22. THE CASE OF MUMIA ABU JAMAL By Terry Bisson
The Case of Mumia Abu Jamal, by terry bisson. (from New York Newsday,1995). Forever. Back to terry bisson STORY SHOWCASE Main Page.
http://www.terrybisson.com/mumia.html
The Case of Mumia Abu Jamal, by Terry Bisson (from New York Newsday In 1978, Philadelphia Mayor (and ex-police chief) Frank Rizzo blew up at a press conference, threatening what he called "the new breed" of journalists. "They [the people] believe what you write and what you say," said Rizzo, "and it's got to stop . One dayand I hope it's in my careeryou're going to have to be held responsible and accountable for what you do." What the "new breed" was doing in 1978, and is still doing today, was exposing police misconduct. A cop had been killed in a confrontation between Philadelphia police and the radical MOVE organization (the same MOVE that was fire-bombed by the city seven years later), and the police version of who shot first hadn't been accepted without question. Rizzo feared a new trend, and he was right. The trend has continued. Today, the Mollen Commission, the NYPD "party"in DC, the Rodney King case and hundreds of other local scandals have exposed the dark underside of police misconduct nationwide. Ironically, the most prominent of the "new breed" of journalists at whom Rizzo's outburst was directed is awaiting execution on Pennsylvania's Death Row, the victimmany believeof a police frame-up. Mumia Abu-Jamal began his journalism career with the Black Panther Party. The Panthers were the original "affirmative action" employer, and Mumia (then Wesley Cook) was Minister of Information for the Philadelphia chapter at age 15, writing for the national newspaper. A heady beginning for a West Philly kid. After the Panthers fell apart (helped by a stiff dose of FBI harassment) Mumia turned to broadcasting. He had the voice, the writing talent and the ambition, and by age 25, he was one of the top names in local radio, interviewing such luminaries as Jesse Jackson and the Pointer Sisters and winning a Peabody Award for his coverage of the Pope's visit. He was president of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists, called "one to watch" by Philadelphia magazine.

24. Miller Job Story
Article by writer terry bisson, subtitled How I met Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman but not Walter M. Miller, Jr.
http://www.sff.net/people/tbisson/miller.html
A CANTICLE FOR MILLER; or, How I Met Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman but not Walter M. Miller, Jr. by Terry Bisson I am a science fiction writer, a dicey business at best. In November, 1995, I got a call from Don Congdon, a literary agent I knew by reputation but had never met. Congdon's a player. He represents William Styron and Ray Bradbury, among others. He asked if I had ever heard of a book called A Canticle for Leibowitz . I said yes, I had. Who hasn't? Canticle is one of the few science fiction books not only known but read outside the field (unlike, say, Dune or Stranger in a Strange Land , which render up their pleasures only to those already attuned to the genre). A novel of nuclear anxiety written in the 1950s, it tells the story of an order of monks in the Southwest and their efforts to keep scientific knowledge alive in the new Dark Age after the "Flame Deluge" or nuclear war. Leibowitz Abbey, and the neighboring village of Sanly Bowitz, are both named after a Los Alamos scientist who became a monk, was martyred by a mob and isjust maybea saint. Leibowitz was Jewish, the joke of the title. The first major post-holocaust SF novel

From archive (archive) Subject: TALKING MAN, by Terry Bisson Keywords: contemporary fantasy, now in paperback From: howard@utastro.UUCP (The Duck) Organization: V645 Cyg Date: 26 Aug 87 04:15:12 GMT A recommendation. Terry Bisson's second novel, TALKING MAN, is out in paperback. Do yourself a favor and read it. TALKING MAN is a contemporary fantasy - that is, it has no dragons, elves, furry-toed folks, wiz- Oops. Well, it *does* have a wizard. More like a god, actually, Talking Man is the wizard who created the world, then fell in love with his creation. He runs a junkyard on a hillside in Kentucky; his taciturnity has earned him his name from his neighbors. Talking Man's disappearance at the hands of his lover/sister/nemesis Dgene leads to a pursuit by his daughter, Crystal, and her boyfriend, William Hendricks Tilden Williams, which starts off in a beautifully described "normal" Kentucky and ends up in a *very* different place, indeed. The book is about Crystal and Williams, growing up. It is also about the hidden beauty of junkyards, and cars, and even farm machinery. (Point of reference: when not under this book's spell, I consider cars at best a necessary evil and at worst a royal pain. Bisson can overcome that.) You will learn about growing tobacco plants and you will see the unforgetable triple bridge across the vast Mississippi Canyon . . . You will have a good time. In this book, as in his first (a science fiction novel called WYRLDMAKER), Bisson displays strikingly originality. Were it not for the lurking Wolfe, TALKING MAN just might have been 1986's best fantasy. Give it a try. Howard Coleman / ut-sally!utastro!howard / U. England Underway
a short story by Terry Bisson M r. Fox was, he realized afterward, with a shudder of sudden recognition like that of the man who gives a cup of water to a stranger and finds out hours, or even years later, that it was Napoleon, perhaps the first to notice. Perhaps. At least no one else in Brighton seemed to be looking at the sea that day. He was taking his constitutional on the Boardwalk, thinking of Lizzie Eustace and her diamonds, the people in novels becoming increasingly more real to him as the people in the everyday (or "real") world grew more remote, when he noticed that the waves seemed funny. "Woof?" said Anthony, in what might have been a quizzical tone. "The waves, " said Mr. Fox. "They seemwell, odd, don't they? Closer together?" "Woof." "Well, perhaps not. Could be just my imagination." Fact is, waves had always looked odd to Mr. Fox. Odd and tiresome and sinister. He enjoyed the Boardwalk but he never walked on the beach proper, not only because he disliked the shifty quality of the sand but because of the waves with their ceaseless back and forth. He didn't understand why the sea had to toss about so. Rivers didn't make all that fuss, and they were actually going somewhere. The movement of the waves seemed to suggest that something was stirring things up, just beyond the horizon. Which was what Mr. Fox had always suspected in his heart; which was why he had never visited his sister in America. "Perhaps the waves have always looked funny and I have just never noticed," said Mr. Fox. If indeed

On Sept. 11, 2001, along with millions of others, I saw airliners deliberately flown into skyscrapers.. The Boeing 767, the familiar image of peace, travel, mobility, access and modernity as beautiful as a clipper ship turned into a bomb. A bomb filled with people hurled into thousands more.
I cried out. I'm still crying.
If this is one world and it is the Sept. 11 attack was a self-inflicted wound. The Islamic suicide bombers must have shut the cockpit door and ignored the cries of terror ("Oh my God! Oh my God!") in the cabin behind them. Just as we have shut the door here and ignored the cries of the Palestinians and the millions who suffer from our actions in the Middle East and around the world. I am for globalism and world trade (if not the World Trade Organization). But in a transparent world where everyone can go everywhere and know everything, there must be at least a rough justice. Israel must close down the settlements. The United States must stop bombing Iraq and get out of Saudi Arabia. The Arab and Islamic peoples must deal with the cancer of reactionary Islamic fanaticism. We, here in the United States, can help only by sharing the world's resources more equitably; by restraining our own fanatics; by getting out of the way; by pulling out, not by going in. War is an old answer to a new question. It's true that fanatical religious fundamentalism must be stopped, but it is not it cannot be the task of the U.S. military and the Green Berets. Ask the Vietnamese. Hell, ask the Russians. If we in the United States insist on becoming the avengers who punish the perpetrators, we make suicide bombers of ourselves and our children. This is one world. Sept. 11 was a self-inflicted wound. Do we mutilate ourselves again, and again, or take on the work of healing?
