WELLESLEY, Mass. The Academy of American Poets has selected Professor Frank Bidart as the recipient of the Wallace Stevens Award. Given annually, the $150,000 award recognizes outstanding and proven mastery in the art of poetry. "His work has been, from the start, remarkable in its disdain for the soothing, the sentimental, the facile, the partial. He is, in the feeling of our jury, one of the great poets of our time." A member of the Wellesley faculty since 1973, Bidart teaches poetry workshops and 20th century poetry. His collections of poetry include Desire (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1997), which received the 1998 Bobbitt Prize for Poetry from the Library of Congress and the Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Prize and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award;

In 11 chapters richly illustrated with vintage and contemporary images, the book details the 125-year development of the park-like composition of meadows, woods, and buildings sited on the shore of a characteristic New England glacial lake. "The book is a first. No college in the United States has been so carefully delineated by landscape and architectural historians. And no college more deserves to be," said Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz '63, professor of American Studies at Smith College, in the book's preface.

The new work has been called "an impressive second outing" following her well-received 1994 debut, Arabian Jazz. Arabian Jazz is a "comic novel about Arab-Americana," and similarly, Crescent is "a timely fiction about Iraqui intellectuals in Los Angeles..." that stylistically "...blends the whimsy of Scheherazade-style storytelling with the urgency of contemporary politics." The central character's name is Sirine, a 39 year old "spinsterish" woman who is a chef in a Middle Eastern restaurant. And "she still sleeps in her childhood bed, in the home of her kindly uncle; when she was nine, Sirine's parents (Iraqui father and American mother) were killed on the job as Red Cross Relief workers, and Uncle's home, filled with Arab scholars from the University where he teaches, has been her haven ever since." The story and Sirine's life takes a turn when she begins an affair with her Uncle's colleague, literature professor Hanif, an "exiled Arab" faced with the decision of returning to Baghdad.

Frank Bidart
What's American About American Form? Modernism in English poetry was the creation of Americans, and Ezra Pound was the central figure in this. You know his famous assertions: "Make it new," "Literature is news that stays news." Even in that very famous and influential essay, "Tradition and the Individual Talent," T.S. Eliot talks about an ideal order made by all the works of art of the past, and that to enter that order you have to do something that's new. The premise is that to make a poem that truly joins those works that constitute what people understand as the heritage of literature, you have to be new. The Film Form and The Film Sense , he was arguing that the importance of montage proceeds from the same principle, and he too links it to the nature of the Chinese language. I think all of us on the panel, when we first heard about the panel on form, rued the prospect of one more rehearsal of the arguments about free verse versus formal verse. That's a barren distinction. The modernists did not understand their project as constituting a rebellion against formal verse, or form itself. It was a far more complicated and fundamental issue. They had the consciousness of making a revolution, and the fact that our nation is founded in revolution, founded in transgression, seems to me a fundamental, a recurrent theme in America's use of form. I think you can argue that another major innovation happened with confessional poetry, both through Allen Ginsberg in

MONDAY, MARCH 26, 2001 8 P.M. Alley Theatre
615 Texas Avenue Anne Carson's unique fusion of Greek classics with 20th century lifeincluding Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse (a 1998 New York Times Notable Book), Plainwater, and her latest collection, Men in the Off Hours has earned high praise. "Anne Carson is, for me, the most exciting poet writing today," wrote Michael Ondaatje. "Carson writes in language any poet would kill for: sensuous and funny, poignant, musical and tender," wrote Ruth Padel in The New York Times Book Review. Her honors include a Lannan Literary Award for Poetry and her selection as a 2000 MacArthur Fellow, the "genius" award. She currently teaches classics at McGill University in Canada. According to Library Journal, Frank Bidart "truly expresses the civilization of which he is a part; not merely a witness or memoirist, he accumulates and broods over the collective experience of Western culture and deepens that culture with his own response." Reflecting on his book, In the Western Night: Collected Poems 1965-90
