James P. Blaylock, Thirteen Phantasms (Edgewood Press, 2000; Ace 2003) In this workaday world, we often file everyday events into a folder labeled "minutiae," stick it in the back of our mind's drawer, and close the cabinet without having read the fine print. Or, for that matter, without even glancing at the larger picture. Each day becomes a carbon copy of the last, shuffling itself off into the endless paperwork of our mind, which quickly becomes overwhelmed with all the sameness: Get up, feed the cats/dogs/fish/spouse/kids, do chores, go to work, go home, eat, watch TV, feed the cats/dogs/fish/spouse/kids, go to bed. If we want to recall a particular event from a particular day, our mind ends up comparing details until something stands out, viewing the pictures like one of those comic strips that asks you to "find 10 differences in these frames." We leave little or no room for the fantastic, closing ourselves off from the wonders that the seemingly mundane may hold. Don't believe me? When was the last time you wondered at the size of a garden-grown tomato? Marveled over the metamorphosis of a moth? Gone in an old curiosity shop or aquarium supply store just to see what it had to sell? Happily, James Blaylock hasn't let the world speed by. He looks at every detail, every nuance, and finds the marvelous in the mundane, the extra in the ordinary.

James P. Blaylock, The Rainy Season (Ace, 2000) The Rainy Season is a tale of murder and intrigue, child sacrifice and time travel, a very odd, thought-provoking combination. Right from the first page I was totally captivated by Blaylock's evocative prose. Throughout my reading I found myself fully drawn into the story and living the experiences of the protagonists. The Rainy Season is one of those novels that I refer to as a 'movie story' I can visualise in my mind the whole story as I read. Essentially The Rainy Season is the story of Phil Ainsworth, a widower who lives alone in the house once owned by his mother. He is a photographer hiding from the world after the loss of his wife. He is thrown back into life through the death of his sister and the arrival of Betsy, his ten-year-old niece to whom he is now guardian. And so begins the strange turn of events. First, Marianne's will and Phil's guardianship are contested by Mrs. Darwin, who had been caring for Betsy and believed that she had been more of a mother than Betsy's own mother and thus she should be allowed to care for and adopt Betsy. It is only later on that we are shown the true Mrs. Darwin. Betsy owns a piece of very worn glass shaped like an inkwell that had once belonged to her mother and her mother before that. It contains a memory of a woman giving birth and for some reason everyone seems to be searching for the inkwell. Before long Phil finds himself having to protect Betsy not only from Mrs. Darwin but also from Mr. Appleton, who has very sinister motives for obtaining the inkwell and Betsy, and from his assistant Elizabeth Kelly, who wants the inkwell because she believes it is of monetary value.

With the recent release of his latest novel " All the Bells on Earth ", James P. Blaylock has proved himself to be among the front-running authors working in speculative fiction. The interest in his work has prompted the re-release of some of his earlier works, and some new works, in deluxe, illustrated editions. For the Blaylock reader, these three books are extremely well-produced, beautifully illustrated and well worth the various premium prices you're likely to have to pay after you've managed to hunt them down. Yes, the packages are wonderful; but it's the content that matters, and the content in these books most certainly lives up to the deluxe packaging. In "Doughnuts", Blaylock offers us another glimpse at Walt, the main character of "All the Bells on Earth", and into the heart of obsession, compulsion and release. It's a small story, barely filling up the 58 pages, even when padded with an introduction by Lewis Shiner, an appreciation by Lucius Shepard and an afterword by Tim Powers. But it's a great Blaylock story, filled with the same tiny observations and bits of humor that make his other work so unique. In this story he eschews the supernatural and weird in favor of the mundane and commonplace, with excellent results. The other contributor's offer insights into this and other work, while the illustrations, which are simply pasted-in photos by the author's wife, are perfectly evocative of the kind of shenanigans in which Blaylock specializes. Phil Park's cover is literally the icing on the cake, in this case, a cake doughnut.

Winter Tides ... All the Bells on Earth
A review by Rodger Turner
Advertisement document.write(''); Betsy is 9 years old. She's a big fan of Winnie the Pooh. In her backpack, she carries Pooh stuffed animals wherever she goes. And Betsy is adrift in a pool of strangers. Strangers who think they know what's best for her. Marianne, her mom, has died in Austin, Texas, from a lethal mixture of anti-depressants which may not have been self-administered. Betsy is numb. Phil Ainsworth, her uncle and Marianne's twin brother, has been appointed guardian according to her second will. Betsy kinda likes him, in an offbeat way. In her mom's first will, she was to be taken care of by Hannah Darwin, the quintessential neighbour lady who babysat, fed and cared for her during the latter stages of her mother's life. Betsy thinks she is sneaky. But Betsy will have to move to Phil's rural home in southern California. There, he lives on an old farm and works as a nature photographer. Phil is being badgered by Elizabeth Kelly, an antique picker, who is hoping for the big score. It'll come, if she can find a piece of "memory glass." She thinks Betsy is the key. But Betsy doesn't trust her.

A review by Rodger Turner
Advertisement document.write(''); First things first. James Blaylock is one of my two favourite writers. If publishers do for him what they have done for J. R. R. Tolkien, I'll buy it, I'll read it and I'll probably swoon with enjoyment. Maybe I wouldn't swoon over his character lists or idea tags or his maps. Probably I'll just smirk or giggle. But I'll swoon over his use of words, his mix of character mannerisms and maybe even his Ashbless poetry (my friend Charles would blanch at that admission). Fifteen years earlier, a surfer by the name of Dave Quinn was about to leave the beach after a day on his board. He noticed two girls, twins he thought, playing in the surf. He knew the tides were up and it wouldn't take much for them to be drawn into the undertow. The further they moved away from their mother, the more anxious Dave became. He took off after them when both girls were swept away. One, Anne, he was able to toss back onto the beach but the other, Elinor, was being pulled out to sea. He managed to grab her but they were both pulled out beyond the breakers. Losing body heat and wearying from trying to keep the girl afloat, Dave's brain flashes on a scene where she disappears from his arms just as a wave drags her away. Distraught, he leaves the beach without meeting the family.

Jim Freund: Welcome to OmniVisions. Tonight our guest is fantasy/sf writer James P. Blaylock, whose latest novel, Winter Tides will be out shortly. As we begin, Jim Blaylock had a story for us that was erased from here in an alternate universe. Jim, would you care to repeat that? Jim Blaylock: No. what? JF: I think it involved abalone...? Ellen Datlow: Your joke, Jim (B). Repeat your joke. It was funny. JB: Okay. It seems as if there was this guy, see, who crossed a crocodile and an abalone, and what he got was an abadile and a crock of baloney. JF: Ouch! Well, let that be a lesson. Welcome, Jim! (and Ellen, of course) JB: I'm happy to be here. Am I being paid for this travesty? JF: Consider it an in-kind donation. Why not start by telling us a bit about Winter Tides ... What genre (if any) would you place it in? JB: Winter Tides , I guess, is in the fantasy horror genre. It's a ghost story of sorts, set in Huntington Beach, a local beach city. There's even a severed head in the book. JF: Severed heads seem to be in these days. I was thinking of it as an intrigue novel with supernatural overtones. I finished it on my way home tonight, and really enjoyed the feeling at the end. Whether it's supernatural/horror may be subjective, I thought.
