Excerpt from arthur black's keynote speech at the National Forest Millennial Conference.
    http://www.savesaltspring.com/ablack.html
    The Barnacle, June 20, 2000
    by Arthur Black
An excerpt from a keynote speech delivered by Arthur Black to 550 foresters, government leaders and environmental representatives at the National Forest Millennial Conference in Thunder Bay, Ontario, earlier this month:
This was a personally poignant moment for me, because as I was talking on the phone to the conference chairman, I was looking out my window at a logging truck waddling down the road lugging a load of forty-foot fir logs. They are logging Salt Spring Island—quite literally, as I speak. And they’re logging it big time. "They" being a consortium known as Texada Land Corporation. Texada picked up 2,000 hectares of Salt Spring land—that’s about ten percent of the entire Island—and they’re currently logging about half an hectare a day. All of this does not sit well with perhaps 99 percent of the citizenry of Salt Spring, population 10,000, give or take. They mostly like their Island just the way it is.
What they see looks like a gigantic case of advanced ringworm.

    Another Lost Whole Moose Catalogue
Moose catalogue is about being Canadian
Moose book is a good read
by Arthur Black Here are two ways to tell that Christmas is coming. Number one: every shopping mall you pass is playing a tinny version of The Little Drummer Boy, by the Harry Semeon Chorale. Number two: every time you turn around you stumble across another brand new Canadian book, freshly published in the hope you'll buy it to stuff in somebody's stocking. Sure are a lot of them. Pierre Berton; of course. And Margaret Atwood. And Peter Newman, Kurt Browning and Darryl Sittler to boot. Heck, even I have a seasonal hardcover offering, currently teetering half way between The New York Times bestseller list and the Coles remainders table. But the Canadian book that's captured my heart this year isn't an Ottawa expose or a Maritimes novel or the memoirs of some Bay Street robber baron. lt's a catalogue. In fact, it's official title is Another Lost Whole Moose Catalogue. The ALWM catalogue is difficult to describe. Physically, it's 156 pages of print and photographs sandwiched between covers that measure l0 inches wide and 15 inches deep which is to say, large and ungainly. Kind of like a moose.

    http://radio.cbc.ca/programs/basic_black/art_bio.html
Arthur Black was born in Toronto on August 30, 1943. After stumbling through a succession of unsuccessful careers (dog walker, underwear salesman, cattle prodder at Ontario Public Stock Yards, etc.), Black began his broadcasting career as a Livestock Reporter with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Toronto.
In no time at all, he was reading traffic reports for a radio station in Thunder Bay and writing a weakly (sorry, weekly) newspaper column for a newspaper called Lakehead Living.
Black gamely reasoned that things couldn't get much worse.
That's when he came down with acute appendicitis.
"This has got to be Ground Zero" he reasoned.
    Black developed peritonitis.
    Black stopped reasoning.
Actually things did get better after that. Fifty-odd other newspapers picked up his newspaper column. The CBC liked his traffic reports so much they offered him a job hosting 'Basic Black', a weekly national radio show Black's been piloting since 1983.
In the summer of 1995, Arthur Black moved from Toronto to

oodiscs #28 EDIBLE BLACK INK: ARTHUR JARVINEN
The Crazy Sound World of Arthur Jarvinen oodiscs #28, Edible Black Ink , by Arthur Jarvinen (b. 1956), is the debut CD by the West Coast's most notable Totalist composer. Ranging from the relentless rhythmic drive of Part III of The Queen of Spain to the subtle manipulation of pencil sharpener and window shutters, Jarvinen's sound world is original, accessible and highly sophisticated. In a general 'dumbing down' of music and culture, Art maintains a rigorous sense of complexity and swing at the same time. The music is performed by the highly esteemed California EAR Unit joined by the wailing sound of Vinnie Golia's Indian nagaswaram (conical oboe). Kyle Gann, new music critic for the VILLAGE VOICE, has written, "The style of the new generation is sometimes called Totalism , connoting a music that has its cake and eats it too, they can appeal to both chamber-music mavens and rock fans. New York has sprouted a dozen or so totalists, but the equally brash, if more laid-back, Los Angeles scene has produced only one highly visible example so far: Arthur Jarvinen." Jarvinen's own experience in rock, jazz and blues bands accounts not only for the rhythmic vitality characteristic of his works but for many of his orchestational preferences as well.

The black fingers by Jean-Michel MAULPOIX
    Rimbaud seen by Pierre Michon
Rimbaud, the son , Gallimard, 1991 Translated from the original French by Catherine Wieder Pierre Michon tells the story of the boy with the black fingers, with laundry-women reddened hands : And it's already with the choice of these very colours the profile of a strange boy being delineated and escaping at the same time. Michon doesn't indeed really tell such a story, he observes it surge and surrounds it. What have we still to learn today about the boy from Ardennes, but that very way he had come, never waited, demanded immediately from poetry, and left ? At what cost do words deserve to rime together ? Is the game of language still worth the candle ? Can living be something else than a mistake ? Michon tells Rimbaud-the-derangement ; he doesn't add a few chapters to the traditional Vulgate. He comments it a little, and writes his own Gospel. Henceforth, he edges his way into the wrath of the difficult rascal, watches both Charleville and Paris with his own eyes and understands why it could not work long enough : it was a matter of verse one was expecting lights from that which would not be. It had been meant to fall short, useless and unbearable as it was.

Chapter One. Shows that a Good Beginning may Sometimes be Followed by a Bad Ending. "Six feet water in the hold, sir!" That would not have been a pleasant announcement to the captain of the 'Aurora' at any time, but its unpleasantness was vastly increased by the fact that it greeted him near the termination of what had been, up to that point of time, an exceedingly prosperous voyage. "Are you sure, Davis?" asked the captain; "try again." He gave the order under the influence of that feeling which is styled "hoping against hope," and himself accompanied the ship's carpenter to see it obeyed. "Six feet two inches," was the result of this investigation.

    Black Heart And White Heart
    by H. Rider Haggard
Dedication To the Memory of the Child Nada Burnham, who "bound all to her" and, while her father cut his way through the hordes of the Ingobo Regiment, perished of the hardships of war at Buluwayo on 19th May, 1896, I dedicate these tales and more particularly the last, that of a Faith which triumphed over savagery and death. H. Rider Haggard. Ditchingham.
Author's Note Of the three stories that comprise this volume[*], one, "The Wizard," a tale of victorious faith, first appeared some years ago as a Christmas Annual. Another, "Elissa," is an attempt, difficult enough owing to the scantiness of the material left to us by time, to recreate the life of the ancient Phoenician Zimbabwe, whose ruins still stand in Rhodesia, and, with the addition of the necessary love story, to suggest circumstances such as might have brought about or accompanied its fall at the hands of the surrounding savage tribes. The third, "Black Heart and White Heart," is a story of the courtship, trials and final union of a pair of Zulu lovers in the time of King Cetywayo.
