill raking leaves and spilling them over her sisters' body.

New Writing, New Ways to Meaning By Barbara Hoffert with Ann Burns 10/1/2002
Features > Ask any avid reader; first novelists are all the rage. Part of the pleasure they afford is the sense of discovery, that edgy thrill of knowing one has stumbled upon a different sort of writer who could develop into a major talent. In addition, the best of these fledgling authors offer is a fresh perspective that revivifies our view of the world. Notes Jonathan Safran Foer, author of the acclaimed Everything Is Illuminated , 'The reason authors are concerned with saying things in a way that has never been said before is that it's the only way to give certain things meaning. The more people talk, the less words mean, so you have to find new ways of talking.' The 25 authors on this list, who represent the best of last spring's debuts, have all found new ways of talking. So listen up!

Subterranean: Poems
Jill Bialosky
Alfred A Knopf
Hardcover 88 pages November 2001
Shawnee tribal leader Jim Great Elk Waters calls readers to affirm the rich possibilities of this great land we call America. Despite his people's tragic history, they have held to the truths and traditions that make them Shawnee: "We are the total sum of all our ancestors." Click here for more on View from the Medicine Lodge In Jill Bialosky's second collection, Subterranean , the poems are filled with images of motherhood and the idea of the "lost" child. Often utilizing the Demeter and Persephone myth, Bialosky views the situation from both sides, the mournful mother and the tragic girl, embodying both loss and temptation. Quite beautifully, the poet examines the dual states of motherhood, both having a child and losing one. The early poems in the book focus primarily on loss. In "Torture," the speaker faces the pain of miscarriage, admitting "by then/there was no baby/to bring home/and we could no longer/ live in the place/ she was conceived." In "Shadow Life," she mourns the "child between us,/the embryonic/nut floating/lost and unattached." In "Pumpkin Picking," "it's as if the souls of our lost children have entered this graveyard/ where in a month's time the fields will be picked over, pumpkins splayed/ open, smashed, left to rot." Like Persephone in the myth, the child represents "the dark un-/tamed place, like thicket in a neglect-/ed wood where I fall to after each new/ loss". In "Landscape with Child," the poet announces, "Here I am for once on the other side." Even mothers who have their children, however, are in danger. In "Thanksgiving Primer," the poem expresses guilt over leaving her child breifly unattended and in danger, much like Demeter.

Alhadeff, Gini. Diary of a djinn. New York: Pantheon Books, 2003.

Diary of a Djinn takes the narrator and her alter ego, the playful and watchful djinn, on a series of adventures from the glamorous rigors of a Milan fashion house in the 1980s, where the narrator is a reluctant muse to the designer, to 1990s Manhattan.
F ANDERSON Science Fiction
Anderson, Kevin J. Hidden empire. New York: Aspect/Warner Books, c2002.

The three branches of humanity consider themselves the lords of creation, but when they discover a machine that can convert giant gas planets into life-giving suns, they believe the universe is theirs to colonize, but the result of their new technology is more hideous than they ever thought possible.
F BAKER
Baker, Nicholson. A box of matches: a novel. 1st ed. New York: Random House, c2003.

In daily entries full of casual observations, tangents, and stream-of-consciousness candor, the novel slowly reveals a quietly obsessive narrator, who maintains that "what you do first thing can influence your whole day." Emmett holds forth on such things as sock holes, picking up underwear with one's toes, his fireplace, Fidel the ant (lone survivor of an ant farm), the proper way to use soap, peeing in the dark . . and other commonplaces. (A compilation from independent bookstores) "Ours was like a house under snow ... waiting for someone to dig us out," Anna Crane recalls upon returning to the quaint Ohio town where a dysfunctional mother and the death of her father weighed heavy on her childhood. Anna, the introspective narrator of poet Jill Bialosky's first novel, "House Under Snow," delves eloquently into her memories, but it takes some concentration to plow through the disorganized and repetitive passages. This writing style no doubt stems from Bialosky's background as an acclaimed poet, although her beautiful prose left this reader confused. Jumping among snippets of her past, Anna recalls growing up with her two sisters and her unstable mother, Lily. After the death of her husband, Lily floats in an oblivious haze of alcohol and grief while her neglected children grasp at anything to escape. Anna's consuming relationship with her high school boyfriend, Austin, provides some respite from her mother's demanding neediness.
