Blanchot, Maurice
The fiction and philosophical-literary essays of Maurice Blanchot (b. 1907) form one of the most elusive oeuvres in modern French letters. A principled recluse, Blanchot has avoided interviews, photographs, and academic affiliations; public knowledge of his life consists of a handful of minor anecdotes and of inferences built around the appearance of his books and essays. In the mid-1930s Blanchot contributed articles to right-wing journals, most notably to the Maurassian periodical Combat. During the German occupation his political views changed radically, and since the end of the war he has been a disembodied but unambiguous presence on the left, a co-signer (and rumor has it, the author) of the "Declaration of the 121" (1960), a call to resist French intervention in Algeria. Blanchot's political turn coincided with the inauguration of a literary project that was to help shape French literary modernity. His novels and Thomas l'obscur, Aminadab, 1948) arguably number among the most significant contributions to twentieth-century French literature. Meanwhile, his review of Jean Paulhan's Les Fleurs de Tarbes
