COMICS AND THE GREAT SCIENCE FICTION PULPS
by Michael D. Fraley INTRODUCTION "His body had literally expanded into a great figure of such physical power and beauty as we had not imagined could exist! He was many inches taller and broader, his skin a clear pink, every limb and muscle molded as though by some master sculptor. . . . . (His) homely, good-humored features were gone, replaced by a face who perfectly-cut features held the stamp of immense intellectual power that shone almost overpoweringly from the clear dark eyes." T he above quote is from a critical moment in a story from the 1930's. A normal man steps into a booth, and the man who emerges is The Man of Tomorrow, a man who is fifty million years more advanced, physically and mentally, than any other human alive. Is this Jerry Siegel's 1930's version of Clark Kent transforming into Superman ? It could be, but it isn't. The quote you've just read is from Edmond Hamilton's

Internships, co-ops provide experience By Tricia Couture Assistant News Editor For students that want a taste of their career choice before graduation or to spice up their resumes with real-world experience, an internship or co-op experience are ingredients to a successful job search after graduation. For those students who fear they will be asking, "Would you like fries with that?" all summer, an internship provides a more stimulating work environment. "More money is paid [at an internship or co-op] than at most part-time jobs," said Sarah Kersey-Otto, manager of Career Planning. "Secondly, you get hands-on experience. Employers want someone who has been in the field. [An internship] provides references, networking, benefits from these people and academic credit." Internships give students scrambling to make a career decision some direction. "[Internships] definitely add to knowledge base, bring the classroom to life and enhance what students have learned," said Lynn Lee of management placement services at Eastern's Career Services. "Students take an internship and learn that it's not what they want to do. It [an internship] answers questions in students' minds." For students worried they might not find a job after graduation, internships and co-ops often lead to a permanent job after graduation. "The employer gets to take a look at you, the quality of work you do professionally and how you fit in the environment and assess your effectiveness [prior to a job offer]," Kersey-Otto said. "You are a known quantity at that point. They [employers] train you for less money." When applying for internships, students should consider if the flavor of the internship is right for them. "[Factors are] geographic location, a small or large company, if the job is paid or if there are other benefits, training programs, number of people you'll be in contact with and the professional level of work," Kersey-Otto said. "One of my concerns is "Is this going to help professionally or am I going to be filing?" While at Eastern, students can take advantage of the free assistance Career Services offers, placing students in pre-professional internship and co-op programs. "If students sign up for a co-op it's an automatic way to refer people out, automatically send out resumes," Kersey-Otto said. "There's no charge, just sign up. We work with them [students] one-on-one and help them look through binders." "We have contacts from employers looking for interns," Lee said. There are a few small differences between the co-op and pre-professional internship programs. "The difference is slight," Kersey-Otto said. "Generally speaking, an internship is through an academic department, is a more broad-based experience, all over in setting and is paid or unpaid. A co-op is run through Career Services, has a narrower focus, a specific job title and must be paid." "An internship is pre-professional work experience for any level and for any major or interest. A co-op is different in that it is for juniors and seniors and is related to the major," Lee said. Students working at jobs related to their major might be able to count the hours they are spending to earn college credit. "A lot of people use it [co-ops and internships] when they need extra-credit hours or when they need them for work they're already doing," Kersey-Otto said. Today, in the age of point-and-click, the Internet offers a recipe that makes searching for an internship or co-op experience easier than ever, offering a quick, easy way to access information. "Students from other parts of the country want an internship at home," Lee said. "Students want to go to other areas of the country. It [the Internet] has more up-to-date information." The Internet allows students freedom when surfing the Web for internships. They can search at night if they are in classes during the day, in their flannel bathrobes and fuzzy slippers or even naked while slurping down a Coke. "I think the Internet, to me, is more user-friendly," Lee said. "Things are there immediately and you [students] are not trying to run from one location to another. It just seems convenient to me. Students don't have to worry about office hours; they can use it [the Internet] day and night. More and more people are comfortable with computers." For any students caught in a chat room with 20-year-old Jane and realize later it's 45-year-old Earl, and for those who have had problems getting rid of an Internet "friend," they know not to believe everything they see on the screen. "I'd be a little bit wary about how true the information is," Kersey-Otto said. "You can't access the environment of a company, the people you'd be working with and whether or not fit is true or good," she said. "Don't put your address or phone number if posting on the Internet." In the Stone Age, before little boxes of wires made our lives easier, there were other ways of searching for internships. "Instructors are a good source of internships. I think doing informational interviews, finding out about companies and jobs is a good way to find out about interviews," Lee said. "There are books on internships and a binder with current [job] listings," Kersey-Otto said. "We have hard-copy literature on a huge number of employers. We have found some of the information is outdated but we have a binder of employer e-mail addresses that students can directly e-mail and look at Web sites." The Internet may not provide specific information needed when searching for internships. "One thing that comes to mind in the files, particularly with contact people, there is more specific information than a Web site might give you. The combination of the two is the best bet," Lee said. Students looking for an internship are advised to start looking as soon possible. "I think one big tip is to start early," Lee said. "Students come in now looking for a winter-semester job, and we can do that, but it's harder now. "For those looking for a spring/summer internship, start looking in February to see who's out there and who to choose from," she said. Making good grades is a way to get more than scholarship money or money from parents. "Most employers are looking for a strong GPA," Lee said. "Most employers are not looking for lower than a 3.0. For most [employers], that's the cutoff." Employers also look for well-rounded students and those with previous summer jobs that may not be related to the major, as well, Lee said. Think about an internship the next time you say "May I take your order please?" There are many advantages for college students to get an internship before graduation. "The biggest thing is to find out your place," Kersey-Otto said. "You'll have a greater knowledge of the field and that's hard to get anywhere else and an internship is helpful that way."
