Jo Ellen was born in Houston, Texas, USA on October 20th, 1945. She now lives in Guelph, Ontario. She wrote the following books:
Dylan's Lullaby (1988)
Malcom's Run Away Soup (1988)
10 For Dinner (1989)
Sara Saw a Blue Moscow (1991)
Mama's bed (1993)

Jo Ellen earned a degree in elementary education and psychology. She met her husband, a zoologist, in 1975. They moved to Guelph, Ontario. Jo Ellen spends her free time reading, writing, playing on her computer, and loves to look after her pets. She has many animals. She has an Australlia shepherd, an Argentine desert tortoise, a guinea pig and a water turtle. She also loves gardening and most important her family. She likes to read her books to kids at any elementary schools and libaries. The book Jeremiah Learns to Read is about a boy named Jeremiah that learns to read his first book. I found that her style of writing is very intressting and always has a catchy title. Jo Ellen is always very busy with her animals whom she loves very much. Written by Ian Drake, December 17, 1999.

Hdbk. $19.99 Rating: E Jo Ellen Bogart's book, Capturing Joy: The Story of Maud Lewis, is truly a tribute, not only to this much-admired Nova Scotia folk artist, but to the respect which she has drawn from other artists. When I heard Halifax author Lance Woolaver talk about his book, World Without Shadows (1996), what struck me was the gentle respect which he so obviously felt for Maud, and this same respect comes through in Bogart's work. The simple narrative begins in the middle of Maud's life, with her marriage to Everett Lewis. It then moves back to her childhood and adolescent days, and each part of her life is presented as an opportunity to see her life reflected in her art (which is beautifully reproduced on full pages opposite the text). The difficulties which Maud encountered - her miserly husband, the death of her parents at a young age, and her birth defects and crippling arthritis - are deftly interwoven with all that Maud found beautiful. Mark Lang's soft black and white illustrations add depth to Maud's story, lovingly depicting the people and things dear to her heart. The result is a tale that works at every level. It was difficult to assign grade levels to this book, because it will appeal to everyone for so many reasons. It is enjoyable as a simple picture book to be read to primary grades or as a discussion on art for high school students. It is also a lesson for elementary grades on overcoming obstacles and bringing happiness into the world. The afterword provides details on Maud's life and on her small home which can be viewed at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

Jeremiah Learns to Read is a beautiful book, not only aesthetically but in content. Jo Ellen Bogart, a best selling author, has written a heartwarming story for young children about Jeremiah, a man in his twilight years, who decides he must learn to read. Jeremiah is shown eventually writing stories, going to the library, and reading poems to his wife. His wife is now inspired to learn to read. Best of 1994 The Pick of the Fall Season in Canada
by Virginia Davis
Volume 22 Number 6
1994 November/December
Picture-books, short stories, fantasy, non-fiction, and more recommended by Virginia Davis, this year's Claude Aubry award winner The Fall 1994 publishing season contains exceptional new picturebooks, admirable fiction for pre-teen and teen readers, and nonfiction exploring challenging questions in the political, social and scientific arenas. The short story finds favoured place again, and a cluster of important books are now available in paperback. Picture books Aska's Sea Creatures, a brilliant companion to Aska's Birds and Aska's Animals . Barbara Reid's Plasticine art gives added verve to Jo Ellen Bogart's lively poem in Gifts A direct contrast in tone is Celia Barker Lottridge's Something Might Be Hiding , illustrated by Paul Zwolak. A young girl's unease in the strangeness of a new home spurs her to believe "something might be hiding." She and her family find nothinguntil she herself follows a mysterious humming to its source. The ending that hints of an uncertainif not, perhaps, dangerous future is similar to Ian Wallace's visual warning at the end of his retelling of "Hansel and Gretel" that evil never completely dies. Wallace has moved the setting for Hansel and Gretel , one of the best-known German tales, to an Atlantic seacoast village and the time to just-about-now. He created the darkness he desired for a dark tale by drawing in pastel pencil on black Lana Balkis paper. The result is an unremitting sense of night. The witch's famous gingerbread house receives one of its most interesting interpretations ever in this memorable edition.

Children's Book Reviews A Hat For Minerva Louise
Written and Illustrated by Janet Morgan Stoeke
Dutton 1994 Minerva Louise is back! That ever-curious hen is determined not to spend the winter in the chicken coop but she finds feathers just aren't enough to keep out the cold. In her search for suitable clothing, she rejects a garden hose as a scarf (too long), gloves as winter boots (too big) and a flower pot as a hat (too heavy). At last, she finds the perfect winter attire a pair of mittens that she uses as a hat for her head and a hat for her tail. Suitably bemittened and snugly smug, the fashionable fowl struts off into the snowscape. Stoeke's humorous snowflake-dotted illustrations are the perfect vehicle for this engaging winter's tale. With its bold colours, uncluttered layout and short, easy-to-read text, A Hat for Minerva Louise will be a popular selection for group as well as family storytimes. A worthy sequel to Minerva Louise (Dutton, 1986), this book is guaranteed to chase away the lost-mitten blues. Gifts
Written by Jo Ellen Bogart
Illustrated by Barbara Reid
North Winds Press 1994 "My grandma went to Africa, said: `What would you have me bring?' `Just a baobab seed that's all I need, and a roar from the jungle king.'" As grandma's wanderings take her around the world on foot, in a jeep and in a wheelchair grandma presents her growing granddaughter with everything from a "sunrise kissed by the morning mist" to "an iceberg on a string." But the best gift is yet to come. On the last page, two new travellers set off on their own quest: her grown-up granddaughter and brand new baby.
