"When it gets dark enough you can see the stars " - A Christmas Message from Bishop Michael Malone
There is always a stark contrast between the message of Christmas and the world as it really is. Christmas 2002 is fast approaching and our world seems clouded by ominous signs. With all that is happening around us and to us, life feels quite fragile. There is a certain bleakness and tension in our midst, an underlying anxiety and vulnerability. Our year has been marked by the tragedy of the Bali bombings which shocked and numbed us. At the same time, most of our farmers have suffered a long and severe drought. Devastating bushfires have impacted long before their expected date. We seem paralysed by the increasing threat of terrorism both overseas and here on our own soil. And to top it all off, we stand yet again on the brink of war, this time possibly against Iraq. The people of Australia will celebrate Christmas in the shadow of these experiences.

Bishop Michael Malone Responds to Newspaper Reports: Shares in Casino
The Most Rev Michael Malone, Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle has confirmed that his diocese made no conscious decision to gain a 0.5% share in the Cairns Reef Casino as reported in The Sun Herald (24.5.98) and The Newcastle Herald (25.5.98).
Bishop Michael Malone is not available for interview this week due to his participation in the annual conference of Australian Catholic Bishops currently taking place in Sydney, but states:
"The Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle made no conscious decision to take up a 0.5% share in the Cairns Reef Casino. As a resuIt of the Campbell's Hill motel sale in 1991, which was the former Monte Pio Orphanage, the diocese acquired shares in the Country Comfort Hotel group.
"Subsequent to these sale negotiations, the Country Comfort Hotel group bought shares in the Cairns Reef Casino over which the diocese had no control. The diocese has allowed subsequent share offers to lapse reducing its shares to 0.3%."

Founder: Bishop Michael Tierney
Bishop Michael Tierney, the founder of St. Thomas Seminary, was first and foremost a priest of the people. Bishop Tierney served as Pastor in several parishes throughout Connecticut, including St. Mary’s Church in New London, and St. Peter’s in Hartford. He was consecrated Bishop of Hartford in 1894, following the death of Bishop McFarland. With indefatigable resolve, Bishop Tierney set about creating a twentieth century diocese. The fourteen years in which he presided over the diocese witnessed an unprecedented expansion. The number of parishes grew from 98 to 167; and the clerical body increased from 204 to 342. Moreover, he strove to meet the demands of a growing immigrant population by sending seminarians to pursue part of their studies abroad where they could learn languages vital to their missions at home. Bishop Tierney helped establish homes here for the Sisters of the Holy Ghost and the Little Sisters of the Poor. He founded the “Connecticut Apostolate“, a body of diocesan priests who were unique to their time. Their duty was to give missions to non Catholics as well as to Catholics. Through the work of the Apostolate as well as by the character and deeds of the good Bishop himself, relations with non Catholics improved substantially. Lastly, Bishop Tierney founded and co-founded a number of institutions, including St. Francis Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, and St. Thomas Seminary.

The Catholic Church delivers much-needed services
By Jonathan Paye-Layleh
BBC, Monrovia The man at the centre of a row between one of Liberia's MPs and the Catholic Church is Bishop Michael Francis, an outspoken critic of the authorities.
God knows the doers
Michael Francis Bishop Francis has said that the killings, 10 years ago, of five Catholic nuns in Monrovia, were by elements of the former National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL). The rebel movement was led by incumbent President Charles Taylor and was the largest and most powerful armed group in the country's civil war which ended with the election of Taylor as President in 1997. MP Sando Johnson, himself a member of the NPFL, has denied any involvement in the killings. He in turn accused the bishop of conniving with West African peacekeepers to kill the nuns.

