    Terry Bisson and The Story of Mumia Abu-Jamal in New York
    It was standing room only Friday night to hear Terry Bisson read from his new book on a move - The Story of Mumia Abu-Jamal Bisson was at Revolution Books in New York, February 23, to read from and sign copies of his new book. Also appearing that evening, Len Weinglass (Mumia's lead attorney) spoke about the current state of Mumia's legal case, and Carl Dix (Revolutionary Communist Party) talked about the popular political action that is still required to Free Mumia! Highlighting passages from the book, Bisson recounted Mumia's work with the Black Panther Party in the face of armed threats and daily harassment by the FBI and other police. He read of Mumia's in-your-face journalism, giving "voice to the voiceless" in Philadelphia during the later 1970s and early 1980s. And he underscored Mumia's request of him in writing this biography to portray Mumia's life as "representative of the lives of many of the youth of his generation, and particularly black youth, who were informed and set into motion by the welcome upheavals of history." He ended with this citation: " 'You know what I mean,' Mumia said, 'Don't make me out to be some saint or martyr. Being a revolutionary is hard, but it's fun. I was having fun. Hell, can you believe it, I'm still having fun!'

    "macs" by Terry Bisson - a debate on aesthetics
    This is a partial transcript of a discussion see also second part ) on rec.arts.sf.written in August 2000, which began after I had read the short story "macs" by Terry Bisson (which won the Locus magazine award for Best Short Story and was nominated for the Hugo; it was originally pubished in Fantasy and Science Fiction in November 1999 and is available on-line at Bisson's own web-site ) and posted the following reaction to the newsgroup: macs But obviously people disagree, since it has been nominated for various prizes. Does this show a fundamental gulf in tastes across the Atlantic? This drew a number of reactions mainly to the effect that if I considered the story to be pro- capital punishment, or that the author was actually in favour of the actions proposed, I was mistaken. This post from Kylinn is fairly typical: The issue of capital punishment is actually a very hot topic in the U.S., which is one of the reasons why " macs " is such a bitingly effective satire. It's a horrifying portrayal of dystopian possibilities. Try re-reading it with a "the author doesn't really think this is a good idea" filter on. Like the way one might read Swift's "

    meat the press! by Terry Bisson Welcome, sir, to Meat the Press. I hope you are prepared, as the Administration's chief spokesperson, to answer some tough questions. You bet. The President is dealing with tough times, which call for tough policies. If that means tough questions, I'm ready to endure a little "stress and duress" from the press, ha ha. That's what democracy's all about, isn't it? But isn't one word on your logo misspelled? And where are the other reporters? Aren't Newsweek and the NY Times supposed to be here? We decided it was time for restraint, as the President himself has said. We formed a pool, so the wrong questions wouldn't be asked. We realize that the War on Terrorism requires a heightened sensitivity to security. Admirable. I appreciate no let me say, since I can speak for him, that the President appreciates your spirit of restraint and responsibility. It's an example to us all. But the show would look better with the usual format, don't you think? I know I can count on you to ask the proper questions. And you can count on me not to answer any that might impinge on or impede our national security efforts. You never know. We have some new interview techniques, and you might find yourself answering questions you didn't intend to. And the pool format gives us a certain institutional deniability, which keeps our options open.

    ==a critical list with discussions==
    This is a brief discussion of Terry Bisson and, of course, of some books by Terry Bisson.
    This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Bisson; it includes those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn't think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark ( ) before the title so you know what's what.)
    I don't pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Bisson tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Bisson worthy; in sum, to help you rank Bisson (and the works by Bisson listed here) on your personal literary "to do" list.

    Jim Freund: Welcome to OmniVisions. Terry Bisson is author of about five original novels, a great many brilliant short stories, a scattering of plays, and a few movie novelizations. Most recently he completed the last 75 pages of Walter Miller's St. Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman , a sequel to the classic, A Canticle for Liebowitz Let's start right in: How did your "collaboration" with Walter Miller come about? Terry Bisson: I was recommended for the job by Alice Turner, the fiction editor of Playboy. JF: Can you give us a bit of the background of what you had to do was Miller still alive, how much research did you have to do, did you know where he was going with the final pages, etc.? TB: When I got the book Miller had written 600 pages and outlined the ending. he just didn’t want to actually write it. Then to my surprise Miller killed himself. I had never met him and was very upset. but I knew what to do with the book. I went to work after rereading Canticle several times.

