Allan Bloom and America
A Review of The Closing of the American Mind , by Allan Bloom.
By Thomas G. West Posted June 1, 2000 This review appeared in the Spring, 1988 issue of the Claremont Review of Books , and was reprinted in Essays on The Closing of the American Mind . This version appeared in the Summer 2000 issue of Texas Education Review Allan Bloom's Closing of the American Mind was published in 1987, and it has been bought, if not exactly read, by millions of Americans since then. In many ways this was a very useful book. It brought into public view the scandal of the universities, which openly teach that there is no principled difference between good and evil. Bloom exposes and denounces the pervasive and mindless relativism has exhausted the spirit of the West so badly over the past century.

53. Allan Bloom Synopsis
©2001 NewFoundations The Educational Theory of allan bloom AnalystMichael Leichliter. RETURN. edited 12/14/01 I. Theory of Value
http://www.newfoundations.com/GALLERY/Bloom.html
The Educational Theory of Allan Bloom Analyst: Michael Leichliter RETURN edited 12/14/01 I. Theory of Value What knowledge and skills are worthwhile learning? What are the goals of education? Democratic education, whether it admits it or not, wants and needs to produce men and women who have the tastes, knowledge, and character supportive of a democratic regime. (p. 26)
From the earliest beginnings of liberal thought there was a tendency in the direction of indiscriminate freedom. Hobbes and Locke, and the American Founders following them, intended to palliate extreme beliefs, particularly religious beliefs, which lead to civil strife. The members of sects had to obey the laws and be loyal to the Constitution; if they do so, other had to leave them alone, however distasteful their beliefs might be. In order to make this arrangement work, there was a conscious, if covert, effort to weaken religious beliefs, partly by assigning - as a result of a great epistemological effort - religion to the realm of opinion as opposed to knowledge. But the right to freedom of religion belonged to the realm of knowledge. . . . All to the contrary, the sphere of rights was to be the arena of moral passion in a democracy.
Openness used to be the virtue that permitted us to seek the good by using reason. It now means accepting everything and denying reason's power. The unrestrained and thoughtless pursuit of openness, without recognizing the inherent political, social, or cultural problem of openness as the goal of nature, has rendered openness meaningless. Cultural relativism destroys both one's own and the good. (p. 38)

The Closing of the American Mind (Introduction)
This is a review of the introduction to The Closing of the American Mind by Allan Bloom. Almost every page of the book, when stripped off of the extravagant words, presents a lucid idea that excites me for its outrageousness, clarity, and truth ! It's so easy to simply slip off on a tangent from each page, but I'll try to refrain from doing that. The book describes "how higher education has failed democracy and impoverished the souls of today's students." Even using abstract terms such as "soul", Bloom gets the essence of his message across pretty vividly. The introduction is about Our Virtue, that of openness. However, Bloom brings to bear two sorts of openness. One that should be in order for us to be able to philosophise and animates anyone who wishes to learn. The other is responsible for the closing; the openness of indifference. Cultural relativism is the latter sort of openness. Primary education has dedicated itself to showing that this relativism is necessary for openness. However, "the point is not correct the mistakes and really be right; rather it is not to think you are right all." Bloom points out that only in Western Society is there some willingness to doubt the identification of the good with one's ownq way. Most non-Western cultures believe their own culture to be superior to others, and this is natural, and exactly the opposite of western thought. "But by requiring students to study these cultures, what we are really doing is applying a Western Prejudice-which we covertly take to indicate the superiority of our culture-and deforming the evidence of those other cultures to attest to its validity."

Allan Bloom and America The Closing of the American Mind
Allan Bloom
New York: Simon and Schuster, 1987
Reviewed by Thomas G. West The Closing of the American Mind is a diagnosis of the intellectual ills of our day, and, if it is not a prescription, it contains at least some suggestions for a cure. The book is most sound, I will argue, in its description of current pathologies. It is partly sound, partly unsound in its account of their origin. It is least sound in its prescription for their healing. Bloom begins by examining the students in our prestige universities, and he finds them deficient in moral formation, in reading of serious books, in musical tastes, and above all in eros. They have no love in their souls, no longing for anything high or great. Their minds are empty, their characters weak, and their bodies sated with rock and roll and easy sex. These students come equipped with a simple-minded relativism that is quick to close off all discussion with the tag, "Who’s to say what’s right and wrong?" Their relativism justifies an easygoing openness to everything, an openness which expresses their incapacity for being serious about anything. Their proclaimed openness, in fact, turns out to be a dogmatic closedness toward moral virtue no less than toward real thoughtfulness. They are "spiritually detumescent."