Thirty-fifth Anniversary - September 14, 1998
Address by Bishop Michael Ingham
Is Tolerance Enough?
New Hopes and New Obstacles to Religious Unity
The Global Ethic represents an effort by world religions to address problems together. It has stimulated many people to think about the possibilities of inter-religious cooperation to relieve the hardships of our world and to face its challenges in a spirit of partnership rather than competition. This is not an easy task, because we are not starting from scratch. Religions have a history of relationships with each other. Some of it has been hostile and violent. There are many victims of inter-religious strife, and we are surrounded by people who bear the marks of suffering in their lives and in their communities at the hands of religion. Even well- intentioned and gentle practitioners of faith in many of the traditions have been taught that partnership with other believers, dialogue and cooperation with other faiths, is a betrayal of belief, a blasphemy against God. Despite all this, there are urgent reasons to do challenge these inherited suspicions and to find new visions to overcome these historic antipathies. We are aware, as no generation before us has been aware, of the fragile nature of life on this planet. We face enormous challenges in safeguarding humanity's future, in preserving environmental integrity, in ensuring equitable and sustainable development. We know this is a spiritual task and not simply a political task because it involves the way people believe, the way they live their lives, the way they see the very nature and purpose of human existence.

Reflections on Mission 2000 Consultation
Mission Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
You stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace; so clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your name. Amen.
Kevin Wood and Philip Selkirk presented these two reports to the congregation on the 16th of May respectively. They were St. Augustine's representatives at the conference in Nice, France, along with the Rector, the Rev. Karl E. Bell, and Andy Pickersgill, a member of the Commission on the Ministry of the Baptized.
The Mission 2000 Conference
Kevin Wood
For those of you who weren't able to attend the Mission 2000 Conference in Nice, France, let me assure you the two-day experience was as intensive as it was rewarding. Over 70 people represented the eight parishes and five missions in our convocation. In all, there were native speakers from eight different language groups, including Swahili, Tagalog and Mandarin Chinese!
Despite this diversity, I found myself feeling quickly at home in the family atmosphere. The multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment was in many ways like our own congregation. Through the discussion we had together, I also came to realize that despite the differing language and location, each ministry faced similar challenges in bringing the Good News of Christ to the communities around them. We were also like-minded in our view of ministry, that we should work together in an ecumenical environment to bring the non-churched into fellowship with the Body of Christ. It was this like-mindedness that facilitated the realization of the goal of the conference so clearly stated in Bishop Jeffrey's invitation: "to recognize the ways in which the Holy Spirit has been moving powerfully in our midst, and to discern more clearly and together what God is asking of us in the next few years."

Ecumenism in Australia today
In the past 20 years, there have been a number of major events which have shaped the contemporary ecumenical movement in Australia. The first of these was the formation of the Uniting Church in Australia Another major ecumenical event in recent years was the formation of the National Council of Churches of Australia in 1994. This Council is significant, not only because of the inclusion of the Roman Catholic Church for the first time, but also because of its new constitution and its giving a new impetus to ecumenical relations on the national level. These relations have continued to deepen, and around Australia many rejoiced that at the forum this year the Lutheran Church of Australia became a full member. This same Lutheran Church achieved its own internal union within Australia only in 1965. A similar event of some significance, especially for Queensland, was the formation of

CHRISTIAN FORMATION and MINISTRY COURSE Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle BISHOP MICHAEL'S FOREWORD
to the COURSE HANDBOOK - an extract Bishop Michael Malone Historically, the Church has experienced many periods of tumultuous change. Jesus Christ himself initiated such ... change as he ... called people to a ... radical way of responding to God's presence. Since Vatican II and our own Diocesan Synod in 1992-93, we have been challenged... to empower an emerging lay leadership, to change structures which impede collaboration, to re-examine roles and question stereotypes, to be ... vigilant about the best way to proclaim God's Word .. There is a temptation to withdraw from the distress of this challenge and watch from the sidelines... Jesus Christ's example ... calls us to move beyond 'withdrawal' and 'rest' to be disciples of courage, trust and, above all, hope. I am thrilled that the Tenison Woods Education Centre (TWEC) is offering the Diocese a solid course in Parish Ministry ... The CHRISTIAN FORMATION AND MINISTRY COURSE with a good balance of knowledge, pastoral experience and spiritual/personal reflection is much-needed in the Diocese.