    Talking Man
    Science Fiction Alien Contact Buch-Tips Der Zauberer Talking Man lebt mit seiner Tochter Crystal friedlich auf einem Schrottplatz an der Grenze zwischen Kentucky und Tennessee, wo er mit viel Geschick - und dann und wann auch ein bißchen Magie - Autos repariert. Doch die Idylle wird gestört, als eine böse Rivalin Talking Mans auftaucht und dieser daraufhin auf rätselhafte Weise verschwindet. Zusammen mit ihrem Freund Williams macht sich Crystal auf die Suche nach Talking Man, die sie quer durch Amerika und Kanada bis zum Nordpol führt. Dort kommt es zum Showdown zwischen den Mächten des Guten und der zerstörerischen Kraft des Bösen ... Letzteres mag ein wenig klischeehaft klingen, doch Talking Man Talking Man ein überaus sympathisches Buch ist, das ohne Klischees auskommt und ähnlich wie ein Road Movie funktioniert, vergibt Bisson auch einige Chancen: Es werden zwar hin und wieder »typische« amerikanische Gestalten und Unsitten karikiert, doch geschieht dies nur halbherzig und quasi nebenbei. So kommt es dem Leser schließlich vor, als habe sich Bisson beim Verfassen des Buches nicht recht entscheiden können, was er denn nun eigentlich wollte: eine unterhaltsame und zauberhafte Fantasy-Geschichte oder einen ambitionierten, vielleicht sogar satirischen Gegenwartsroman. Somit ist Talking Man insgesamt ein durchaus vergnügliches Leseabenteuer, das jedoch mehr als das sein könnte - und nach der hervorragenden Story-Sammlung

    Die Bären entdecken das Feuer
    Science Fiction Alien Contact Buch-Tips Leider ist der Name Bisson in Deutschland nahezu unbekannt, allerdings zu Unrecht. Der Grund dafür ist sicherlich, daß der Autor vor allem Kurzgeschichten publiziert hat und die kurze Form in Deutschland immer mehr an Beachtung verliert. Bisson hat in Amerika in nahezu allen wichtigen Genremagazinen veröffentlicht, darüber hinaus aber auch in O MNI oder P LAYBOY , was nur wenigen Science-Fiction -Autoren vergönnt ist. Seine Kurzgeschichten und Novellen haben ihm rund ein Dutzend Nominierungen für den Hugo , Nebula und Locus Award eingebracht, für die Titelgeschichte des Bandes erhielt er sowohl den Hugo als auch den Nebula. Bissons Texte haben stets die Länge, die dem Umfang der Idee angemessen ist. Er wird daher nie langweilig oder belanglos. Mit diesem Buch hat er eine der hochkarätigsten Storycollections der letzten Jahre vorgelegt. Hardy Kettlitz ALIEN CONTACT

    Posted 22 Jun 2002 by deirdre
    While Terry will be in town until tomorrow, our formal week with him is up, so folks can post notes about the wrap-up. For me, I learned a lot in this week, including one of the things I'd had trouble with (in stories that worked less well than those I've submitted thus far). Plot comes, in part, from digging deeper into the characters and their motivations. If your characters seem cardboard, the plot seems cardboard, or your characters do things that others don't understand (but you do), dig deeper. I really really enjoyed his reading at Archives (more about that in my blog . Several members of Clarion 97 were there and several Clarion Envious were also in attendance. Moe got lots of attention. Trent also had a lot of comments about what we'd learned from Terry during the week. Bisson beats the plot drum , posted 22 Jun 2002 by trentmw Kipling , posted 23 Jun 2002 by deirdre From "In the Neolithic Age": "There are nine and sixty ways of constructing tribal lays,
    And every single one of them is right!"
