Elizabeth Bishop's poems were always admired for the purity and precision of her descriptions, and now readers have come to see how, even in her early poems, the attention to external detail reveals an internal emotional realm. Bishop's early works use surrealism and imagism to create a new reality in which she minimizes the reference to self in poetry, but her later poems become more autobiographical and more concerned with a quest for personal identity. Academy of American Poets Hear Bishop describe an "egg of fire" disrupting ancient owls, a glistening armadillo, and a baby rabbit in "The Armadillo" at the Academy of American Poets' Bishop site. An essay/exhibit, "Life Studies: American Poetry from T. S. Eliot to Allen Ginsberg," explains why Bishop is considered "one of our most abundant poets." ELIZABETH BISHOP, 1911-1979, American author
Finding-Aid for the Elizabeth Bishop Papers
Papers 1963-1970
42 items Access: Open Elizabeth Bishop was not only a popular poet, she was also highly acclaimed by critics and poets alike. Although she produced only five collections of poetry during her lifetime, she won major awards for four of them. Bishop received the Pulitzer Prize in 1956 for Poems: North and South [and] A Cold Spring , the National Book Award in 1969 for The Complete Poems , and a National Book Critic Circle Award in 1976 for Geography III . Since her death on 1979, Bishop has been the focus of an increasing amount of research and the Washington University Collection has been featured in a number of those studies. The Bishop Papers consist of correspondence between Bishop and British poet Anne Stevenson. At the time of correspondence (1963-1970), Stevenson was working on her critical biography, Elizabeth Bishop (1966), the first such work written. Her correspondence with Bishop became a primary source for Stevenson, and Bishop's letters are filled with biographical details, thoughts on her work, and comments on the current state of literature. Stevenson's relationship with Bishop evolved into a close friendship, with Bishop acting as a mentor to the British poet. The Bishop-Stevenson correspondence is a fascinating personal look at this major American author in which she, perhaps for the first time, reflects on her life as a poet.

and Robert Lowell. Bishop's Complete Poems (1969) won the National Book Award in 1970.
Commonplace objects and occurrences had unusual symbolic meanings for Bishop, and many of her poems take the form of meditations on external objects and events. Her linguistic precision and focus on the external world notwithstanding, Bishop's work carries strong emotions. Travel is a major theme in her verse, and in many of her poems, Bishop highlights the sense of strangeness that can underlie even ordinary events. She also wrote short stories, many for The New Yorker magazine. Bishop's works include Questions of Travel (1965), a volume of poetry; Brazil (1967), a travel book; An Anthology of 20th Century Brazilian Poetry (1972), which she edited; and Geography III (1976), her last collection of poems.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Bishop's poems are highly accessible and do not present problems for most mature readers. I have found that more students come to hear the poetry of Bishop when they commit some of her work to memory. I often challenge students to find the poetry first and then discuss the theme. This encourages them to begin to find relationships among form, language, and topic.
Significant Form, Style, or Artistic Conventions
Bishop's voice communicates rather directly to beginning readers of poetry. What is difficult to convey is the depth of expression and learning evidenced in these poems. Her work shows not merely experience but wisdom, the ability to reflect upon one's life, and that makes some poems difficult for younger readers. For younger women readers, Bishop often seems old-fashioned, fussy, or detached. This perplexed the poet in that she felt that she had lived her life as an independent woman. This "generation gap" often provides an interesting class opportunity to talk about historical, cultural, and class assumptions in literatureand how those issues affect us as readers. Students are often quite taken by Bishop's regard for animals. With the spirit of a Darwinian naturalist, the poet is willing to accord the natural world intrinsic rights and purposes. The dream-fusion world of the Man-Moth provides many students with an opportunity to discover this avenue into Bishop's world.
