Bierce, Ambrose Gwinett 1842-1914?, American satirist, journalist, and short-story writer, b. Meigs co., Ohio. After distinguished Civil War service, he turned to journalism. In San Francisco he wrote for the News-Letter, of which he became editor in 1868. He soon established a reputation as a satirical wit, and his squibs and epigrams were much quoted. In London, from 1872 to 1875, he wrote for the magazine Fun and finished three books, including Cobwebs from an Empty Skull (1874). After his return to San Francisco, he wrote for the Argonaut, edited the Wasp (1881-86), and was a columnist for Hearst's Sunday Examiner (1887-96); his writings in the Examiner made him the literary arbiter of the West Coast. Later he was Washington correspondent for the American and a contributor to Cosmopolitan. His collection of sardonic definitions, The Cynic's Word Book (1906), was retitled The Devil's Dictionary in 1911. The short stories of Bierce were collected in such volumes as

The Devil's Dictionary was begun in a weekly paper in 1881, and was continued in a desultory way at long intervals until 1906. In that year a large part of it was published in covers with the title The Cynic's Word Book, a name which the author had not the power to reject or happiness to approve. To quote the publishers of the present work:
"This more reverent title had previously been forced upon him by the religious scruples of the last newspaper in which a part of the work had appeared, with the natural consequence that when it came out in covers the country already had been flooded by its imitators with a score of 'cynic' books The Cynic's This, The Cynic's That, and The Cynic's t'Other. Most of these books were merely stupid, though some of them added the distinction of silliness. Among them, they brought the word 'cynic' into disfavor so deep that any book bearing it was discredited in advance of publication."
Meantime, too, some of the enterprising humorists of the country had helped themselves to such parts of the work as served their needs, and many of its definitions, anecdotes, phrases and so forth, had become more or less current in popular speech. This explanation is made, not with any pride of priority in trifles, but in simple denial of possible charges of plagiarism, which is no trifle. In merely resuming his own the author hopes to be held guiltless by those to whom the work is addressed enlightened souls who prefer dry wines to sweet, sense to sentiment, wit to humor and clean English to slang.

    By Stacey Ann Singletary
Student, University of North Carolina at Pembroke
Born on June 24, 1842, in Meigs County, Ohio, Ambrose Gwinnette Bierce was one of thirteen children of Marcus Aurelius and Laura Bierce. At seventeen, Bierce attended the Kentucky Military Institute and two years later he served in the Union army of the Civil War. It was in the war that Bierce discovered death and destruction. Bierce transformed these Civil War experiences into powerful short stories such as "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and "Chickamauga." Bierce enlisted with the Ninth Indiana Infantry and fought in one of the first battles of the Civil War at Philippi, West Virginia. Only three months later did Bierce begin to battle with the effects of war as he carried one of his dying comrades across a battlefield. In 1862, the Civil War heightened, and Bierce was involved in several bloody battles at Shiloh, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and Kenesaw Mountain. As Bierce's participation in the war increased, so did his acts of bravery. Thus, he rose through the ranks to become a sergeant, then a lieutenant, and finally positioned as a topographical engineer. After receiving a severe head wound in June of 1864, his brother, Albert, nurtured Bierce back to health. Despite his second command of a leave of absence, Bierce reenlisted with the Fourth Army Corps. He was finally discharged in the spring of 1865. Bierce's literary career began shortly after his dismissal (DLB 74: 22-23).

San Francisco Circle . These, men were the leading lights of local color, but what an amazing parade of writers as characters passed through The City. The most familiar names include Ambrose Bierce, Ina Coolbrith, Joaquin Miller, and Prentice Mulford. ...
Ambrose Bierce cut quite a different figure. Ever sneering at Victorian poetry and all lofty sentiments, Bierce was a journalist who could wield a bitter, abusive prose that maintained the rhetorical stance of vituperative, frontal attack. In 1868, he took over the "Town Crier" column of the News Letter, a San Francisco newspaper which welcomed his relentless attacks and satiric jests. Odd as it may seem, Bierce got along famously with Bret Harte. Harte accepted for the Overland portions of what would become Bierce's Grizzly Papers, and it was Bierce, for better or for worse, who persuaded Harte to retrieve "The Heathen Chinee" from the wastebasket and print this satirical poem in the Overland.
As the century progressed, the San Francisco-based brand of local color not only moved from theme to background, but it was indeed more popular as a novelty, more popular the farther away from California's shores it was read, studied, and performed. By the early 1880s, Harte's uplifting stories seemed sentimental and dated. As other parts of the West became more settled, a new generation of local color writers emerged, a generation that pushed local color in a decidedly realistic direction. This group included Mary Hallock Foote (Colorado and Idaho), Bill Nye (Wyoming), Alfred Henry Lewis (the Southwest), and, of course, Hamlin Garland (the northern Plains). But the shaping influences of Bret Harte and Mark Twain can be perceived in all of them.
